My mom had me watch this with her because it was shot in the area she grew up, but I was surprised that the movie was actually good, with characters I liked and thought provoking situations.
My favorite character was Selena. Even though she has to deal with a lot in her life, she is the most mature character present. It was obvious even in the beginning that she was taking care of that whole family. Her only flaw seems to be that she is too much like a martyr. If you've seen the movie, you'll know what I mean.
I love Norman, even in the beginning when he was still kind of awkward. Then, when he came back on leave, he had his head high on his shoulders, and putting his arm over Allison, and well *swoon*
What got me is the way the adults treated Betty Anderson. Twice she was called a tramp by people (if this movie were made today the language would probably be more offensive), but if you look there's no indication that she was sleeping around. All she was is pretty and comfortable with her sexuality and she doesn't mind letting others know. She even said that Rodney was the only guy she had been interested in since she was a kid and I believe her.
The over arching theme of the film seems to be adults acting like jackasses and the teenagers trying to deal with that. It was a controversial movie at the time and a lot of people tried to get it banned. The movie was even toned down from the book, I understand, but for me, personally, it seemed like mad libs. The words rape and abortion were never used, even though its obvious that's what they were talking about.
The music is emotional, the setting is pretty (of course ), the casting seems spot on, except for maybe the guy playing Allison's mother's boyfriend. Neither of us could really get ourselves to care about him.
Also, it spawned a tv show that was apparently the first soap opera. Oh Peyton Place, what have you spawned?
