Blood pounded in Hyana Kino’s ears. She was running for her life in an endless house of corridors. Flames licked her aching bare feet, scorching them with tongues of flame. Wooden boards cracked underfoot as the fire danced across their surfaces. She felt as if she could taste the bitter-sweetness of Death already.
Suddenly, the corridor ended, and everything grew darker as Hyana skidded into a large circular room. She had left the fire far behind her. Hyana’s vision clouded out, leaving nothing but shadows and the faint smell of fire. It took Hyana a minute to realize that furious tears of pain had appeared in her eyes. She brushed them away quickly but placed her hand over her mouth in horror at the scene in front of her.
The flames had entered the room, and they were encircling a waterbender in a pale-blue robe made of a silky material. The waterbender’s black hair swung around her shoulders furiously as she tried to block out the fire with the water encircling her hands. Mahoko was here!
Hyana felt her mouth open in a gasp, but no sound came out. The only thing she was able to hear was the flames crackling and the girl’s hands whipping through the air in perfect melody to her water. Hyana stretched out her hand to help Mahoko, but she was too far away. Hyana seemed stuck to the floor, and she was forced to helplessly watch as the waterbender Mahoko’s calm, ocean-blue eyes disappeared beneath the dancing flames…

Hyana awoke with a start, slamming her forehead into the bottom of the bunk above her. Pain clouded Hyana’s eyes for a moment, reminding her of the vivid scene she had just witnessed during her dream.
“ That’s stupid; Mahoko’s probably safe somewhere nice, and I’m certainly not facing fire after the accident I had,” Hyana said aloud, rubbing her scarred arms and wincing.
Hyana pushed back the covers of her bunk bed and quickly slipped off her faded black nightgown. She remembered with a frown the words her aunt had said, with a manner of disgust, when she had noticed Hyana changing into it one day: “ Simply preposterous! Simply preposterous indeed!”
Hyanafrown disappeared, a smile breaking across her tired face. Quickly, she slipped into new underwear and an ankle-length dress, and tied a scarf around her arm. She washed her face at the pitcher, then combed her silky hair and slipped a ruffle-y black headband into it. Finally, she slipped on her socks and boots. Hyana paused briefly to examine herself in her circular mirror before heading to the kitchen for a cup of jasmine tea.

Hyana slipped through the streets quietly, careful not to meet anyone’s eye. She had a long list of things to get in another section of Lotus City, and wasn’t expected until sunset. She carried a big basket with her. The basket was light now, but Hyana thought of how it would be almost unbearably heavy at the end of her trip.
A small breeze caressed Hyana’s smooth face. As she looked up at the cloudless sky, her gray-green eyes filled with longing of the world she used to know. That rarely seen world had been her home, not a city named after a flower; her constant struggle for daily survival had made her life…interesting. That was all fading into memories now, memories Hyana still grasped tightly, memories she tried not to let go…
“What am I supposed to do now?” Hyana asked the sky quietly, gripping her empty basket to her chest tightly…
Suddenly, Hyana’s clouded eyes became normal again. She laughed uneasily.
“There’s no need to dwell in the present when there’s an angry aunt waiting to receive her meds,” Hyana smiled, before heading off to find an herb shop or a medical clinic.
