Oddly, Katara is one of those characters I don't really find appealing in and of themselves. It's her interactions with other characters that give me reasons to like her - and there are certain characters I find provide the most interesting counter to her personality. Toph is one of them - she brings out all the bad things in Katara without even seeming to try - and in a fashion that is far more immediate and interesting than just about anyone else Katara has been at odds with, including her brother.
For me, Katara's interactions with Zuko don't provide anything particularly interesting about her character to latch onto. He makes her angry - but if I wanted to see her angry, I'd rather see it with Toph. For general irritation/annoyance on her part, she has Sokka (with the benefit of still being caring siblings after they're dong bickering). Zuko doesn't do anything for Katara that I haven't seen other characters do better.
Which brings me to Aang. Aang does something to Katara's character that is absolutely amazing. He brings out the joy and wonder in her that seems so often on the verge of being overwhelmed and buried by the immenseness and danger of this situation they've gotten into. Katara looks to Aang and draws strength and hope from him - and whenever I see the way he makes her smile, even if it's not in a romantic sense at all, I find the beauty in her personality and I start to really love her as a character.

I'm twenty-one, female, and I support Kataang. I don't full-out 'ship the couple, though my Forum Sister is slowly but surely nudging me in the right direction.
What I've come to enjoy about Kataang is the mutuality of the relationship. These two particular characters bring out the best in each other. If not for Aang, Katara never would've realized her potential as a Waterbender. If not for Katara, Aang would, to this day, be trapped in an iceberg with no way out. Reaching further, Katara is more than Aang's Waterbending Master: she's also the source of emotional support and stability in his life. Whenever he questions himself, she's at his side to encourage him and remind him of his greatest virtues. Also, they consistently give to each other without ever asking for anything in return. Just being in each other's company, sharing thoughts and feelings, is enough.
Katara views Aang as Aang, not simply "the Avatar". Observed among other cultures -- primarily towns within the Earth Kingdom -- is the tendency to view Aang as a quasi-human "force": an emotionless being of pure strength and action that lacks any true semblance of humanity. In Avatar Day, one person went as far as to remark, "It's going to kill us with its awesome Avatar powers!"... Aang isn't an "it"; he's a human being and should be treated as such. Not once has Katara viewed Aang as anything but human, and this component is critically important to his psyche.
I don't actively 'ship or support anything else -- other than my growing fondness for this couple, I remain something of a non-'shipper, though I see potential in other 'ships and am open to exploration ( Maiko and Zujin ). I will mention my total disdain of pairing Azula with male characters.

I'm fourteen and a girl, I will be fifteen this summer.
I ship Kataang because I am very emotional, and I am touched by the love Katara and Aang have for one another, and I don't want to stray from it. I'm also a big supporter of the avatar creators, and, since as of now Kataang is canon, I find other ships against the avatar creators. My personal opinion.
And I also find that Katara and Zuko's desires to kill each other doesn't exactly classify as "love." I mean, she offered to heal his scar out of compassion, not love. She just was surprised that Zuko lost his mother in the war just like she had. But when Aang came to rescue her, she ran right away from Zuko to hug Aang. Katara's actions towards Zuko were similar to how she treated Jet, and she didn't like him after episode 10.

Male, 19 years old.
I ship Kataang because:
1. It's got the most obvious canon evidence. For me, there is no point in emotional investment into something that'll most likely not happen (i.e. Zutara...no offense).
2. There is already some attraction between the two, even if it's extremely one-sided at the moment. If Kataang doesn't work out, then Aang will be devastated, and I don't like that.
3. Their relationship is just...well, beautiful, I guess. They obvious care for each other immensely, romantically or not, and either of them would sacrifice themselves for another. They trust in each other, they treat other as equals, and they learn off of each other. This sort of deep, emotional bond is really appealing to me.

Am I the only Kataang who doesn't like Tokka? Probably. Not because of the "keep her away from Sokka so Azula can have him reason", but because those two together always aggravates me for some reason. >< Anyway, all my reasons for liking Kataang have been said. Zutara is waaay too boring for my tastes. Oddly enough, I compare Zuko to Will Turner and Katara to Elizabeth Swann. Apparently they are Made To Be, but I beg to differ. Will is utterly dull and stupid and Elizabeth is often too fiesty and headstrong for her own good. I always think that neither really know, ya know? At least not the way Jack seems to understand her, in that uncanny way, and vice versa. <---ships Jack and Elizabeth. *cough*

NO. NO YOU'RE NOT DAYDREAM. I'm a rabid Kataanger, but I don't like Tokka either. (And it's nothing to do with Sokkla either xD), but it's just the fact that Toph is too young for him, and Sokka has too many other love interests, and TOPH is not one of them. Plus...I don't find them that interesting together.
I love one-sided Tokka (Toph having a little schoolgirl crush on him) but I doubt he will ever return those feelings.
As for Kataang...Well just refer to Growlys post up there ^. It was beautiful and perfect.

But that's a matter of opinion. I'm 16, female and ship Kataang. Because it has the most canon evidence by far. Because Aang love Katara and vice versa. Because it's simply beautiful. Because they are complements of each other. It's not because I think they look pretty together. Because I've never been wrong before (except that one time which doesn't count because it defies logic, clearly).

i'm 15, and i have shipped kataang since the premiere of the first episode & still ship kataang because ... when they looked at eachother i knew that they had an unseparitable (sp?) bond between them. i could just tell it..... u could call it a girl's intuition or whatever... but the love is definitely there.. eventhough it is sort of one-sided right now i believe the love aang has for katara will blossom into a relationship that is beautiful.

Hmm, I'm 16, Female, and I sort of ship Kataang. I really shouldn't be anywhere near shipping boards as I'm not really a shipper. I support about every ship there is many of them crack and conflicting. However, I do love the idea of Kataang, I'm just not sure how it would work out in reality (or I guess the show since it isn't technically reality).
I think Katara and Aang are great together for all of those happy reasons stated by the others here. I feel that they can't just get together though. I could see them having a long term relationship in the future, but not as a couple right now like Sokka and Yue/Suki. They have a really awkward age difference. Yes, two years isn't a big gap really. However, when you are younger those gaps are much bigger. Imagine them in today's setting. It would be like a freshman in high school dating a seventh grader. The maturity difference is very real. I'd much rather prefer it if Katara and Aang got some more romantic experience before they started dating. Katara hasn't really had a real relationship, I mean she didn't ever actually kiss Jet did she? And that ended, well, lousy. And Aang has only had his crush on Katara and Meng's crush on him as far as relationships go. I see Zutara as a fun short term relationships. I can see Katara dating Zuko for a while with the whole bad boy thing, but it not working out, for obvious reasons that people above have said. Once Aang and Katara have matured, I can see that bond they have (one that I think of as more friendly mother/son love) coming back as a more romantic bond. And I absolutely love that idea of Kataang. After all, it IS a cliche to fall hopelessly in love with your first crush and never seperate.
But that's just my opinion on it. As for other major ships I support I like Zutara (short term), Maiko (short term), Sukka (long term as long as they don't settle down for a while), and Sokkai (SokkaxMai; long term). I support Tokka as a one sided crush. The ships I don't support are Taang (Aang is too soft for Toph), Soko (don't get me started), Sokkla or Sozula (I really can't see Azula in a healthy relationship with anyone ((except Suki, Azuki Pride!)) *cough*), and Jinko (although I love Jin and they had a cute date).

An opinion I agree with. Ardently.
It's funny because I'd actually been making quite a few Zuko/Katara shipper to Jack/Elizabeth shipper comparisons in my LJ recently.
But, uhm, on topic.
I'm 23, female, and I support Aang/Katara because it's epic, adorable, and there. He has to save the world and she has to save him. Good times.

@gotter & Sunshine:
I compare Will/Liz to Zutara because I compare Aang to Jack, in a sense. Similar to Jack and his relationships with women, Aang shouldn't have any earthly attachments. Aang is supposed to be a free man (like Jack already is); sure, he can love and be loved, but it shouldn't ever be his first priority.
Get it?

Not...really? As I feel that you need to stretch quite a bit to get to Jack = Aang, in any way at all ever. Jack isn't free because he has no earthly attachments. Jack does, I feel, clearly care about Will and Elizabeth as much as he is capable of caring about anyone. The reason he is free, however, is because he's selfish. The only person he truly loves is himself. There are few similiarities to be found between him and noble, purehearted, generally selfless, classically heroic Aang.
And, honestly, the real sticking point is that there is zero resemblence at all between Will/Elizabeth and Zuko/Katara. Will/Elizabeth is like epic true love at first sight since childhood I'll-Do-Anything-For-You kinda thing. Indeed, their first meeting can be seen as a very good parallel to Aang and Katara's what with the waking up and her being the first thing he sees. Then there's her line: "I'm watching over you, Will." and the way she smooths his hair when he's still unconcious. Very evokative to me of the kind of protectoress relationship that Katara has with Aang.

Just putting things out there. No need to get are huffy about it, really. >.> Except I must be the only one who doesn't think Will/Liz is epic. It bores me to tears. -.- No matter if it is true love or whatever. It just makes me yawn. That's probably a double standard, seeing as I ship Kataang, but who cares?

I don't ship Zutara, but I agree with daydream. I guess it's the Zutara in me, but I always like the contrast between Elizabeth and Jack best.

I'm 17 year old boy and I ship Kataang b/c Aang and Katara to me are perfect for each other. And there has been signs and notions that they will eventually get together and re-populate the Air Nomads. I'm not trying to bash, but the Zutara argument against Kataang is so weak to me that it makes Zutara that much less desirable.
