Shucks, the people where nuts over Harry Potter before the first movie ever came out. People would line up for hours in fron of books stores to get the new book, stuff like that hasn't happened since ticket master started selling tickets online! I guess it's like so many things, the anime/movie doesn't do the book justice (unless like Miazaki's stuff, the master himself takes care of the matter) I can't stand Garfield cartoons, though I love the fat cat in the comics. Many of you complain, on how the Manga is so much better than the TV show (FMA, Fruits Baskets anyone?) It's like Audio books.... When you read a book you make yourself an image of the characters, how they look, what they sound like....when it makes it to the screen, someone else has taken over your imagination. You may not like their choice and the show is pretty much ruined for you. Same with Manga...you take the characters to sound a certain way, but the makers of the show have a different outlook. I grew up on dubbed shows and movies. You get used to a certain voice to go with that face. When that changes, it's just not right, the show loses apeal (or when they swapped actresses in Dallas for 'Miss Ellie' world wide riots broke out! )

Considering the japanese like everyone else in the world doesn't have the extra time to just sit around and watch anime. There could be different shows on at the same time they'd rather watch.
For instance if Battlestar Galatica was on the time air time as Avatar I'd probably watch BSG. The adults would be watching their TV during prime time when there are a multitude of different things one from the news, sports, dramas etc.
And like some people have said if they read the book they might not want to rehash the whole story over again by watching the anime. Since a lot of anime is based on going mangas the readers are generally further along on the plot line and know exactly what's happening in the anime long before it airs.

Anime is 2% of Japanese media, the rest are mostly, live action drama, sports, musical, or the news. The two most popular anime are Doramon and Kindachi and they not popular in the states. Even though Pokemon have died out in the states, its still popular in Japan since they keep making more episodes.

well when an exchange student from Japan stayed at my house for a couple of nights the way he said it made it sound like anime was much more mainstream than here.

Eihter the Japanese exchange student is lying to you or he is another Japanese otaku animation fan. Being accuse as a otaku is a social suicide in Japanese society. Japanese people have special taste of anime compare to your average anime fan and there do love Disney animations since most anime fans hate Disney.

Yeah all that stuff is really true. I always get annoyed when self proclaimed otakus rat on dubs, ages for watching anime, and thinking the know the culture just by watching the anime. Geeze i've met some pretty snooty fans in my lifetime.

Dubs can make or break an anime. There are some that I love, and always will love, and some that I just can't stand. For example, I like the dubs to most of the Mobile Suit Gundam series(though I haven't seen all of them) the dub of Akira(the second dub, not the first) and the dubs of the Miyazaki movies.
Sometimes a dub will only be half good, like in Naruto's. I absolutely love Shikamaru's voice, and think it's superior to the original Japanese voice. But it seems like they just screwed up with all the other characters. Sasuke's is all right, and Zabuza's and Gaara's are really good, but Naruto, Kakashi, Orochimaru, Third Hokage, Shino, and especially Sakura's voices are just subpar. It's strange how dubs can be awesome and terrible at the same time.
And yeah, anime is marketed to kids. In fact, the reason Mobile Suit Gundam came into existence was just so toys could be sold to the kiddies. It ended up revolutionizing anime, but that was more of an accident than anything else.

Japanese people have special taste of anime compare to your average anime fan and there do love Disney animations since most anime fans hate Disney. I've lived in Japan for all of the 14 years of my life before moving so I hope you don't mind if I try to answer your question. When I was a little kid and still in the early teenage years I mostly watched tv tokyo and anime was on every night from 6pm to 8pm after that the other anime were shown in the morning starting at 6am ending around 10am. Unless that exchange student had cable that was all of the anime I ever got unless I wanted to stay up to 11 at night to watch Mermaid Forest. So it really isn't at all mainstream. I mean, it was easier to get Disney shows there than it was to get anime. They even had Jackie Chan adventures there. Being called an otaku though is very embarassing over there because if you are one...well...lets just say that a 3rd grader has more respect from adults than you. Manga is also more popular though cause along with knowing everything before the anime and having things explained more reading is a very popular pastime.

I mean, when Inuyasha was dubbed, there were more funny lines.

Most anime seiyuu are mostly average and not even dam popular what the average otaku they say, it is just elitism propganda. Hell, even the Japanese otaku animations fans hardly worship this people.
Well, right now most dubs are average quality. Some say Duel Masters is better dub then the Japanese version probaly have to do with rapid change of voice acting. I sure love the .Hack/SIGN dub especially Sora funny dialogue that made the series more fun to hear. Rurouni Kenshin could have been a better dub if it wasn't for the main cast except for Kenshin sound so monotone.
Something bothers me, Why are people never complain about the American Animation voice acting, I heard more bad voice actors then dubs.

They're American, not Otakus? I guess that would be a REASONABLE answer?
Mew...I think this should get stickied. This is awesome and clears some answers some questions anime haters have.

Anime is mainstream in Japan. You can go on about how its still a subculture nerd thing in japan, but it doesnt change the fact that 3 of the 4 top grossing movies in Japan are by Miyazaki.

Zilartwarrior, your post (the beginning one) was awesome. I like dubs (not all), and I hate it whan people say that the actors suck. I"m planning on becoming a voice actor (for anime mostly), and it does hurt when they say that. I beleive it's not the actors acting abilities that make a dub bad, but the fact that so much has to be cut from an anime. And also if the dubbing company chooses the wrong actor (I feel this is true for Naruto) for a character. I hope this makes sense...
