YODAGYATSO: You will know. When you are calm, at peace. Passive. A Jedi Monk uses the Forceairbending for knowledge and defense, never for attack.

How did you know that he fought back and even so, didn't use deadly force while under attack. It a question that has no right or wrong answer, because there noting to 100% agree to base.

To the Air Nomads, all life is sacred, so I'm guessing that Gyatso used his airbending only in defense, whether his defensive moves were lethal, that is a good question. Avatar Yang Chen said that sometimes you must sacrifice your own personal needs/beliefs to do what's best for the world. Destroying the air nation would throw the world out of balance, so I guess lethal force was understandable.

Obviously, a great monk like he was would have done anything to protect his people. I guess the Air Nomads only used violence in defence, remember from the finale when Yangchen said "Do whatever it takes to protect the world"?

He could have been defending innocent kids or stall for the others to get away.

Who was there to say that Gyatso killed them? There's a thousand and forty seven million and three different possibilities.
/excuse the random number >> I do that sometimes.

Or he just shielded himself with air causing the fire to burn everyone else in the room.
Overpowered firebenders do that, ya know.
