But neither of them compare to Iroh. good humored and illusioned to the evils of someone close to him he loved... he was like a combination of Zuko and aang... only when he lost his son, his throne, and was awakened to the evil of his brother. He didnt Emo about, or become singl-minded in an attempt to restore things to the way they were.
When all else failed, his quest was one of (gasp) self-betterment. imagine that.
I really wish we knew more about his story.
you bring uip some good points about why Iroh is awesome, and help me convince myself that he really is the 2nd best character--behind only Toph. I mean, a 12-year-old blind girl that beats anyone/everyone up? too awesome for words. that's a Chuck Norris if I've ever saw one... and of course Iroh. who could possibly forget the prison scenes... working out behind the backs of the guards, feigning insanity... and of course, his past. this guy's been there and done it all. I think that Chuck Norris should be Iroh in the upcoming avatar movie (lol jk)
so yeah. long story short: Toph is the best, and Iroh is the most obvious runner-up (tie maybe?) they both rule. Best Friends Forever.

Oh I love Toph, too. I would say she's almost a tie for my favorite, because even though she can't see and she's just a little 12-year-old, she completely dominates everyone. Her bending is amazing and I love her personality! The thing about this show is that each character is developed so well and each have great personalities it's hard to pick just one that I like. I like several, each for different reasons. I settled on Azula for my favorite, but Toph and Zuko are very close to a tie with her. Iroh is an amazing character, but he's not really one of my favorites.

Toph is like backround awesome and there is no arguing about her awesomeness which is probably why she doesnt have more votes. Like alot of people love Zuko but others call him whiney emo boy so the people who love him feel like protecting him from bashing so they become hardcore fangirls/boys so of course will always vote for him in any poll. Toph doesnt have that she's just all round appreciated and loved!
I would say Toph is the character I am most like (though not in such an awesome way) Im a real tomboy who loves to play rough and puts on a tough facade and usually dont talk about feelings too much, but underneath we do have a soft side particularly when it comes to a certain boy who is also a very good friend.

^I am also probably most like Toph. I'm more of a tomboy and usually act tough like her. Though I also have a confident (sometimes cocky) attitude like Azula has. I'm pretty sure I'm not quite that evil, though ;]
Still Song for me--even though she's never reappeared. I like that she was able to leave an impact on arguably the most popular character which started his redemption. Too bad she's never going to get repaid for that ostrich horse though.
Song was the most well adjusted character on the show: she's proof that you don't have to be a bender or a fighter to be strong. I miss her. And I'm sad at how much potential was wasted by not bringing her back.
Then again, if she had been brought back, she might have gotten the same treatment as Teo, Haru, The Duke and Jin--background scenery. -_-

Ever since first sitting down and beholding the majesty of Avatar in 2005, I had my eye on Aang. Of all the characters throughout the show, it was he that made me laugh and captured my attention the most.
I totally agree with Amira on the subject of the heart of a character being the real hook. This is quite so with Aang: he's a genuinely kind and dedicated person, but not perfect. He has foibles I find interesting and perks that make me love him all the more.
My vote goes, 110%, to my favorite--and adorable!--little arrow-headed monk.
Second after Aang would probably be Sokka. He's written very cleverly and both his humorous and serious sides are just stupendous to watch. I love when he gets all down to business, though, because he actually has some really great moments.
My favorite character is Toph for several reasons. *She wears green. Best color ever. *She's blind, yet she's the coolest earthbender ever. Disabilities rule! Einstein was missing part of his brain, but look at him! *She's not really a... nice person, but she's confident and assertive. But that makes her all the more awesome. *She's nonchallant. *She's unstoppable. Seriously, the Dai Li were trained from birth to be elite agents, they're at the prime period in their life and they were still no more than a nuisance to her. *She's funny. I like seeing her react with Sokka. *She's not too likable. She has character flaws which are believable. An overly perfect character is shallow. A good character is conflicted.
My other favorite characters are Zuko and Sokka. Then the rest are pretty much even. This show has no poorly written characters. My favorite background character is the Boulder. I'm not sure why.

Appa PWNS Zuko. I don't care what you say. Heyyyyy I'm the only one who voted for Appa! The majority voted for the Fire nation. The Fire Nation is STUPID,People!!!!STUUUUUUUPIIIIIIIIDDD!!!!! Why else would they think they own the world?
My favourite character is Azula. She's probably one of the best villains I've seen. Her cruelty and manipulative behaviour are two traits that really stand out to me. Being intelligent, powerful, and bent on world domination also supports my love for her character. I'm looking forward to seeing her in future episodes with her going crazy and all.
^Me too. xD But he's an interesting character surrounded by conflict. I guess characters like that tend to grab the audience's attention, plus it doesn't hurt that he's one of the best looking male characters.
Azula's a great character as well, despite how evil she is. She'd win my vote in favorite villain. =P
But I can't choose between Zuko and Sokka as my fav. character. Who doesn't love Sokka? The show would not be as entertaining without Sokka's witty/sarcastic comments. He provides us with all the best humor, and I love him for that. xD
