In a way the person who she cares about the most in the Aang gang is well...Aang! Remember she gave up everything she had and her own home to teach Aang Earthbending, who was also nothing but a stranger to her when they first met. Honestly, when you think about it deep inside would you run away from home for somebody you don't even know? Something must have made her do it and I don't think it was for the fact of saving the world and it being the duty to the Avatar to learn Earthbending:>/ since she clearly said it "wasn't her problem" when they told her that. Deep down in that hardcore spirit she has I think she really cares about Aang...her *twinkle toes* of course someone's whose like rock is not going to admit it or even display in the open I loved her teachings! She clearly taught him in her style and didn't give him any special treatment even though he's only a 12 year old boy and the AvatarXD And even though some people say that her taking his staff away was crossing the line, I thought it was in her exact nature to do it. From a distance, it seemed like she was bullying him but she was just teaching him a lesson; toughening him up in a way. My favorite Toph quote in this episode was: Aang: That's an antique. It was hand crafted by the Monks! It's a delicate instrument!Toph: yeah? Well it's not the only 'delicate instrument' around here...I was so loving Toph when she admitted that in the open!

But she didn't leave just to teach Aang earthbending. She left because her parents were stifling. They were going to impose further restrictions on her and they viewed her bending as something dangerous to her. She also went with them because unlike her parents, the Gaang was appreciated and a little awestruck by her abilities. They were the first ones who were. I think even if Aang didn't need a teacher she would have gone with them. I was one of those people who thought she had crossed the line. What if his staff had been damaged. It was in her nature to do it, as you said, and that is exactly why I don't think this pairing would ever be a good one. She doesn't seem to have any limits and I think honestly, if she hadn't endangered Sokka, Aang would have continued to doubt himself. And in terms of toughening him up, I think Aang's journey is doing a good job of that. I don't think he needs Toph's abrasiveness and verbal abuse to do that.

Yes she did also leave for those reasons^^. But in the chase she told Katara "That she gave away all she had in order to teach Aang Earthbending, making her unselfish." So even though she prob. felt suffocated and over-protected with her parents, it was still hard for her to give them up and leave her home prob. forever. The Aang gang was awestruck by her abilities but then again so were the all the viewers in Earth Rumble Six. Toph also felt like the members of the gang thought she was weak when she mentioned it to Iroh but then learned that they were only trying to help because they cared for her. Hmm...this reminds me a lot about the feud Sokka and the old man in Aunt Wu's village had. Sokka: You didn't have a safe journey! You were almost killed!Man: Ahh...But I wasn't!And I'm applying this to the staff discussion. The staff could have been damaged but in the end it wasn't. I think Toph wasn't planning to destroy because she already knew it was a delicate instrument. And since it was in her nature to use his staff against him in the first place, "nature knows when to stop" (Ep.17). Toph probably knew when enough was enough but since Aang never made to put up a fight up to the end, that meant he hadn't learned his lesson until the end. And in the end he was able to stand up to her, be unmoving both physically and mentally like a rock, and Earthbend. Lesson well learned^^ And in terms of toughening him up, I think Aang's journey is doing a good job of that. I don't think he needs Toph's abrasiveness and verbal abuse to do that. You see at first I thought that too but I don't think the journey was toughening him up at all now. I think it was simply maturing him in a way and there's a difference between being rock hide tough and wise and mature. Seeing the Earthbenders in the infirmary opened Aang's eyes to the numerous amount of people who are getting hurt by the minute while he was taking his time studying the elements and in a way just having fun-that made him more mature. Toph bullying him in a way and making him stand up and face his problems was toughening him up since before he met her he was really intimidated when someone brought him down, like in the case of the two Earthbending jerks who told him that is was "noneya buisnees." Toph's like a rock and when a rock hits you it hurts, so it's no wonder that her lessons were tough. Her words didn't seem abusive but more blunt like Jeong Jeong's and even Pakku's since they weren't the teachers who acted with positive reinforcement like Katara does. (yeah I'm really a die-hard Tophaang fan x.x is shot)

Eh, I can appreciate what you are saying. But I just really didn't like her in this past ep. I naturally just don't like people like that and I find their characters to be grating and obnoxious. She was just flat out nasty and cruel and you could just see the hurt, doubt, and shattered confidence in Aang. And remember that Katara is the one who gave him the pep talk about thinking differently and working with the opposite.
I don't think this is the last time Toph will act like that and I don't think this is the last time she will create conflict.
And she needs to lay off Sokka.

And she needs to lay off Sokka. Forget Toph laying off Sokka....the creators need to start giving him more credit. I'm really upset about how they've turned him into the comic relief of the show. ;_; He's worth more than that! But yes, Toph really is a big bully to Sokka. A 12-year-old beating on a 16-year-old...XD It's kind of funny (but not fair..definitely not fair >.<). I also come bearing...music! I've posted a couple of songs in other threads, and I've got a Tophaang song as well! It's the song "Sometimes You Can't Make It On Your Own" by U2. I love this song; the chorus gets to me every time <3. The moment I saw The Chase, I thought of this song and Toph’s ‘don’t need anyone but myself’ attitude. I see this as Aang's POV, since he would want to let her know that she doesn’t have to be alone. Plus the "Tough" at the beginning sounds an awful lot like "Toph." XD Download Link: www.sendspace.com/file/iyv4rpLyrics:Tough, you think you've got the stuff You're telling me and anyone You're hard enough
You don't have to put up a fight You don't have to always be right Let me take some of the punches For you tonight
Listen to me now I need to let you know You don't have to go it alone
And it's you when I look in the mirror And it's you when I don't pick up the phone Sometimes you can't make it on your own
We fight all the time You and I...that's alright We're the same soul I don't need...I don't need to hear you say That if we weren't so alike You'd like me a whole lot more*
Listen to me now I need to let you know You don't have to go it alone
And it's you when I look in the mirror And it's you when I don't pick up the phone Sometimes you can't make it on your own
I know that we don't talk I'm sick of it all Can - you - hear - me - when - I - Sing, you're the reason I sing You're the reason why the opera is in me...
Where are we now? I've still got to let you know A house still doesn't make a home Don't leave me here alone...
And it's you when I look in the mirror And it's you that makes it hard to let go Sometimes you can't make it on your own Sometimes you can't make it The best you can do is to fake it Sometimes you can't make it on your own~ * I read a lot of comments after The Blind Bandit saying that Aang and Toph were too alike to be anything but friends. Even though Bitter Work kind of disproved that, I still like the idea of them being similar.

After The Blind Bandit I was really excited about this one but now I think I was kind of jumping to conclusions. It would be cute though.

That song = x3 Yaay.
Anyway, this is my first time actually shipping something. >_> I usually hate shipping, but Toph x Aang is so adorable and awesome. So I'm actually posting in one of these "war room" topics. <3 So yeah. That's really all I have to say. xD

^Hey right now I'm rowing three boatsXD(Zutara, Tophaang, and Tykka!) Shipping could be a pain sometimes but it's worth it in the end! I was just wondering whether Aang's Waterbending lessons are over? At first I got a sense that Aang had a lot to learn when Katara told him that he still needed to practice Waterbending. But after she tested him with the bamboo stem she told him that he had the excellent reflex skills of a Waterbending master! And they saluted one another in an Honorable teacher/student way:>/ So are Aang's Waterbending lessons over as of now? It would make sense since the transition from Winter to Spring and now that he's learning Earthbending... So I guess were going to see a lot of Toph&Aang interaction! Makes for great humor^^! I'm wishing for Aang to teach her a little bit on being "free" like an Airbender while she teaches him to have his "feet firmly on the ground" like an Earthbender so they'll be learning from one another! Equaling More *touching moments!* ............. ........... ....... ..... .. . @ Jazzie: I've read your song post on the Zutara thread and now here in the Tong room as well and I have to hand it to you, the songs you selected hit the target with these two ships ! And I love them all, especially the Frou Frou one for Zutara! (*rabid Frou Frou fan^^*)

Equaling More *touching moments!* [/sub] [/quote] AGREED. ^____^ I think they need to take a private 'training' trip, maybe to a cute little town or something. Katara wouldn't be there to baby Aang and Sokka wouldn't be there to distract them, and they could have some real quality time together. And then after a long day of being pushed by Toph, Aang can master a really hard move, and hug Toph in his excitement, who will blush and wonder what the heck she's feeling....and then they can take a break and go into town and Aang can get Toph to open up and have fun and then they can go back to camp and fall asleep next to each other! *huff huff* Yeah....*wheeze, pant* I wish. Much love for Tong.

I wonder how many Tophaang fans there are? We should really do a head count.
@Palindrome: Breathe in and breathe out. I love your Aang/Toph scene-it's so cute! I am really hoping Aang's charm will be able to soften Toph as the series progresses and in some way Aang may be able to build a major self-confidence boost with Toph's tough teachings!
