This reminds me of a little story my Youth Minister once told me (and I kind of like this story).
---
Once there was an old lady who lived alone in her house. It was raining that day and every broadcasting system announced a flood warning and that her area was to be evacuated.
A car drove by her house a young woman offered to drive the old lady to safety. The old lady responded, "No thank you. I have faith in God, he will protect me."
The roads were starting to flood so the woman drove off. Eventually the flood came and the water level was a story high. A man in a boat came by and saw the old lady at her second story window. He offered her a ride to safety. "The old lady responded, "No thank you. I have faith in God, he will protect me."
And as the rapids became worse, the man took off. The water level continued to rise, forcing the lady to climb up her roof. Eventually a helicopter flew by and spotted the old lady. They hovered over to her and threw down a rope ladder. A man shouted for her to climb up but the old lady responded, "No thank you. I have faith in God, he will protect me."
The winds became very strong and the helicopter was forced to fly off.
And so, the water level continued to rise. The currents washed over the roof, capturing the old lady into the fearsome rapids took her under. So then the old lady drowned.
So the old lady gets to heaven and walks up to God. She asks God, "So, why didn't you come to rescue me, God?"
God responded, "Well, I tried to rescue you three times but you turned down every offer."

Moral to the story, (from my viewpoint) God may work in mysterious ways, but he often works in "not-so-mysterious" ways.
