I don't want Toph to die either. I think she's awesome. Just pointing out the possibilities.
cami, you have a good point though. I've never been able to quite work out in my own head whether I think that the other stipulations of the swamp applied to Aang's vision or if it really was just all about giving him a glimpse into the future.

I see Aang and Toph more as partners in crime than as boyfriend/girlfriend...but hey, anything could happen.

Partners in crime -- I'm having visions of them destroying every town in their path as Aang learns earthbending.. j/k -- I'm kind of leaning that way as well (for now) -- Toph said it herself, she's never had a real friend...

I like the idea of Tophang.
Reasons: 1. She is cool! (lol ok, more opinion than reason, but still...) 2. She, being Earth, would be the compliment to Aang's Air. They would be Yin and Yang, element-wise. 3. They would have a feisty relationship if their interaction during "The Blind Bandit" is to be any indication. That makes for an attractive ship in my opinion. 4. While they would be feisty, they can also come to an understanding with each other. This is also shown by their interaction in "The Blind Bandit". 5. Toph and Aang are the same age. I doubt this was done by accident. I mean, for her to be 12 and enough of a master to teach the Avatar? She is an absolute earthbending prodigy. The creators didn't have to do this. They could have made a 39 yr old man to teach Aang. It would have been more conceivable for someone older to have the necessary skills. But they chose to make a girl his own age. There must be a reason for it. 6. She was the girl in Aang's swamp vision. I for one believe that the rule of seeing a loved one you have lost in the swamp still applied to Aang. He was just seeing her in the future instead. See below for a bit more detail.
On Toph's purpose in Aang's vision. It is true that the rules always seem different for Aang and that he was not experiencing the same kind of vision as Sokka and Katara were. But it wasn't stated that Aang wasn't seeing someone he would love and lose either. The only confirmed weird thing about his vision was that he was seeing the future and not the past.
So, allowing for this, if Toph really *is* supposed to be someone that Aang will love and lose, who says it has to mean that she dies? I think it could be a slight indication that *he* may die in the end of the series. This once again brings up the whole idea of him needing to sacrifice himself to save the world. That could be how they would lose each other.

Well it's not about them losing each other. It's about him losing her. Which...yeah, you're stretching to say that he will be experiencing loss if HE'S the one who dies. Also, what is with the assumption that it MUST be romantic love they're talking about? No, seriously. Katara saw her mother. Even if the "love and lose" rule does apply to Aang's vision of Toph it still doesn't necessitate them ever being anything more than good friends.
Actually, I never expected them to have the group ever actually travelling on a permanent basis with an adult. Just because in our day and age an adult running around with a bunch of kids to whom they're not related would invite unsavory comment.

it makes sense they are both 12, and who says the teacher had to go with them bumi wouldnt have nick obviously did this for a reason, i bet at first they were thinking of an arrangement more like pakku. but they realize they could get the shipping wars really bustling if they did this.

Even if the "love and lose" rule does apply to Aang's vision of Toph it still doesn't necessitate them ever being anything more than good friends. Actually, when the members of the Aang gang saw their visions in the swamp, both Katara and Sokka weren't seeing visions of their past. Katara was the only one who did when she saw her mother. Sokka was seeing the vision of the present becuase he even mentioned "I think of Yue all the Time" meaning although she died in the past she's still in his present. Aang was definately shown a vision of his future and his future involves Toph. Although we don't know if it's going to be romantic, Katara saw someone whom she loved as family and Sokka saw someone he loved in a romantic sense. Since Toph is of course no family member of the Avatar, he could develop feelings for her in the far future when their traveling together... I thought the rivalry was a clear demonstration of Yin/Yang at work. Their both natural "polar opposites" as you can see Aang's head is in the clouds most of the time and Toph's feet are very down to earth. Their rivals but without one there can't be the other and Toph demonstrated that when she went back against her fathers wishes to rescue Aang. Actually, I never expected them to have the group ever actually travelling on a permanent basis with an adult. Just because in our day and age an adult running around with a bunch of kids to whom they're not related would invite unsavory comment. Bumi was intended to be Aang's teacher all along. Bumi being the wise fool would have gone with Aang on his travels but his duties as King of Omashu probably would have made him stay and if he would've stayed then Aang would have had to stay as well. Of course since unexpected 'conquer' happened Aang had to find another teacher and he found it in a person who had mastered Nuetral Jing-Toph. Aunt Wu said that just like the clouds he can also shape his own destiny and I think he did just that by finding the teacher in Toph and not Bumi^^!

Meh....I'm more of a fan of the Ty Lee X Aang pairing myself. Although I can see Tophaang being canon, I have to agree that they seem more like "partners in crime". Still, no matter if Ty Lee or Toph comes out on top, it would add new basis to the Yin/Yang theory.
Grargh....why must the Avatar writers keep us in so much suspense? Then again, I suppose that's part of what makes the show so great. ^_^

Could not be a cutier couple. I mean think about it. They make perfect sense. They are both 12, both powerful benders, and they are both CUTE!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Oh I hope the writers are paying attention to this forum. If they are, ok guys here's what needs to happen...
1. Aang and Toph need to hook up. 2. ZUTARA NEEDS TO HAPPEN 3. Please, oh please find a girl for Sokka (one that does not die or go off to war would be great ;D).
