When the characters curse like they're rapping. From the MiSTing site. From Detours by Arekisu, curses bleeped by me. "Sc-w you, you g-dd-mned son of a b--ch!" Echo screeched as they started to drag her away, along with Suki. "Your beloved fire is going to burn you in h3ll! You're the most obnoxious thing ever to have lived, and you have that f--king scar on your ugly face to prove it!" I mean who does "echo" think she is? 50 cent?

Yeah. I don't make my characters cuss a stream.
One cuss word per sentence when I actually use profanity in my stories.

Okay, this isn't much of a rant but more of what I hate seeing in fanfics.....
I am getting REALLY tired of yaoi/shounen-ai fics. There are way too many, and they're all for the same pairings!!! I used to somewhat like shounen-ai but not anymore. It's overdone. And this applies to more than just fanfiction. Everytime I go onto deviantART, I see the same topics for art and the same artists on the front page. Yeah, I like Naruto as much as the next guy, but it gets tiring to see it EVERY SINGLE DAY, and it's usually SasuNaru. I. Can't. Stand. SasuNaru. Anymore. I despise shounen-ai pairings now. I hate hearing about them!!! All the nice heterosexual fics/art/whatever and non-pairing fics/art are getting blocked out by mega homo sex fics/art.
TRY SOMETHING ELSE, PEOPLE.
All you're telling me is that you'd think it "hot" if your brother or male cousin or male whoever was gay. Deny it all you want; all gay stuff is the same.

I'm sick and tired of seeing all of these 15-16 year old fangirl artists getting 1,000,000 views for drawing yaoi pics of Naruto and Sasuke! But on with fanfiction again, I don't think this needs any explanation. I was making my rounds on the RuroKen archives when this caught my eye: You should read the one paragraph that made up the first chapter. Yeah, writer anonymous, there is a separate website for non-fanfiction ya know. It's called fictionpress.com. And if you have to beg for a review for a rather horrible prologue for a story that is not part of any particular fandom, don't do it in the title.

this might be diverting slightly off topic from the subject currently at hand, but I feel it is relevant to the thread as a whole.
a good writer knows what a good fanfic is, and what one is not. They'll know if someone has a MAry Sue, or uses an overdone concept... etc, etc. rant rant rant blablabla, Toph is bada**, yadayada, all that jazz.
similar to just about everyone else, I don't understand why peoplem get defensive when someone constructively criticizes their work. like fanfiction.net says, not everyone will strictly pairse your work. be thankful that they took some of their valuabale time to help you become a better writer (bah, that was a terrible rip at what it said. I'm never gonna try to do that from memory again ... lol)
I mean, I understand if the author comments on someone's critism giving raesons, provided their reasons are valid... I mean, I've clarified information when someone criticized me before, but only because it was a misunderstanding. then I went back and edited it in the hopes that it would be more clear to other readers. depending on where I am, I won't be afraid to give the cold hard truth about what I think fo someone's fanfic. I also hope that others will do the same to mine... I mean, like everyone else knows, the more feedback you get, the better you'll become.
so yeah. that's my rant. ~Katara~

I agree that there should be much more constructive criticism instead of "OMG this is so cute!" and "Update now plz."
But a big pet peeve of mine is when I get a really long review pretending to be constructive criticism. And it definitely isn't. It's happened a few times, and I never quite know what to do about it. Constructive criticism involves suggesting what an author could do better. These reviews just told me everything I did wrong with nothing constructive about them.
The worst of it is, when I replied to one of these and pointed out that there was nothing helpful about the review, the person got angry and told me I just couldn't take criticism and sucked more for it. So now I just ignore them.
So pretending to be a good solid reviewer and using it as an excuse to bash people? Giant. Pet. Peeve.

Ones that tell you only what's wrong can be considered mild flames, even if the person is trying to be helpful. But a good review has both positive and negative comments. It's good to tell someone what's wrong but you should add what makes a piece good, too. That way, a person will continue doing what's good and fix the bad.

So now I just ignore them. So pretending to be a good solid reviewer and using it as an excuse to bash people? Giant. Pet. Peeve. Personally I think that is some of the best criticism to get. I have an art teacher who is very straight forward, if your works sucks he ain't gonna sugar coat it for ya. The standard crit from him is and I quote "This is sh*t...do it over". Yeah..not the most elegant way nor nicest way to crit, but it definatly gets your arse in gear. In fact he said to the entirety of the class one day that "Guess what? you all suck!" Now that may seem harsh but hey, we are practicing to do this stuff for a living, we can't delude ourselves into thinking we are god-like artist if we are anything but. A major pet peeve of mine wether it be for fanfiction or art is when people think that you can't crit something just because you may not be as good as the person you are criting. ANYONE can see flaws, and anyone can pinpoint something that may not seem quite right in a drawing or in a peice of writing. You do NOT have to be Poe or Da Vinci in order to crit a peice of work. It is especially bad on deviantART. I see people leave wonderful critiques sometimes, and what do they get in return? Insults..."WTF your work isn't as good as mine, why don't you work on yours first/you have no right to say it/you're an idiot/blahblahblah" and are then zerged by all the "good" artist little fanbrats and then some drama ensues...

It's good to tell someone what's wrong but you should add what makes a piece good, too. That way, a person will continue doing what's good and fix the bad. I did this to two authors, and I got different outcomes for both. I gave concrit to one author, and she thanked me for it, despite that I told her what was wrong with her story and how to make it better. I gave concrit to another, basically said the same thing, and she deleted the story (and as of now, still hasn't reposted it). And, I reminded both of them that their stories were good, and that the criticism was to improve it so that it could be understandable to other readers. To be frank, each story got a hefty amount of reviews: the former had around 50 reviews and the latter had a whopping 600. And, the thing is, I was pretty much the only person who actually gave any form of concrit... (For the latter, in case you say, "You probably didn't read all 600 reviews!" No I didn't. But if you read through the first twenty pages that displayed nothing but "Wow! Great chapter! Plz update!!" you get the idea.) I mean, I don't consider contricism "flaming" unless you're trying to be malicious. Plus, I always add an optimistic message before or after. I don't just flat out say, "you had a mountain of spelling errors in the third paragraph of chapter six". Now that would be kinda mean, the unintentional kind that Chibi was talking about. Anywho, I get annoyed when a story's summary pretty much describes how much the author sucks at writing summaries instead of the actual story.

I used to have a Zutara story on FFNet (since deleted because I wised up and realized it wasn't very good).
I had one OC in it. She was younger than Zuko but already a master Firebender and had "a figure any girl would envy" (my exact words. D: ). And she joined up with Aang & Co. in order to help them rescue Katara from Zuko who had captured her in order to use her as bait to capture Aang. And her name was Aimee.
Only, Zuko gets called home because Ozai found out he has a girl on board and so he can come home because he has a bride. Oh, and Zuko has feelings for Katara and "imprisons" her in a pretty nice room and has dinner with her every night.
I got some reviews, once of which said "I really like Aimee; she's a great character and not a Mary Sue at all!"
Fortunately, I realized my story wasn't very good and eventually baleeted it.

^I'm sorry to hear that. D:
But there's always a day to make it up again. ^_^
To avoid Mary/Gary-Sue/Stu-ness, I never write OC.
Well, that's a lie. What I mean is, they're never central characters. They're just, you know, kinda there.
I think so many people make their OCs so horrible is because they're afraid that the readers won't accept them, so they make them too, perfect. Perfect in a way that the writer would make themselves out to be if they were a character in the series.

^ This is why I don't make OCs for fandoms anymore. I just make OCs for my original stories.

I haven't actually written any fanfiction lately. I usually make it up in my head but never write it out. And I make up OCs in my head, but they usually always work as side characters.

When I've been watching the new episodes, I've been narrating it in my head as if it were a fanfic.
For instance:
He really couldn't believe he was babbling on like this. Did he really expect they were just going to say "Oh it's okay Zuko, that's just water under the bridge. Sure you can join our group and teach Aang Firebending. We totally trust you."
By Agni, he was such an idiot. And from the expression on Katara's face, he knew she would rather roll around in animal poo than have him join the team. And he didn't blame her at all. He would've felt the same way.
