So you're speculating on a "Wow, you are hot" moment^^. Yeah, pretty much. ;D ^^ I'm hoping on the same to happen for Zutara, after he gives up capturing Aang and stops to see Katara as an obstacle. Good luck to you.^^

So how you Maiko guys are doing? Zuko is in BSS, Mai can't enter it and Zuko has a date AND is in the same city as the gAang. Any theories on Maiko at this point. (no bashing, I'm just wondering) Not worried. Mai is Zuko's sole canonical romantic link. The creators will have to discuss that. Zuko's date is a problem of all Zuko ships. But I can imagine her being used as a plot device used to contrast his feelings for another girl. Shock? She knows, who she is chasing, doesn't she? Or do you think she will be shocked by the way he looks? She didn't want to get dirt in SotFN, I guess the peasant Zuko won't be as sexy as the Prince Zuko to her, but if so it would be the death of the shipp Maiko. Mai may be a highborn lady, but she finds courtly life boring. Plot-wise, there's no reason to kill the ship in the manner you are suggesting for this is Zuko's only ship. I meant shock on Zuko's end... I mean, he hasn't seen Mai since before he was banished, he probably doesn't know what she looks like now, how she's changed.... I can't imagine Mai being that shocked to see Zuko, for some odd reason. I think Mai is so jaded shock comes rarely to her. But then if it's Zuko, she might get shocked. She seems to show a lot more emotion when it comes to him. That's a pretty sound idea, actually. Asexual Zuko suddenly proves that yes, he has gone through puberty. Show him so unaffected by his date, and then BAM--contrast it with how he reacts towards this certain girl from his past.

I always thought that if Zuko was going to hook up with anyone, it would be someone from his past that could understand him and know what he was like before the Agni Kai and before he was banished... which is another reason why I feel Maiko would work, because technically he grew up with Mai.

Do you remember in SotFN, when she did want to be dirty? I know it's a really wacky idea of her being disgusted by him being a "commoner" and her shallow, but we did see so few scenes with Mai in it AND actually talking, that I wanted to use everything she said, which could cause a problem to the shipp itself. But yes I see your point in her being the only female, who atleast showed difrent feelings, then mercy or fear.^^

I don't blame her for being disgusted. I got chills just looking down that hole. >_<
'Course, that might have more to do with the fact that I'm claustraphobic....

I wouldn't mind to see Maiko and Zutara to happen alongside (lol, many phantasies at work here). Mostly, because a rematch would be pretty sweet. It's impressive, that Mai can hold her own against Katara without being a bender.

Mai's probably been training for years. She's a skilled fighter, I just wonder why she chose to study that paticular art of fighting.

Perhaps, something that interests her?
I also read in a fanfic that Zuko taught her how to use a knife, it was cute. :3 Maybe that's why too?

Maybe she saw Zuko playing with his knife and decided to start training with knives amd other weapons to ultimetly earn his attention and impress him. [/fantasising] Or her parents may have something to do it. Maybe her mom or her dad got her into it. Hopefully we'll find out. And I like Maiko because of the Chibi! fluff too. Its very intresting when you think about it. How it will play out. And Millie posted something on my Avatar ships forum that made me realize that this pairing is the best thing that happened to the ship war. Every shipping board needs a "Why I Ship [insert ship here] Thread". Everyone has their reasons for shipping a certain ship . Let me start.
I ship Maiko because Mai is the one and only character who has shown romantic interest in Zuko.
I enjoy shipping for the predictive factor of it. Objectively reading into canon and hypothesizing is a FUN.
While I do fanon ship, I lean towards canon more. My heart tends to go out more to things that are grounded in truth.
And when you have a canon romantic interest in one party, you're already halfway there. [You're 'there' when the other party reciprocates!]
Especially because Maiko is childhood love, it gets 'pure' and 'true' points.
Mai is the only character who has shown a romantic interest in Zuko, therefore canonically Maiko >>> any other Zuko ship.
I ship Maiko because Maiko is childhood love.
And as I have said, childhood love is pure and true.
That's not always the case in real life, but this is fiction. And in fiction [repeat with me]: things always have to make sense. In fiction, childhood loves are pure and true.
I ship Maiko because their personalities fit better together than with anyone else's.
I'd explain but it would be far too long. But if anyone does want to hear why, I'll surely indulge you.
I ship Maiko because Zuko does not need 'healing' from any girl, and Mai will be just the girl to allow him to solve his own issues--as should be done.
I'm sick of all the 'so-and-so-character will heal Zuko' nonsense. Zuko can solve his own problems--and he should. It would be so cheap if all it took to turn Zuko's life around is a nurturing little girlfriend. NO. Zuko will earn his happy ending by working for it.
Mai is the perfect girl to allow him to do that. She'll just be there for him and not meddle in his affairs. She wouldn't feel the need to verbally communicate with him all the time--they'll have moments of comfortable silence. She wouldn't attempt to quell his rage [that my friends would be controlling him], instead she would let him rage, not go all comforting or scolding or be scared, but let him express all those things he tries to repress. And she would let him pursue his destiny.
I ship Maiko because Mai is the only character suitable to become Fire Lady.
Zuko's destiny is to become the Fire Lord, yo!
Mai's Nick profile says: The daughter of Omashu's reigning Fire Nation governor, Mai is a depressed-looking goth teen, seemingly bored with everything. Mai is fifteen, and one of Azula's best friends since they were kids. Like Azula, Mai grew up as royalty in the Fire Nation and attended the Royal Fire Academy for girls. Mai is not a Firebender, but she is an awesome warrior.
It's interesting that she was equated to Azula, the well-respected princess. I'd say, she's canonically 'good enough' to marry a future Fire Lord.
Interestingly enough, 'grew up as royalty in the Fire Nation' sounds a lot like 'born to Fire Nation royalty and was raised as such'--the latter being Ursa, who is later said to be 'the perfect match for Prince Ozai', who of course later becomes Fire Lord.
I ship Maiko because of Mai.
I love Mai. Period. People tend to ship the characters they love because they want developments in the characters and happy endings for them.
Maiko lets me ship Mai, hoping for developments in her character and a happy ending for her while still keeping it in character for both characters.
I ship Maiko because I grew to love Zuko because of Maiko.
I have a strong dislike for angsty, privileged, good-looking teenage boys. But I forgive them when they 'reform'. [And Zuko's in his 'reforming' period.]
And I grow to love them when they can be canonically shipped with an awesome female character--especially when said female character is really romantically interested. Think transitivity: Mai is awesome, she likes Zuko, therefore there must be something awesome about Zuko.
I ship Maiko because of Azula.
Maiko is all the more interesting because of Azula. Azula is both the bridge and the barrier between Zuko and Mai. I am interested in how that will play out.I love you Millie.

I always thought that if Zuko was going to hook up with anyone, it would be someone from his past that could understand him and know what he was like before the Agni Kai and before he was banished... which is another reason why I feel Maiko would work, because technically he grew up with Mai. Word. Before Mai appeared, I nearly wrote a ZukoOC fic, and she was a childhood acquaintance. I can't see Zuko with a girl who isn't from the Fire Nation [given his ideals] and I can't see him with a girl who isn't one he had known before his disillusionment [given his personality]. I'm glad Mai appeared before I could sink into that quagmire. OCs paired with a main character give me allergies. I haven't ment it this way. But yes I see your point in her being the only female, who atleast showed difrent feelings, then mercy or fear.^^ Exactly. You did mean it that way. And what I'm saying is that there's no reason to kill the ship in a manner that would suggest Mai is shallow. Unless the plot twist is that Zuko loves her after all and her change of heart will be one more angst burden to him. But I see no point in using such a plot twist. One, Mai hasn't been presented as shallow. Two, it's Zuko's 'getting-myself-together period', to have him rejected by a beloved will be a step back for him. If that scene establishes anything, it's that Mai has limits on how much she is willing to follow Azula. She will follow Azula, but only to a certain extent, and she would not go beyond that even at the risk of harm. Which foreshadows something very good for Maiko: Mai isn't going to follow Azula to the ends of the earth, and when she decides that she doesn't want to follow Azula anymore, she won't, as simple as that. So much for being so very willing to follow Azula's deeds [Indeed, a take-that for Mai bashers.] She's not the only female, she's the only character. There has been no male character who has been shown interested in Zuko. I know I'm gonna be instantflamed for this, but this whole "hidden weapons" fighting is a very sly way to fight and makes her look like a villian. No, it doesn't, even a passing survey of Oriental literature will prove that statement very wrong. Many Oriental female characters who fight with hidden weapons are presented in a positive light, the most available example to the Westerns right now would be Tenten from Naruto. Ninja automatically means 'stealthy', but most definitely not 'swarthy'. Especially considering how the ninja is idealized in Oriental culture. A kunoichi is even more idealized because she represents not just high skill but also beauty and femininity. Zuko himself, as Blue Spirit, is based on the ninja archetype. It is notable that Blue Spirit is the first instance that Zuko has helped Aang, and the first time that it was foreshadowed that Zuko would be Aang's ally. EDIT: I love you too, Gigi.

Of course, because of Mais lack of characterization, most of it is pure speculation. But I'm a Zutara shipper, so I respect and understand it. I'm interested myself how it will turn out with the two of them. Meeting her will certainly trigger some emotions about the live on the royal court and his childhood for sure and I'm interested, if her "affection" will prove strong enough to actually fight against Azula. Bye guys I'm out. Maiko sounds like fun, but I stay Zutara nevertheless.^^
