discussion time comrades! If Aang lets go of his feelings for Katara, would this provide any real benefit to him?

discussion time comrades! If Aang lets go of his feelings for Katara, would this provide any real benefit to him? He'd be able to focus more on controlling the avatar state....but is it worth loosing the one you love? To which, the Guru might answer, "What is worse? Loosing the one you love or loosing thousands of people?"

That reminds of this show I saw in the Twilight Zone Would you kill one baby if it meant saving the world?
Even thopugh Guru Patik maybe telling Aang to stop pursuin after Katara, it doesn't mean stop being her friend. He didn't tell Aang to le go of Appa, or Sokka or Toph.

When you say "let go of his feelings for Katara" you mean not love her anymore?
If you do then I don't think it would be to his benefit because the happiness that he feels for her will be gone and that would really lower his support and strength. Katara will just be that "BFF" that he knows will care for him but not as much if he did still love her (which I believe that she knows that he has at least a crush on her). That would motivate her to support him more.
Ya that's all I could think off. Sorry if it's bad, I'm not that really good at discussions.

Aang's only gone into the Avatar state once because of Katara. The other times it was because of Appa and Gyatso. My feeling is that Aang has to let go of all attachments that would cause him to potentially react like he's done. The problem with that is that I just don't see that being part of Aang's personality.

Now another question? Now if Aang disconnects himself from all emotional attachments, and is able to summon his avatar state at will when needed, would it make him any less dangerous?

Well if he's able to control the Avatar state it makes him less dangerous to his allies and more dangerous to his enemies because he would know what he is doing. When Aang gets too emotional he loses control of himself and isn't aware of what or who he is attacking and is then weakened greatly after he uses it.

perhaps he must suppress his feelings for Katara until all is said and done, the war is over, and he doesnt really need the power of the Avatar Spirit

I think Gyatso realized the most important thing about Aang:
When the monks were deciding what to do about Aang, Gyatso argued that he needed to be normal and to grow up a normal (or at least as normal as one can get being an airbending prodigy) boy. He said that he wanted what was best for Aang to which the head monk said that what they needed was what was best for the world and decided to separate Gyatso and Aang. Aang was devastated and the rest is history.
Which leads me to ask the question:
Which is better for the world - a happy, well-adjusted Avatar or a miserable, bitter Avatar?
It's pretty clear to me that Gyatso knew that Aang was not going to thrive without love and support. That scene for me has always spoken volumes about the world and its view of the Avatar. Whatever is best for the world no matter the cost to the actual person housing the Avatar spirit. Now wouldn't the world want that all powerful being to be happy and mentally fit to perform his/her duties. It seemed that only Gyatso cared for Aang the Person. Much like Katara.

You know something I just think that Aang has to let go of whatever inside is holding him back, holding things in and letting it consume you is not the way to go. Letting them out or letting it go can put his mind at ease.

very good point Amira. I think Gyatso knows that the Avatar's job is hard enough, without adding on to a difficult childhood. Pity we never see Gyatso continue to fight for Aang, because Aang runs away
