Okay, I saw G&G (I must not have seen as many as I thought because I certainly hadn't seen that ). I liked the episode. It was very effective emotionally which was good. I felt sad for Jin and for Shino, but I was glad they parted. She made him weak IMO. He allowed himself to be beaten, borrowed money from Mugen, begged her ... I thought it changed him in a depressing way. I was glad that he chose to continue with Mugen and Fuu rather than go with Shino. Although naked Jin almost makes up for weak Jin. Still it was very good and I'm glad I didn't skip it altogether like I almost did. I just can't like the pairing. I'm on to 12 later tonight if I can stay awake.

Maha, I'm with you, I wasn't a fan of Jin and Shino together, mainly because it did seem to weaken him. But it was a good character episode for Jin because we did get to see a softer side of him, and darn if the boy doesn't turn out to be a hopeless romantic. *swooon* So which episodes have you seen so far, and which have you missed? Did you watch everything up until 11?

So which episodes have you seen so far, and which have you missed? Did you watch everything up until 11? Now I'm not sure. I thought I'd gone through 12 but obviously I hadn't. Although I may not have been able to get 11 and skipped it. I'm going to check out 12 tonight to see. Then I might bounce back to see if I got 10, 9, 8 ... I know I saw more episodes than that back in the Fall when I was watching it. My brain doesn't remember. Anyway I did enjoy it and the character development for all of them was interesting. I got the feeling that Fuu has a little thing for Jin and Mugen has a little thing for Fuu. But maybe that's just me.

Freaking AS took it off Saturday lineup apparently. Also, they made a stupid joke about putting Samurai Jack on.

I just watched a bunch I hadn't seen! I guess I was skipping around. That's not like me. Anyway, I'm all caught up now through 14. How many are there total? I still think my favorite is the Misguided Miscreants duo of episodes (13/14). But I think G&G (11) comes in next ... although I really did like the one with the pick-pocket kid. What kind of mood am I in that I like all the depressing ones?

The depressing ones are very good though. Although I do love "Bogus Booty," where our boys once again find themselves in a brothel.

I just watched 'Bogus Booty'. It was #15. Very amusing. Although they have the worst luck with money. Either they're robbed (frequently with some sort of black-out episode attached), pick-pocketed, or it's counterfeit. They should resign themselves to living off the land. But I loved the episode where they read Fuu's diary. I loved how she always had something about food in there. So yeah, the funny ones are as good as the depressing ones. Go figure.

The diary episode was great - what a creative way to do a recap episode! I loved Mugen and Jin's reactions to what Fuu wrote, they were priceless. Favorite line of that episode? Mugen to Jin: "How do you feel? As a man?" I love those two and their dynamic, they're one of the best teams ever.

So last night I watched 16 and 17 (another two-parter) but I can't remember the name. Something about the 'lost'. It may now be my favorite. It was such a powerful episode. With Jin and the younger guy from his dojo and Fuu and Mugen with Okuru. Yeah, I'd say this show's getting better and better the more I learn about the different characters. I LOL'd when Mugen was insulting Fuu and Jin stepped in to challenge him. Fuu thought it was to defend her but it was because Mugen had referred to him as 'a dork with glasses.'

LOL, that is great! I loved that part. Jin: "It was not right to say that." Fuu: "Tell him! Tell him!" Jin: "'Dork with glasses' is unacceptable." Fuu: "Not that!" The episode was so well-done - Samurai Champoo oddly moves me quite often - it has some moments of hilarity, but then a lot of depth, too. Jin's fight with his fellow dojo partner and Mugen and Okuru's interaction was beautifully done - along with Fuu and Okuru's exchange. Interesting factoid: it's speculated that Mugen is actually an Ainu, just like Okuru, which is why he recognized the tune Okuru was playing. The theory is that Mugen's parents might have been Ainu that were shipped to Ryukyuu, for whatever reason, and that's where he wound up being born. That would explain Mugen's different looks, and his accent. I've been falling deeply in love with "Samurai Champloo." It's so good. Another wonderful episode is the two-part "Elegy of Entrapment." Beautiful ending. "Samurai Champloo" episodes have some of the more gripping endings - ones that kind of stick with you. The one for "Misguided Miscreants" is so well-done, just fabulous. I can't praise this show enough.

So I've finally done it. I finished it. I'm sad there were so few episodes. It's like Ouran. It makes sense for it to end there but I want more. Spoilers for last few episodes under tags: That was frickin' stressful! I really thought it was possible that they could have all the main characters die. They were so irreverent the whole time and unpredictable I thought they might break out of the box on that one too. But then I was a bit disappointed that Jin (and Mugen) came to this big realization that comrades were worth fighting/living for and then they went their separate ways! Of course in my imagination they meet back up again in another silly situation, but still ... Ah well. Good stuff. I didn't love the two filler eps -- zombies and baseball before the finale/trilogy but I guess everyone's got that going on. Good recommendation Lu. Now what?

I'm glad your liked "Samurai Champloo" - to me it's one of the best series out there, live-action or anime. You're right, the two filler episodes before the finale are almost skippable - in fact, they seem to almost occur in a sort of "alternate universe" scenario. I'm with you about the finale - it *was* stressful! Mugen was in the fight of his life, about three times! Especially with the guy with the eyepatch... there were times there that I thought he wouldn't make it. And then not seeing Jin for so long after he battled Kariya... and then him allowing himself to get run through! I think that's what moved me so much about the finale - you really see that both guys have come to care for Fuu so much they'd be willing to die for her. Mugen, who never works with anyone, gives up his sword for her safe release, Jin lets himself be injured just so he can strike a killing blow against Kariya and save Fuu. Awwwww. And I love it when they finally "battle" each other. "Look at us." "Honestly." And the smile on Fuu's face when they wake up and start eating, and the smile they have when they realize they were tricked at the start. I got the impression that even though all three went their own ways, they'd meet up again - it seemed to be a running theme in the series, that even when they'd split up (like in "Hellhounds for Hire" and "Lullabies of the Lost"), they'd find each other again. Probably pretty soon, considering they'd all have to take the ferry back to the mainland! Someone on another message board said their ideal scenario was Fuu eventually opening up her own tea shop/restaurant (since she loves food), with Jin and Mugen as the two baddest bodyguards in all Japan. Hmm... for a follow-up suggestion, I'd say give "Cowboy Bebop" a try. It's set in the future, but the themes are universal, and it's done by a lot of the same crew that did "Samurai Champloo," so it's high-quality.

I want to talk about things more specifically. Do we need spoiler tags? Are we the only two people even looking at this thread? Can we dispense with the tags or should we create a new thread for Samurai Champloo with spoilers? Such as Jin comforting Fuu. What was he going to say when he started with "If I..." before she cut him off to talk about Mugen?

Lethal Lunacy is the best episode I've seen so far.

Oh come ON! I LOVED the baseball one! It was so Freakin' funny! I agree that the zombie one wasn't great, but the baseball one had me crackin' up! And yes, I know that it was filler, but it was a good filler, IMO.
I should watch this show in Japanese.
