My only problem with Katara's bending is how powerful she got in such a short amount of time. Everyone else (Toph, Azula) trained for most of their lives. Katara just taught herself in the South Pole.
I'm aware that she had "talent" but even then, her jump in skill by the end of season one was a bit jarring.

Why wouldn't she be? She's the Avatar's waterbending teacher.. anything less would be dissapointing.

^^That's exactly what I've been saying all along. Aang needed allies who were capable of defeating the Fire Nation's best, so it makes perfect sense from a story perspective for Katara to be a waterbending prodigy (just as Toph is an earthbending prodigy and Sokka is a naturally talented swordsman). Azula had teachers and advanced training all of her life; once Katara got some formal training, she hit her stride and showed how much talent she truly has!

You overrate Katara, SpiritBender. Katara and Aang learned Water bending together; it was not Katara teaching Aang everything he knows. Also, you should not discount what Master Pakku taught Aang. Katara is not like Toph, who taught Aang Earth Bending from the ground up. Katara had a lot of help teaching Aang--Scrolls and Pakku had a lot to do with Aang mastering water.

mhm. Katara is just determined. She belives she can accomplish tasks, and she does. I think she read the scrolls first then taught Aang later

Katara is not like Toph, who taught Aang Earth Bending from the ground up. Katara had a lot of help teaching Aang--Scrolls and Pakku had a lot to do with Aang mastering water. One of the big points that the writers have been making with this show is that determination and hard work can carry you much further than relying on raw talent alone. Katara worked much harder than Aang with Master Pakku, and advanced more quickly then Aang. Master Pakku called Katara a master; he did not do the same with Aang. Then Master Pakku had Katara take over Aang's training after they left the north pole, which says a heck of a lot. If they were even remotely close to each other ability, then they would be training partners -- not master and student. Besides, after seeing the waterbending feats Katara performed at the beginning of season 2 and the end of season 3, I know I'm overrating her one bit. She has every bit as much skill and raw power as Toph in her own element, and a dang shade more than Azula. Scrolls and techniques can only carry you so far. Katara has demonstrated that she truly understands water on a profound level, and it shows in the way she adapts and demonstrates new ways of bending water every time she fights! A "large library of moves" is nothing compared to someone who can innovate and invent techniques in the heat of combat. I'll say it again -- Aang needed allies who were capable of defeating the Fire Nation's best, and Katara definitely fits the bill (as does the rest of the Gaang). -- SpiritBender

I think she more of a fast learner and pick up new skills very well and fast...Something that most teachers want from the students.

I've always thought of Katara as a prodigy or at least very talented. The problem with her was that she had to figure out everything on her own until Master Pakku started training her.
Aang, Azula, and Toph had teachers. Also even though waterbending is different from airbending, Aang had knowledge in bending, so it would have been a bit easier to pick up than if he had no knowledge of any bending and tried to learn.

The creators don't even have to say it. The answer is yes. Look at how far she has come, on HER OWN.

I think Katara has a lot of raw power but lacked focus. But after meeting a great master like Pakku she was able to realize her potential very quickly.

Honestly I think she is powerful because as the Avatar's friend/love interest she must be.
You've seen that in shows like Inuyasha
A main female character/ love interest will gain important powers because if she didn't would we really care about her

Now this is the first Katara thread I could find, but I'll post this here. Last night, while playing an older game called Star Wars Galactic Battlegrounds. I noticed I was attacked by someone named Katarra. Then I realized that courtesy of Wookieepedia, it's a real Star Wars name. Click her name above.

All these talk about raw power vs. precision is moot point. A prodigy by definition is someone who learns a lot and achieves high level of skill in very short time. And Katara has done just that.
Make no mistake, Katara is a master waterbender by now. Two master waterbenders, Pakku and Hama, has confirmed that. And even if she's wasn't a master waterbender, she will be soon enough because she learns waterbending very quickly. And that's basically what a prodigy is, an extremely quick learner.
