Too bad bass is the most over-played, over-rated instrument. Only a few bassists really play the bass guitar beyond basic walking lines and guitar supplements. Mark Hoppus, Pete Wentz and Mikey Way don't count.

Hey, have to represent the viola faction here. (I'm going to a music conservatory as a viola major, so I've got the love in full force)
The viola has a cool sound, the color of it is very unique because the proportions of size to range on the viola aren't the same as the rest of the string family. It is big and awkward and hard to play, but if you give it enough attention, you can do some really awesome things on the viola and make music you could not achieve on the cello or violin.
And as for the clef...alto clef is great. It's right in the middle. If you learn alto clef first, the other clefs are easy..down a step for bass, up a step for treble. (just change the octaves too) Plus, if you're not sure, all you have to remember is that the middle of the ||3 is middle C. Works for any C clef (like tenor clef or whatnot). It's an archaic clef...not sure why viola kept it. But it's nice to be unique.
And when you really think about it, the viola's not that much bigger than the violin...it's just that the violinists heads are so much larger in comparison to their instrument! (kidding...bad string player humor)

My vote? I would have to go with the violin. But that's probably because I play it and have grown to love it. lol I think the cello's a good choice too because it's sound is absolutely gorgeous. But you choose what you want =]

I don't like the viola, but maybe that's because the people in my orchestra can't play it well at all and it sounds gross.

Cello! Yo-Yo Ma FTW. But really, I love the deep resonating sound of the cello and unlike the other strings it doesn't irritate me if I listen to it for extended periods of time.

Cello = win. Except I have a hard time switching to second position on faster songs and staying in tune. =P

I'm so bad at shifting but if I shift to the right position, then I usually don't sound so bad.

Guitar is so generic. Then again, I suppose violin is, too.
