Yeah, I can see how stupid fans can make you hate a character. It's happened to me a couple of times in other fandoms.

Zuko's not the reason I watch Avatar, but I do like what he bring to the show, a character who's morals conflict with what his family expect of him. That's enough to make anyone want to scream at a thunder storm.
I watch the show because of the Gaang, Aang keeps taking it on the chin and manages to keep moving forward, not to mention have fun and still be who he is.
Certain people in the fandom expect him to be perfect, while Zuko is just confused and conflicted. Serious double standard. Then Aang has a reason to fight to save the world, and said fans seem to think that isn't good enough, and that he should do it because he's the Avatar, and nothing else.
I'm starting to veer way off subject, but yeah, Zuko's story is good, but Aang's is what keeps me coming back.

I so do not watch the show for Zuko, far far from it. I basically agree with everything Amira has said so far. But I just to add something, I think its a bit stupid to generalize a whole fandom.

Zuko stole the show?
So that's why season three hasn't started yet! Zuko's stolen it!

Yeah if you (Zuko) don't give it back.....we'll put some serious hurt on you! Here's your karma, Luthien for last night.

You guys are amazing. Zuko stoling season 3 *dies laughing*
Okay, seriously.
I actually agree with all of you. Zuko's not the main reason I watch Avatar. I watch it because the whole idea behing it. I've always liked stories about people bending/controling the basic elements of the nature, but that's another story.
Why I love Zuko? Because he's troubled!! Zuko is a very interesting character that shows two sides -the "I-want-to-restore-my-honor" one, and the troubled one. And, in my opinion, Zuko's a character that you can see in most of your normal life -you know, the kid in school that has lots of troubles with his family- and that makes lots of fans identify with.

I agree with Amira about the double standard thing. Say one negative thing about Zuko or Iroh and it's the end of world. But i's ok for people to call Azula b**ches and ok to call Mai and Ty Lee degrading as well. Are you kidding me? Were you on DH the day after the Season 2 Finale? Zuko got slaughtered on the forums. Almost everybody trash talked Zuko, including people that claimed to be his biggest fan a day earlier. Oh well, it separated the true fans from the wannabes, I suppose. @amira Wow, that blows. Never let anyone mess with your art. That's something personal. It's one thing to critique art, but it's just plain rude to bash you based on what you draw. Whoever emailed you must have been under the impression that artists are slaves that just take requests.

Well in a lot of animes people watch the show solely for the sexiness of the evil villain xD
But in avatar the plot is more interesting than a single character. Every character matters. The only difference is Zuko has more to him than we thought at first.

I think there's trolls on both sides. Just ignore them. The worst mistake is to mix them up with the people who actually have something rational and reasonable to say.
@demon-- Thanks, at least I know one person finds me funny ;p
Anyway, on the subject of Zuko...mixed in among all of my jabbering on was a point somewhere, which is: Zuko's not the protagonist.
As such, I think his character has more room, which leads to him being who he is. I don't think he would quite fit as a protagonist without a few minor adjustments.
Mainly, he needs to lighten up. Ease up on the grumpiness and sulleness at tad. If he was the main character, we would be treated to much more air time from him, and eventually most people would just get tired of it if he acted like that.
Since Zuko Alone, he's gotten much better, though he has been prone to occasional bouts of pouting and glowering since, but nothing overboard.
So if you got past these, he could potentially be a heroic character, albeit still a rather dark one.
I read the first couple segments of Nandireya's fic (which is a marvel for me...I don't read fan-fiction. First and last one I did), and I thought she did a good job at shifting him into the role of the portagonist. Exagurrated the noble features of him that are evident in the show, while carrying on with the non-grouchiness that he seemed to have assimilated during the latter season.
Yet, all the same, I think Aang makes a better hero. Why? He has the key traits already clearly evident. Most heroes start with little more than their strength of heart. Compassion, empathy, bravery, etc. Pretty much by-the-books heroics. Why? Because those are good traits, generally.
Aang had these from the beginning, and they're probably what he has most of, so that works. Zuko has them too...but they're buried deep down by his obsession. Zuko's obsession is, in essence, what really does prevent him from being a hero. It has time and again. In Zuko Alone, we see him in a scenario completely apart from his quest to return home; he's just traveling. And it is then that he really shows a heroic side.
And yet, when his obsession smacks him right in the face, like CoD, it's all over. It's the bane of his existence. He won't be a hero until it's gone (like in Nan's thingy).

Here's a little food for thought everyone.
If Zuko had Iroh's bodytype(chubby, undefined stomach and chest) but still had the same personality, can you honestly say he'd have as many fans as he does?
