Fenny was surprised how cool it was outside. She shivered a bit as a breeze coming down off the mountains made her damp jacket, slick with sweat, cling with a new icyness. The sun had sunk, leaving behind a darkening sky and nearly-lavender sand. People were begining to light torches. She sighed as she looked at the glowing lights, then reprimanded herself. Times weren't what they had been. She had to be careful not to slip up, especially with this Matsu fellow around. He had begun to make her a bit apprehensive with his sullen speaking and strange actions. Why would anyone run away from their caravan? And what had happened to his arm? ...Did she even want to know? Maybe she would be better off avoiding him least he call unwanted attention... but he really did seem to need help. And there was something else about him too, that made Fenny not want to run away from him.

Fenny really had no idea how much help Matsu needed. Rubbing his arm still he looked at the torches sadly, remember the day when he could have lit all of them easily. Fenny's action still surprised him. He hadn't met anyone lately so foreful and forward as she was. Well he could have and not have remembered it at any rate, he could barely even remember the family who rescued him. He decided he need to stick with Fenny, unless she wanted to run him off at any rate. He felt drawn to her, someone who would be his friend. He stood next to her as he saw her shiver and he looked back at his arm. Kauri, Kauri had been studying to be a healer back home. SHe wanted to go into the battles and help the hurt soldiers. He remembered her telling him that little things could get into him and cause an infection if wounds weren't kept clean and that could kill a soldier. To him the idea of little beasts crawling around on him and in him was ridicoulus. The idea of bad chi or something of the sort was a lot more believable to him. However, he had promised her if he ever got hurt he would keep the wounds clean Now here he was with no arm that was in pain and was not looking well with dirty bandages. "Fenny" He said softly, he didn't want to ask for help, but he was desperate.

"Mmm?" came her articulate reply. It took Fenny a moment to break her reverie. "What is it?" She turned back to look at him: a pitiful fellow, rather sunburned from his folly earlier, clothes dirty and old looking. Fenny couldn't help but be reminded of her own jacket when she first found its tattered remains and had begun piecing it back together.

He looked at her for a moment and then he let out a sigh that made his shoulders drop. "I need your help." He said quietly. "I don't mean to be a burden....but I promised." He took his arm away from his stub, blood was starting to soak the dirty bandages again. "Could you help me find...some new bandages?" He asked, removing his gaze away from her looked off into the horizon.

The bandages were starting to unravel, too sodden to hold tightly anymore. Fenny did her best not to wince at the sight. Blood was not her strong suit. Burns she was used to, it was simply a matter of raw skin and later, scar tissue. Blood meant cutting or breaking or ripping.
"You'll need to wash that first. No point in new bandages if they're going to be immediately soiled." Fenny looked around for water, then mentally slapped herself. Duh! They were in the desert. Very little water. After a moment of looking around, however, she noticed the ice spring in the middle of the oasis. She stepped over to it, fishing a dagger out of her boot to chip off a bit of ice. When she had a sizeable piece, she got back up and walked back to Matsu. "This... might sting a bit." she admitted, hesitating a moment uncomfortably as she tried to find a good angle before she applied it to the wound. The ice, caught between two warm bodies, began to melt, taking most of the dirt with it as it dripped away.

The injury appeared to be burned, or at least a little. It looked like who ever had dealt with it had tried to cauterize the injury, but not very well. It had become infected and the pus had burst from the skin, causing the injury to start bleeding again. Matsu hissed. He was a soldier, he would not feel the pain, he would not feel the pain. No, he felt it. He still put on a brave face. "It doesn't hurt as bad as the accident." He said quietly, looking at Fenny. He was aware of uncomfortable she had to be, he certainly was. He looked away as the red stained water dripped and evaporated on the still hot desert ground. "Thank you." He said.

"I'm sorry." murmured Fenny without thinking. She abruptly stepped back, having surprised herself with the comment. What in the world was she sorry for? She was only helping a vague aquaintance. To cover her sudden movement she used her knife to cut off some fabric from the back end on her sash to bind the wound with. It wasn't like she was going to be using it anytime soon. She wrapped the fire-proofed fabric around what was left of his arm, binding it just tightly enough that the fabric wouldn't fall off. She then picked up the old bandages and handed them back to him. " You're gonna want to clean these and use them again. We're in the desert now, afterall. Most materials will be scarce before we end this trip." She automatically looked into his face as she spoke, but then turned away quickly to put her knife away. For a moment there had been something in his eyes that had scared her... but maybe it had just been the torchlight.

"Fire proof?" He asked as he touched the new cloth tenderly while holding the leftover bandages in the same hand. "Are you afraid of the firebenders?" He asked, his voice had dropped dramtically, no one needed to over hear their conversation now.

Fenny grinned lopsidedly at Matsu's whisper, standing back up. "Not so much, no." The question seemed so ironic to her. "But you think I just wear this for style?" she leaned back on her hips, effectively showing off the large bow. "Have you dealt with this sort of fabric before? It has a very tight weave. Not easy to make."

A small smile cross his features, the first one in a long time as he saw her lopsided grin. "I didn't realize.." His eyes traveld down her body to her hips before they shot back up immeditly, he didn't want to seem rude. "I never made my own." When would he learn to shut up? Well, he might as well figure out some of her past. "I don't see many others wearing it unless......they themselves are of the firenation." He looked at her directly, trying to catch her eye.

Fenny ignored Matsu's glance. It was something she was used to. Before, it was even something she had been taught to work for. Hypnotise your audience with your body. All eyes must be on the dancer. "FireNation?" Fenny frowned. It was now her turn to make sure her voice was low. "Yes, I suppose they would use the fabric commonly. A few years ago there became a big trade in it for earth kingdom soldiers. Prices went up pretty high, so we had to start making our own in the bogs. Let me tell you, soaked thread is a pain to weave." she stretched her fingers, remembering the cramps she used to get in her hands.

"I'm very greatful that you would give up some for whats left of my arm." Matsu said and then looked around. The caravan would soon be leaving. Refugees that were left were slowly packing their things and sometimes an earthbender would use his skills to help others back. Feeling the earth tremble would make his stomach lurch, to many memories of the battle. He was still very uneasy around earthbenders. "M'lady Fenny, may I ask that I travel with you? I seem to need your help frequently." He asked.

"I don't mind at all, as long as you drop the 'm'lady' crud. It makes me sound like I'm a handmaiden of the Earth Queen." Fenny stuck her tongue out at the thought. "Anyway, I could use the company. I've been traveling alone long enough." She watched as a family to her left prepared to leave. The young mother carried a sleeping baby in her arms while the husband carried what little they owned in a small sack. The mother was smiling contentedly. Whatever hardship they were dealing with, they still had each other. THAT SHOULD BE ME a part of Fenny's brain screamed, and her heart twanged a bit. She snuffed it quickly and turned to watch some earthbenders watch a sandbender with awe as he smoothed the dunes to better acommodate the large group.

Matsu smiled when she stuck out her tounge. "I'm only trying to be polite." He watched the family with the baby and his smile faded to a sad frown. He looked at Fenny briefly to see what she was looking at and saw her watch the family for a moment. Maybe this was something they had in common. "I was going to be engaged....but I never got to ask."

"Maybe you should have made a move sooner." Fenny replied vaguely, walking towards the sandbenders who were loading items onto a sandsailor. This was too much for Fenny, especially when she had just met Matsu. As chatty and forward as she was, her past was not something she threw around. It was much to weighty for that. And even if she did feel she could talk about it, she wasn't sure if Matsu could handle it. Some things were just... woman things. "These are rather small to carry so many people." she told one of the sandbenders. "We're splitting people up into groups on the sandsailors for the first half of the journey, which will take two nights at best. Then you're on foot through the mountains." the swathed young man told her absently as he helped load cargo.
