The old ones were soooooo much better.
There were aliens in this one. ALIENS. That's all I have to say. Worth seeing it once in theaters, but I don't think I'm likely to watch it again.

Aliens aren't that bad, and it fits with the theme of the series just fine. Tintin had aliens, and Tintin inspired Indiana Jones.

Good action, good moments, especially the fight in the malt shop, and Shia Labeouf and Harrison Ford had good chemistry, but...
...it was so weird...
Gods, demons, I woulda been ok, but c'mon, aliens???

*Dusts off Film Theory Hat and puts it on*
Any film affiliated with George Lucas is heavily based in genre theory, namely the "Saturday Morning Serial." Way back when, matinées would run up to 5 subjects any given Saturday. There would usually be a newsreel, a cartoon, a part of an ongoing series, an A-movie, and a B-movie. Indiana Jones and Star Wars owe their very existence to these series or "serials." Examples of these serials include Flash Gordon and The Lone Ranger.
The age of the serial is generally considered to be the 1930s, which the first three Indiana Jones films take place. Now that Indy is 19 years older, they are now in the realm of the 1950s B-movie, where giant-sized monsters and spacemen reigned supreme. Also there was a lot of Red Fever, so Russians, or their common cinematic analogues "invading spacemen," were common enemies. Also, in case you didn't notice, people talked. A lot. Perfectly in-tune with 1950s B-movies.
I guess the point I'm trying to make is: It's a 1950's B-movie at heart![/b] That's the style. Deal with it. God might have been en vogue in the 1930s, but the Wonders of the Atom created a huge trove of possibilities.
Anyway, it's better than Temple of Doom. I'm happy.

Oh, you did not just say it was better than Temple of Doom, that was a classic!
ripped the dude's heart out, for crying out loud.
Wow, would've never got that connection to a 50's B movie, now I'm starting to think the movie was pretty clever.

Don't get me wrong Temple of Doom is a fun movie, but it's severely lacking in plot. Even Spielberg said it was basically all the things they wished they could have done on Raiders but didn't have the time. And then there's Short Round. *shudder* If I hear "O-kay, Doctah Johnes," one more time, it'll be too soon.

o8jedi: Good point about the whole B-Movie thing, but you might be over thinking it a little. It think the nuclear test thing and all were hearkening back to the fifties suspicions, but so much as you suggest. The film itself was awesome, but the end dragged the film down from four star territory down to a three. I mean, what was that?

The ending was definitely lacking, I'll admit. I would have preferred more closure, namely having the FBI or other government entity (that may or may not legally exist) debrief them about what just happened. Wedding, okay. Hat blown to Mutt's feet, eh, even if it was only to set up the "Not yet, Junior" grab as Indy walks out.
But I have no problem with aliens being in Indy. It's been pretty real-world based so far and aliens could conceivably exist ergo it's not out of the realm of possibility. Besides, you have to suspend disbelief anyway since Indy always happens upon the real deal.
