i Havnt seen another ma thread so please dont banish me So this is the place for all the martial artists out there to talk about what they do and why they love it Im a red belt in taekwondo (though i might be grading next week but i highly doubt that because ive missed so many classes because of work) ive been doing it for about 3 and a half years. My fav part is doing patterns and pad work and sparring if im in the mood. so what about you?
BTW we will have no style bashing here all styles have their pros and cons its like saying what is the best element

hmmm.... i thought we had a thread about martial arts some where. Eh oh well it's probably buried some where deep. Taekwondo is great for cardio and strengthening the legs, I used to know a guy that was ranked #3 collegiately (in the US) and was training for the Olympics. Dude had some killer work outs I've done martial arts all my life, lets see... 8 years of shotokan karate, when i was very little and quit when i was a blue belt (i got bored and picked up tennis instead ) 5 years of 5 animal style southern shaolin kung fu. 1 year of kendo for kicks when I was in college. 1 year of chin woo (basically northern shaolin). Just recently started doing wing chun, i'm coming up on my 1 year mark. Mixed in all of that are a few classes of ba qua, tai chi, judo and taekwondo.

Watching or competing? I'm a pretty casual fan of MMA but i do watch the major events. Not a huge fan of San Shou though, just my personal opinion but i hate the gloves they make you use.
Competition wise, I think all martial artists should do some type of competition to help fortify their techniques. How? If you can't do a move correctly in a high stress situation you're probably not going to be able to use it ever.
When i was younger I participated in Karate tournements, katas and sparring.

Both actually (watching is fun but sometimes you wanna get right into it). San Shou's nice since it's a good break from the usually heavily grapple oriented (at least the one's I've seen) UFC. Though I'm just a casual myself

^ you should watch the K1 events, all striking (basically kick boxing) no grappling. Not K1-Heroes mind you, that's their MMA branch.

^ Lol, I remember you, you were the one that introduced me to San Shou (and for that I'm eternally grateful.)
K-1 is nice and I've seen a few ,but they kinda stopped broadcast here (phillipines).

In my town, there's no way I could find all that. We just have like Karate, Tae Kwon Do, Judo....maybe Tai Chi. I would love to learn kung fu! Uh! I'm so jealous!

Let's see here, i'm kinda back and forth wing chung, and have been for about three years (one of my personal faves). I took karate for about one year (one of the worst as far as personal defence to me). I've played around with dieduru (have no clue how to spell it) for about four years.
Now i'm planing next year to start some Tai Chi and Brazilian jiu jitsu.

Dude! Where do you go to? In my town, there's no way I could find all that. We just have like Karate, Tae Kwon Do, Judo....maybe Tai Chi. I would love to learn kung fu! Uh! I'm so jealous! I'm in Dallas TX. There's a pretty big asian community up here so it's not really hard to find kung fu schools (finding a good one is a different matter) Firerajah the CRYPTIC ☣Yeah a lot of the so called "karate" schools i've found suck Equus asinus because they generally teach a modified form of TKD or kick boxing. Seriously, the two major Karate styles I like are Shotokan (one of the oldest traditional japanese karate styles) and Kyokushin (full contact, bare knuckle Karate) If you're learning Tai Chi be patient with it. Also remember Tai Chi's combat style doesn't really take root until the practitioners understands and has the physical ability to do the techniques. As far as BJJ goes, I respect what is taught and how it's popular in professional and recreational 1 on 1 sport combat. However, I find it one of the most lacking martial arts when it comes self defense on it's own. By itself it can not be used when there is more than one assailant since the focus is being on the ground with one person. With the popularity of MMA though, most of the time BJJ is taught in combination with some sort of stand up style to help fill in the gaps.

It must be really hard to find a decent MA school in the US particuarly karate and taekwondo because there are so many rip off mc dojos where the instructor is hardly even qualified. I love my taekwondo but at the min im finding it very hard to attend and havnt been since chrismas my instructor probably thinks ive died. I really miss it but i just never get the time because school at the min has me exausted. I really need to get my MA mojo back.
