I'm gonna suggest D.Gray-man! I've been obsessing over that anime lately 0.0 it kinda reminds me of FMA for some reason XD

Nobody mentioned Fruits Basket? www.fruits-basket.com/The anime makes it seem light and fluffy, but the manga is reasonably serious. It just finished its run a few months ago with the 23rd volume... and I gotta say, I've never seen anything like it. Yeah, the premise will remind you of Ranma 1/2 a bit (people transforming when hugged) but the storyline is actually really good. It's not been #1 for so long for nothing. ;D

Be sure to watch Blue Dragon, History's Strongest Disciple Kenichi, and Katekyo Hitman Reborn. Three very new and very popular anime in Japan.

I also wanted to add 'The Scrapped Princess' to the list...pretty darn good.

I really want to see Scrapped Princess. Ever since I started reading it and realized that they canceled it after three volumes. Did you know that it's also a book?
Anything else that I would have suggested has already been said, so no point in repeating it.
