Oh, the Beatles. <3 I'm not an uber-fan, but I do like a lot of their music. Most of my exposure to them, however, came from the movie "Yellow Submarine." >.>;; Personal favorites are : All You need is Love, Hello Goodbye, and Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds.

Don't mean to post twice in a row, but I think that there's a lot more worth discussing. Namely . . .
SOLO WORKS!
After all, there was life after the break-up. So, Beatlemaniacs, do you listen to any of the Beatles' solo stuff and, if so, why do you like them? I'll hold off on my rant for now just because I want to survey who the more popular solo Beatles are.

I'm not fond of the beatles their songs were all a bit samey and dull for my tastes, Yellow Submarine is one of the most annoying songs ever..... I prefer the Rolling Stones.... The best Beatle solo wasn't even music... Ringo Star narrating Thomas the Tank Engine was amazing... I grew up watching Thomas the Tank Engine

I was referring more to musical efforts. On a different note, I always preferred George Carlin as Mr. Conductor.
I'll agree that, at times, the Beatles' music does get a bit repetitive and lame. But that's usually with the earlier works. As far as albums are concerned, I think that anything from Rubber Soul (1965) on is top-notch. Before that, it's just "Buy these records, please."
Now, on to my rant about solo works. There's really only one that does it for me: George Harrison (as I've mentioned elsewhere). John Lennon's stuff was just too preachy and, basically, helped give a springboard to Yoko. I like some of her work as an artist, but I can only take so much of her before I want to pull my hair out. Paul McCartney was pretty much only good at writing silly love songs (which is the title of one of his songs, I might add). He's my second-favorite solo Beatle simply because he's accessible. And Ringo . . . is just Ringo. That's it. He just gets by with a little help from his friends and the fact that he's Ringo freakin' Starr.
George, on the other hand, isn't pretentious and, for the most part, it gives me a glimpse at the state of mind he was in when he recorded them. With the exception of a few albums, he's always happy. And when he did get spiritual, it was all-inclusive.
He was a great slide guitar player. Any song by him has great slide work. It's hard to miss. Also, his songwriting was just as good as Lennon/McCartney. A lot of times, they had very complicated chord progressions and interesting instrumentation. It's just great to listen to.
Recommended Songs: "My Sweet Lord" from All Things Must Pass "Wah Wah" from All Things Must Pass "What is Life" from All Things Must Pass "Run of the Mill" from All Things Must Pass "Art of Dying" from All Things Must Pass "Give Me Love (Give Me Peace on Earth)" from Living in the Material World "Be Here Now" from Living in the Material World "Hari's On Tour (Express)" from Dark Horse "Dark Horse" from Dark Horse "You" from Extra Texture (Read All About It) "Beautiful Girl" from Thirty Three & 1/3 "This Song" from Thirty Three & 1/3 "Crackerbox Palace" from Thirty Three & 1/3 "Learning How To Love You" from Thirty Three & 1/3 "Love Comes to Everyone" from George Harrison "Here Comes the Moon" from George Harrison "Blow Away" from George Harrison "Faster" from George Harrison "Your Love Is Forever" from George Harrison "All Those Years Ago" from Somewhere in England "Flying Hour" from Somewhere in England (digital download) "Wake Up My Love" from Gone Troppo "Cloud 9" from Cloud Nine "This Is Love" from Cloud Nine "Someplace Else" from Cloud Nine "Got My Mind Set On You" from Cloud Nine "Any Road" from Brainwashed "Marwa Blues" from Brainwashed "Never Get Over You" from Brainwashed "Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea" from Brainwashed

So I've been thumbing through the May 1 issue of Rolling Stone and I come upon this on page 51:
Best DIY Reissues: Beatles Remasters
"The Beatles' albums came out on CD in 1987, but fans have long complained that the early digital technology used to remaster the recordings left them sounding hollow and thin -- and that the official remasters are way overdue. That's where Purple Chick comes in -- A secretive fan (or group of fans) who has been quietly remastering classic discs like Revolver and A Hard Day's Night, and releasing the digital files for free online. How is this possible? The Beatles' CDs sound so bad that carefully digitized tracks from pristine vinyl copies are noticeably better -- with crisper highs, a fuller soundstage, and more realistic reproduction of instruments and voices. And the Purple Chick editions are superior to the originals in other ways, too: The Sgt. Pepper collection contains the original record in mono and stereo, and four discs' worth of studio outtakes; the White Album comes in a whopping twelve-disc version, including alternate takes, studio chatter, demos and fascinating jams. So how do you get this stuff? Google is your friend: Try searching "purple chick and megaupload" to get started."
--Andy Greene
Thoughts? Holding out until the remasters finally come around? Gonna rush out and get these remasters before Apple Corps puts the hammer down?

I used to not like them so much. Then in grade nine my friend played me one song that made me want to hear more. 'Something'. From that point on I became a huge fan. I started by putting their entire discography on my ipod and put the entire list on repeat. Needless to say I couldn't get enough. Now when I watch a movie or hear a remix I automatically know it's a Beatles song (and say it out loud which annoys my sisters to no end). I find it funny when I tell them a certain song is from the Beatles and they say they always knew the song but not who it was by. I was so stoked when I heard that Cirque Du Soleil was doing 'Love' with only Beatles songs. I can't wait to go see it.

Hooray! Another fan! "Something" (and anything by George, really) rocks my socks.
So I'm gonna follow up on my posting about Purple Chick's reissues. I downloaded the Purple Chick edition of Abbey Road I did the whole Pepsi Challenge thing on my favorite song of all time: "Here Comes the Sun." When pushed play on the Purple Chick version, I was amazed at how full the sound was. I picked up on sounds that I didn't know were there on the CD versions. If this is but a taste of what the eventual reissues will sound like, I'm gonna preorder my copies the day I get word of it.
My only bugaboo is that the Purple Chick versions are only available on with the FLAC codec. Although it's free, iTunes does not yet support it. Which means if I want these on my iPod, I have to go through a rigmarole to convert it to a format that it does understand. Not terrible, just irritating.
If you've got the time and the space on your hard drives, get these versions. They will rock your ever-lovin' socks off. Just don't screw this up for all of us and keep these free. I repeat. Do. Not. Sell. These. Reissues. But yeah, if you're a stickler for sonic quality, it's well worth the effort.

Sorry to double-post, but this is huge.
So I get to work and I check my email and I find this lovely bit of news:
That's right, folks. The Beatles' catalogue has been remastered and will be released on CD on 9/9/09. Digital downloads are still not open, but this is a step in the right direction. If it were only available for preorder . . .

Not adding much to the conversation, other than to say that I too am a big fan of Harrison's contributions. "Here Comes the Sun" is a song that always, always makes me smile when I hear it. It's beautiful. It might be one of the most perfect songs ever.

In the latest bit of Beatles news, this press release has been issued: The track list is as follows: - "Got My Mind Set on You"
- "Give Me Love (Give Me Peace on Earth)"
- "Ballad of Sir Frankie Crisp (Let It Roll)"
- "My Sweet Lord"
- "While My Guitar Gently Weeps (Live)"
- "All Things Must Pass"
- "Any Road"
- "This Is Love"
- "All Those Years Ago"
- "Marwa Blues"
- "What Is Life"
- "Rising Sun"
- "When We Was Fab"
- "Something (Live)"
- "Blow Away"
- "Cheer Down"
- "Here Comes the Sun (Live)"
- "I Don't Want To Do It"
- "Isn't It a Pity (Version One)"
- "Isn't It a Pity (Demo)" -- iTunes exclusive
It's a pretty solid compilation for newbies to George's music. I wish there would be a bit more songs from several albums that weren't represented and I don't think the songs he originally performed with the Beatles should be included, but it's still solid. Worth checking out.

Sometime this week, the nerddom-based network G4 will be announcing 15 new tracks for The Beatles: Rock Band.
