"Gake no ue no Ponyo," the new Miyazaki film currently in production, "is to be released in the summer of 2008. What’s interesting is that Hayao Miyazaki has written a story which revolves around a 5 year old boy Sosuke and the Princess goldfish Ponyo who wants to become human. Goro Miyazaki (Hayao's son) of when he was 5 years old has been chosen as the model for the main character Sosuke." ^ from www.ghibliworld.com/news.html#0204This page has pictures of some of the watercolored (!) storyboards. "According to Toshio Suzuki, Hayao Miyazaki reflected seriously about his relationship with his son Goro. The elder Miyazaki thinks Goro's debut as a director is a "resistance" to him and was caused because he was busy and did not care about Goro when he was a child. So, the 5 year old Goro became the model for Sosuke. A sense of closeness between a parent and child is also a theme for the film." ^ from Nausicaa.netAnd I'm happy that Joe Hisaishi is again expected to do the soundtrack. ;D

Naah, I think you had two of the first, but one was about "I Lost My Little Boy" (and I think it's gone) and the other is full of fluff after the first post. It'll be interesting to see how work on his new film evolves ~ and like you said in the 'Villains' thread, the kid with their head in a bottle sure is kawaii... except for the part where it looks like it's passing out from lack of air.

Five year-olds can be the star if they're created by Miyazaki.

Does it matter that the boy doesn't look five to you guys? It's Miyazaki. And considering Dis the dub, they'll make him older/younger anyway. Unless they got smart after Laputa where they changed preteens/young teens into older teens.
I for one, am planning to see it. My dad's excited too! We might end up going to NYC or Toronto depending on where it's playing... -crosses fingers it's like Spirited Away and plays everywhere-

I think just the storyboards are in watercolor ~ the coloring is probably digital, now, or animating it would take forever. Not sure, though ~ that would be reallyreally beautiful if it were. My candidate for Miyazaki's next story (should he choose to do more): www.amazon.com/Princess-Academy-Shannon-Hale/dp/1582349932It has strong female main characters and a beautiful setting... should be a shoo-in.

I can't believe I miss this, but why does it feel like I read this thread three times before. Although not my fave. genre of anime Miyazaki is like The ONE, so this would be interesting to see. Although I like the 'PA'. It does look interesting, and strong female leads usually grab my attention before anything. You're right TBC this one would be an awesome possibility.

I doubt I'll ever get to see it in a theater, but I still am excited about another Miyazaki film. I love all his movies, and a goldfish story sounds cute.
