This is a serious thread, not a bunch of stupid random stuff. I need serious, realistic suggestions.
My friends and I filmmed a movie a while ago that was adapted from an Avatar fanfiction. (Trust me, you can't tell except for the four elements) We had some basic, nonimpressive ways to fake bending but we ran out of time to film so only Earth made it.
We're now working on the sequel, set six months later. The characters powers should have developed more but I'm not sure how to show it. We have a few basic, nonpowerful moves and I'm trying to figure out how to do it better.
We have all four elements. There's a big fight invovling the waterbender and a demon in a lake. That's the one I'm the most worried about.
Any suggestions?

Well for waterbending you could have someone underwater and kind of behind a rock shooting a water gun or just splashing. I don't know if that'd work, but it's all I could think of. Good luck with the movie though!

I think you need those really good video editing programs.

CGI? I mean I've seen some fans do it, I'm not sure if its CGI, but they managed how to add a special effect layered in their video, for situation like this. Here's a parody that some kids made for Metal Gear Solid 2. They added like a layer of blood splatter and explosion. Maybe you can look into that. Or You can go old school: Fire: HairSpray + Lighter Water: Water Hose Air: Fan (or good ol' natural Wind) Earth: (Gravel + Sand, Boulder + Rock are too heavy) HairSpray is the magic stuff, but its bad for the environment, theirs chemcial in there that eats away the o-zone. But yeah, you can hairspray your hand and light it on fire, and be fine for 2-3 seconds. If you want to make a flame sword = wood + hairspray + fire, there you go!! If you want to create an effect of lighting stuff on fire a distance = hair spray + fire (be careful, don't do that to flammable stuff) If you want to create fire on the ground (write your name in flames) = hairspray + fire A fire ball uhhhh: www.youtube.com/watch?v=uzkNI4YIU2oDon't hurt yourself!!!

If you have the proper lighting and camera angle, you can hold up your hands and create the effect that you're holding fireballs. My friend took a picture of me doing it, but I don't have it. I'll upload as soon as I do.

Yeah, I would say that you should just use some special effects. - No one can get hurt, and nothing will get broken (by accident)
- They look really cool
- They should be easier to do than to make your own bending

Hehehe these sound like the best (and most fun!) suggestions to me. You could also make use of programs like photoshop if you have them and edit out elements you don't want to be shown. For example: Firebending Make a molotov cocktail and throw it against something in such a way that it looks like you are bending once it is ablaze, then go back and edit out the bottle. ....Err..then again, this might be a bit too dangerous if you aren't experienced...if you do try it just make sure you got extinguishers or something handy. ;; *scratches head* Anyway, something more simple...If you want for whatever reason to look like you are breathing fire (like Iroh) then take a normal lighter, suck in the gas for a few seconds (NOTE: Do NOT breath in the gas or swallow it!), more like holding it in your mouth. Then blow it out, as you blow it out light your lighter and POOF...fireball. Be sure to spit afterward, gets the taste out. Me and my friends have done these things without any problems...usually in a safe place...usually. Then again we were bored without much to do, and also years younger when we were relatively idiotic. Try them at your own risk.

Thanks guys. Sadly I can't afford a better editing program, the one I have was given to me by my teacher.
I'm not too worried about us getting hurt. My friends have done plenty stupider than this.

Here is a movie on how to make a fireball shooter. It looks pretty great. www.youtube.com/watch?v=3TvAjGOj-BEYou can also make fake rocks with paper, glue and a baloon. By attatching a fishing line to in and and a tree brench wich is out of sight you could make a movement to elevate the fake rock and then strike it into any direction. With a powerfull fan you could fake the movement of air. With some plants or other things that would show the direction of the air moving it would look a bit like airbending. I'm not sure about how you could make cool looking waterbending without using computer graphix.

I know that you can cover something in rubbing alcohol and set it on fire without burning the object. They sometimes do it in Japanese hibachi restaraunts. The alcohol burns away before the fire can burn you.

Well, I was going to suggest the digtal editing route, since my friend is a genius at that, but since you seem to be tapped out in that department...
Try having your waterbender make the motions while one or two others hide underwater and cause the water to react as it should.

Throw chalk dust for airbending. Then you could conceal a small fan in your sleeve. It won't be very impressive, but it will be visible.
