I just finished watching the movie yesterday. It's one of the few films I've watched that's ever had me close to tears. Anyway, this has been considered the greatest anime movie of all time, and Takahata's masterpiece. Thoughts?

i've heard it's a very powerful film but very very sad. Haven't watched it for that exact reason though, i don't like being sad

Purposefully avoiding it, myself. I'm not ready to watch it, yet ~ we discussed it a bit on pg. 7 of the Miyazaki thread ( link), and as I said there, even reading the back of the dvd case is enough to make me cry. But someday. . .

You know Chibi, it's actually not that bad. I saw Finding Neverland, which actually did make me cry (I know, I'm a wimp) while Grave of the Fireflies only made me close to tears. I know how you feel, you think it's going to be really heartbreaking, and I guess it is, but it's not as bad as you originally think. I guess the fact that you already know what's going to happen makes it easier to deal with. It's surprisingly short, too, it's only 88 minutes.

(And I didn't get to see Finding Neverland yet, either *sniff* but that's for another thread.) So, like I said, maybe I'll see Grave of the Fireflies when I'm 40 and all grown up. Er. . . 50.

I loved this movie too. "Grave of the Fireflies" is probably the only anime/cartoon movie I've ever seen that deals with the horrible effects of war, most importantly among the innocent citizens. It was the first Miyazaki film I've ever watched, and it made me cry.

It's actually not a Miyazaki film. Isao Takahata directed it. It was made by Studio Ghibli, though.

I wanna see this movie so bad but there's nowhere I can rent it. One of my friends has access to it, but it belongs to her brother. Know where her brother took the movie? To college!!! T.T

I saw this movie years ago when it was on television as part of an international animated film festival on a cable channel. I have never forgotten it. I had thought it was Miyazaki, but the storytelling style was so different from his other films (better IMO), I wondered what was up with that. I believe it shows up on Amazon when you search Miyazaki and that's why there's confusion.
Anyway, it's definitely worth seeing, but it will seriously haunt you. You'll survive and get on with your life, but it'll stick. It is definitely worth seeing.
