We all know about the "Swamp Theory" with Toph supposedly being Ummi's reincarnation. And of course, Aang is infatuated with Katara. Now, what if he were to somehow find out that Toph is the one who's destined for him, and not Katara? How do you guys think he'd react?
Denial.
Flat out denial.
He's too in 'love' with Katara to even consider Toph.
He might even start laughing, thinking it was a joke.
Aang: "Oh good one! You guys really got me there! Whoo! Man! Toph? And me?! I love Katara and I'm sure she loves me."
Kuruk: "Well...yes, she does love you...."
Aang: "See? But I gotta say, it was good joke."
Kuruk: "But your earthbending master is...was my Ummi."
Aang: "Okay, now you're starting to sound annoying. And besides, Toph doesn't even resemble her. Not to mention she certainly isn't lady-like and demure and girly and all those things most girls are."
Kyoshi: "YOU don't resemble us in the slightest. We're talking spiritual re-birth here. Not physical or personality."
Aang: "No. No, you guys are wrong. Katara's my Forever girl. Not Toph. Can't be Toph. I doubt Toph even thinks like a girl."
Yang Chen: "That is a horrid thing to say. Air Nomad manners must have slipped while I was gone."
Aang: "I'm sorry. But you guys are taking this joke too far. I like a good prank now and then, even if it is on me. But isn't this a little much?"
Roku: "We merely wished to shed some light on your past lives."
Aang: "Not my destiny?"
Kuruk: "Destinies change with each action you take Aang. Responsibilities don't."
Aang: "So Toph is my responsibility now?"
Roku: "Kuruk does not mean that, Aang. What he meant to say was your destiny is what you make of it. But you still have responsibilities that do not change."
Aang: "Like returning balance to the world."
Kyoshi: "Exactly. Who you love, will love or have loved is your own choice."
Aang: "Oh. So it's all just co-incidence then?"
Yang Chen: "If you wish to look at it that way."
Aang: "Toph's one of my best friends...one of my few friends...and I'm happy that she's part of my life. I just don't see her that way."
Kyoshi: "Why not? She is a fine young lady."
Kuruk: "You're just saying that because she's an earthbender."
Kyoshi: "Ahem...we're supposed to be nudging him in the RIGHT direction."
Aang: "I can hear you."
Roku: "Why don't you look at Miss Bei Fong in that manner Aang?"
Aang: "Because she's my friend! It'd be...you know...weird."
Yang Chen: "Katara's your friend too."
Kuruk: "She's certainly not hard to look at. In fact I've never seen a more beautiful earthbender in my existence."
Kyoshi: "Ahem."
Kuruk: "You're dead. You don't count."
Aang: "Yeah, Toph is pretty. But I won't tell her that. She'd hit me."
Yang Chen: "Is that all you have to say about her?"
Aang: "Well, she's no Katara. I mean she's pushy, a little mean, gets her points across with her fists."
Kyoshi: "How rude."
Aang: "She can be sometimes."
Kyoshi: "I was talking about you. If she weren't as you say, 'Pushy', would you have learned earthbending that fast?"
Aang: "Of course not! And I'm glad I met Toph! And I never said that she's mean all the time!"
Yang Chen: "Go on."
Aang: "She tries to hide it all the time, but I think Toph's got a sweet side to her. I kinda like that side. But it's weird to see her all giggly and stuff. I mean she look way cute when she does, please don't tell her I said that."
Kyoshi: "We won't. Avatars' honor."
Aang: "But Toph isn't 'cute'. I mean she is cute but she's not cute cute."
Yang Chen: "We don't follow."
Aang: "Argh. I mean Toph's...Toph. She's strong, a great friend, packs a mean right hook. She doesn't have to be cute or girly. I like her just the same. I mean I like her the way she is. I mean...you know what I mean!"
Roku: "So, Miss Katara is your dream girl and Miss Bei Fong is just a girl to you?"
Aang: "Yes...No. I mean she's my best girl friend....that didn't come out right..."
Kuruk: "It's open to translation."
Aang: "It's confusing that's what it is."
Yang Chen: "You seemed confident that Katara was your perfect girl. Why is it confusing now?"
Aang: "Because you're trying to make me think of Toph."
Kyoshi: "Kuruk merely brought up that she's Ummi's spiritual re-incarnation. You found it ridiculous, so naurally we asked why. Any further thoughts on Toph Bei Fong were your own."
Roku: "Aang, life isn't set in stone. Things happen. You can't control everything. We may all be The Avatar but even we can't control life and all it's complexities. If you truly feel that Miss Katara is your true love, then we wish you all the luck and happiness. Just remember Aang, life has its ups and downs. Things don't always turn out the way we wish."
Yang Chen: "Learning to deal with life's little hitches is what's important. Now, I believe you have some Firebending to learn?"
Aang: "I do. They're probably wondering why I'm here so long. Boy, wait till Toph hears about this. She'll bust a gut laughing."
Kyoshi: "I'm sure she will have some thing to say about it."
It's not everyday you see a couple wrestling thugs at a restaurant. XD) Anyways, they are staying true to themselves as individuals while being together and that makes it realistic. The same can be said about how DamageCtrl portrayed them in Whisper into the Sky. Again, Toph's tough-as-nails but Aang can handle that about her. Aang's flighty and she can handle that about him as well.
