Who else has read or is reading Memoirs of a Geisha by Arthur Golden? I'm still reading it, but I really like it so far. What do you think?
And a little favor of mine: Can you guys try not to reveal too much of what's gonna happen near the end of the book? I'm still readin and I don't wanna get spoiled. ^_^'

Oh, my gosh! This book is so great! And the ending, let me tell you about it...just kidding. I wouldn't do that.

The movie is good too but as always, the book was much better. Have you finished reading yet?

The book is like the original of the story. And when they made the movie it came different. Orginals are good. Same with anime with Eng and Jap versions where the Jap are better.

It's a great book, but a lot of the information is incorrect. The movie was beautiful too, of course, but I would suggest you to read Geisha: A Life by Mineko Iwasaki. It's much more accurate because it is her autobiography, and it's WONDERFUL. <3

I actually liked the movie better, even though I loved the book. Particularly the ending.

I'm late on this, but I finally finished the book. It was good, but I didn't watch the movie yet.

Loved this book when I first read it. It quickly became my favorite and quickly became quite battered as well. Golden is an amazing writer and I just loved the following young Sayuri throughout her life. There is a beauty in what a geisha is and does and it is fully presented in this novel.

Well, it got battered on partially good reasons. Golden's depictions of geisha are well and all, but the only thing I had a problem with was that he contridicts himself in the novel. While he wrote Sayuri saying that geisha and courtesans were not at all alike, he displayed Sayuri having multiple, er, experiences, when in reality their is no such "mizukage" tradition in the geisha world, and that geisha were to "entertain" not "please". Also, the real life geisha that he protrayed Sayuri after was not thrilled at this fact, and she didn't want to be mentioned in the acknowledges (which Golden did against her knowledge). I think it's because of this and past veteran experiences from WWII that the western world has this misconception that geiko were expensive prostitute.
Or, were you reffering to "battered" as in you read the book so many times?
