Even though I think this would generate interesting (and/or entertaining) discussion, I am locking it as a "versus" thread for now (while I think about the implications).
Update: You know, after thinking a bit, let's see how this goes. It's not really a superficial versus thread, and might generate some interesting discussion if dh peeps feel like putting forth the effort.

It does fit the CT, but it also fits here because you're discussing the possibilities of the books. It can stay here, though.

This topic has been discussed in my class because we read these two books in a row. I felt that it can go either way, because so much of this world is in celebration of sex. Its everywhere, everywhere you look there is a innuendo that can be related to it. We as humans have been fascinated by it since the dawn of time. Same as drugs, there are laws against them, but it so easy to get and so many people are on them that the laws are just superficial.
As far as the world made from fear, 9/11 is a great reference too, and then the subsequent Iraq War. Homeland Security was created, the US is being the US, trying to tell everyone else what to do, most of the time by force. As Americans still feel that we are insecure within our own borders seeing as how easy it was for 9/11 to be executed and how immigrants continue to flood into the borders.

I definitely think 1984's dystopia is more likely. It will always be human nature to rebel against injustice, and the only way to completely subdue rebellion would be through fear.
