If Avatar's creators really do extend Avatar past three seasons, that means leaving the characters we know and love behind. However, that means there's a whole new sea of faces to recognize in the future.
If it were up to you, which characters would you like to see in the new story arc? Would you like to see maybe the daughters and sons of former main characters, or completely new people? What benders would be the main characters?
And the show's name probably would still remain the same: Avatar: The Last Airbender. So there'd be another Avatar to incorporate into the show, or a descendant of one... or...?

Hmm... I think when we get a new Avatar Series it might have a different name. Because if it turns out that Aang finds more Airbenders it'll turn into a spin-off with a new name.
I don't think the characters should have too much of a connection to our characters now. I would want a Waterbender, Earthbender, Airbender and Firebender!

How about a malevolent spirit that controls an Avatar?
And four Benders from each nation has to stop this "evil" Avatar?

I think what they might do, or what might just be interesting, is change only the subtitle, so instead of Avatar: the Last Airbender, under the new story arc the show is called "Avatar: The something-something" (I just wondered why they added "the last airbender" to the title in the first place and that might be an explanation). And it follows the adventures of another avatar and his/her journey to master the elements, which could be very different given the circumstances of the world at the time. I've always wondered what avatars do when there hasn't been a war going on for a hundred years...I think people would make the transition easiest if they did the story of Roku or the WT Avatar after Aang, but they could go hundreds of years into the past or future.
On the other hand, completely taking the avatar out of the equation and using characters who don't even know him/her would be very interesting too.

Maybe the ancestors of our main cast now. Maybe 100 or so years in the future. Then they could make discreet references to the gAang and stuff. Or maybe characters from the past when there where still airbenders, like from Yangchen or Kurik's time.

I was thinking that the new story arc might be the time preceding the war and the course of the war. "Avatar: Sozin's War."

I think I'd like all traces of the characters we know from this arc to disappear, except for Aang (we would see him guide the new Avatar as Roku did for him) and Zuko (he would undoubtedly be mentioned, having been a Fire Lord - his son or grandson would be on the throne). None of Aang and Katara's kids or grandkids, please. I think that I'd like the new Avatar to be a waterbender from the Northern tribe, who learns that he is the Avatar when he's sixteen (the traditional age), and is somehow not surprised at this revelation. His personality would be a lot different from Aang's, I imagine: dedicated and responsible, he would embrace his destiny as the Avatar. The plot wouldn't be similar to this arc's at all - instead of a war going on in the real world, there would be a war going on in the Spirit World. The Avatar would quickly discover this conflict by meditating at the Spirit Oasis (probably at episode three, I'd say, after the characters are properly introduced) - Aang would appear to him once he had crossed over and guide him through what was happening, but the new Avatar would be flung uncerimoniously from the Spirit World, and wouldn't know why. He would have visions of a spirit whose form he can never quite make out attacking other spirits, but he would not be able to re-enter the Spirit World, try as he might. After consulting his tribe's chief, who would be the token wise old man (the new Iroh, if you will), the new Avatar would leave on a ship with some crewmates (one of them would eventually become one of his travelling companions - he would be a lot more light-hearted than the Avatar, always making jokes about spirit powers and stuff - which would make the Avatar really mad) for the Southern Air Temple, to try and contact Aang at the place of his birth on the Winter Solstice. He would succeed, and actually enter the Spirit World in physical form instead of just speaking with Aang. This demon spirit would finally be shown clearly to the new Avatar, and he would attempt to stop it, only to realize that there's no bending in the spirit world. Aang would take him to safety, however, and explain to him that the monster is tearing the fabric of the spirit world apart and trying to gain access into the real world. As the seasons go on, the new Avatar will learn earthbending from a timid man who would teach him a valuable lesson about overcoming your fears in order to understand your element. He would learn firebending from one of the new Fire Sages, who are back to supporting the Avatar now that Zuko's son/grandson is on the throne, and really struggle with it. And he would learn airbending from a generic, easy-going monk at one of the four air temples (maybe Aang's son, maybe not - the show won't divulge that secret). All the while the demon would be getting stronger, actually breaking out of the spirit world at several points throughout the series. These would be isolated events, however, and it would be stopped each time. There would be sideplots (minor villains on the human plane - some who are just jerks who treat people badly and have no ties to the over-arching Spirit World conflict, and perhaps one major one who has discovered the demon spirit's power and hopes to control it for himself and destroy the earth or whatever). Probably a romantic interest (the third member of their party... not a bender at all - an Earth Kingdom girl, I think, very beautiful, who would be smitten with him, but he would refuse to give her the time of day until the third and final season). Eventually, the new Avatar would master all four elements and unlock his potential. He would come home to the Spirit Oasis, the site of his first trip to the Spirit World, and cross over once more. At this point in the story it would be revealed that an Avatar who has realized his powers is in fact able to bend in the Spirit World, which he would have learned upon his enlightenment as the Avatar. There would be a huge battle between this demon (who the audience learns a lot about over the course of the show's three seasons - the spirit isn't mindless, but it's out for revenge, because some terrible crime was committed against it - not quite sure what, though) and the Avatar, and the Avatar would win. He would also, however, in the final episode, right the wrong that was committed against the spirit on earth, in an effort to maintain balance. ... " I didn't mean to write so much. Guess I got a little carried away. ;/

Actually I won't mind supplementals like The 600 day siege depicting Lu Ten and his crew and how he dies. Maybe a few glimpses of Long Feng handling the news of the siege so it won't reach little Kuei.

Man, there are so many good writers on this board. I should know better than to read fic at this hour, though ~ gives me the weirdest dreams. >.< I don't know if I'd rather see another season arc in the future, or in the past. I'm thinking past, for the backstory, but either would be cool ~ as long as it was at least 2 or 3 generations, I'm thinking.

IMO with a new story arc they should introduce new characters...'cause most of the time new story arcs with the same characters gets a bit old(COUGH*dragonballgt*COUGH) and there isn't really much news to aang or zuko, we've had their whole history already...

Problem on one side is change is bad and we have example of that on past anime but the other side is if it continues like this...you basically have to start all over and how many are welling to go over a uncharted new process and look at the arguments that have been going on about the past five episode and imagine if this wasn’t an arch....There too much emotion on right now to see even if there a next season but it answer the question, with every season or arc, there new characters to play a part and proof even with avatar and it seasons....question is well they have recurrence to stick around from a teo to a jet to a toph.

I'd definitey read it!

Thanks a lot, you all. Actually, I sort of convinced myself to write that story as I was making that post. I wouldn't want it to conflict with this first arc at all, though, so I wouldn't post anything until after this season's finale airs...

I want to see the kids of whichever couples make it through. Kataang(or Taang if I'm lucky) kids. a Maiko kid on the throne,or maybe a prince or princess while Zuko and Mai are on the throne
and if we don't see that at the very minimum I want to see Aang guiding the new avatar throughout his journey.
