This ship is awesome. A tea room, huh? Maiko in a tea room...something doesn't seem quite right about that picture. ;D Just kidding...
I don't think Maiko is all that one-sided. The two were probably seven or eight, so Zuko wasn't interested. Now, four or five years later we have no clue where that relationship could have gone. Flirting, holding hands, a date on the playground: you never know. What I want to see is for them to meet each other again. That should be interesting.

Yeah, me name is spreading! *Is shot* (Well, it is. >.<) Finally has a room...*Sigh* I highly enjoy this pairing... *Points at sig* I still enjoy other pairings too, but this one is too adorable and mature.
Yup. Adorable and mature= Maiko!X)
Edit: Why are so many saying its 'one-sided'? There has barely been a two-sided pairing in Avatar, excluding Sokkas! >.< The injustice!X(
I really think it speaks volumes, though, that Zuko thought of Mai- even in a flashback. I really do. But I understand this may be my fangirl parts voicing out. X) Oh, well.

I totally shipped Mai/Ty Lee more than I shipped Mai/Zuko until Zuko Alone. But then, my greatest love was Mai/Zuko/Ty Lee. But this is all clearly in fanon since it's totally not happening on the show.
Mai/Zuko is the clear winner as my canon ship and being a canon-lover girl as I am it thus now owns the majority share of my love.
See, I disagree on a few points here. The first is the classification of Mai as intense in the same way that Zuko is. I would say that being so detached is sort of the opposite of being intense. Not to mention that I would say that she was quiet (part of being detached, clearly) but that doesn't necessarily equate directly to overseriousness. Remember, one of the things Mai has demonstrated is a wry wit. ("Please tell me you're here to kill me.") To me, she reads as someone who lives in their own head a lot, which is why she's quiet (see: her sitting against a tree twiddling her fingers while Ty Lee and Azula cartwheel) and who is also unchallenged and unexcited by the life she leads: thus the boredom.
This is just so drastically different from Zuko who is demonstrably actually very serious and driven, terse, but prone to emotional outbursts.
Basically, Zuko is quiet because he's reining in a lot of emotion all the time. Mai is quiet because nothing much (except Zuko, apparently!) inspires a reaction in her.
So, even though I do not at all support the philosophy that people are who are very similar won't have a "balanced" relationship (Ever hear the saying that the only thing opposites attract is divorce?), I wouldn't call Zuko and Mai extremely similar. Especially not in temperament.
In the end, when it comes to relationships I'm more concerned about how the characters' traits could possibly complement each other rather than how superficially opposite or identical they are.
I also have to completely agree with amiraelizabeth about how much gun-jumping is involved in determining that relationship always was and always will be one-sided based on their interaction when they were like 9 or 10.
Wait until we see them interact after hitting puberty, at least. I mean, there's a reason they've decided to show us this crush of Mai's. And, I do find it significant that as Zuko's having all these flashbacks about important moments in his life there's the day he and Mai fell into a fountain.
Though it's probably quite unlikely, I think it would be hilarious if when Azula catches up with Zuko he's ready for fighting and trash-talking, etc. then sees Mai and has a moment of 0_0. Mostly because I love the scenario of the little boy who doesn't care about the crush the little girl has on him, then years pass, she's all grown up, and at the sight of her he starts reevaluating his childhood decisions.

*O,O...*
*Exhalts Gotterdammerung* So, so well said. I-I agree *and awesom sig!*...Uwah! Very well said! ^_^ I would so much love to see that realationship, and Zuko having a moment, when he just sort of pauses seeing her older...Its been awhile since he's seen her, I'm sure. There must be some sort of reaction...
...right? XD Has anyone written any Maiko drabbles? *I would love to see them! X)* I'm working on one..

I feel so...legitimitized. Though I'd probably prefer a cafe or tea room to a war room too, but! Whatever. This is still the perfect occasion to debut my new sig and icon! I was always intrigued by Mai/Zuko because I always felt like putting the perpetually unimpressed, disaffected-by-everything Mai with Zuko, who's so prone to fits of temper and being very obvious when he feels things strongly, would just be an interesting dynamic. I can imagine Zuko going off about one thing or another and Mai just sitting there calmly waiting for him to wear himself out, maybe offering up a few dry remarks here and there. And, you know, in times when he wasn't upset you just know that they would sit around in comfortable silence because neither of them seems like the sort that needs to talk just to make noise. Which is also why they strike me as the sort of couple who would communicate things with a look as well. YES. I have extrapolated an awful lot from two episodes, only one of which they appear in together. But that's because I've spent far too much time thinking about this. Just as guilty. XD I spend quite a few moments just taking the time to roll over the realationship Zuko and Mai would have. *I even spent about an hour just staring at the sig- right down below. "Clumsy Struggle, Clumsy Love"- too cute! It sort of fits them* I have to exhalt you for the excellent way you described how they may act together: spending quiet moments just relaxing in eachothers presence, the type to have a whole conversation without saying a word... *Squee!* I relate myself to Mai in a lot of ways too. As how you said in the other Zuko and Mai thread Gotterdammerung, of being quiet because of nothing really sparking your intrest. I feel the exact way, and it's intersting to think of Mai with Zuko who, as you also stated, is quiet because he is trying to keep control. ...*Squee!* This pairing is love. Honestly. X) *And I'm not quieting down about it anymore! X( Sick of hearing all this trash about Mai. With all due respect, sip it you...whoever bashes her! XD* Edit: Oh, and does anyone know any Maiko fanfiction? I...really really need to see some. Badly. X) My eyes yearn!XD

I saw one on fanfiction. It was really good. ^.^ But I can't remember the title... sigh...
I can pretty much relate to Mai too. I am known among my friends as the girl with her head in the clouds...

A tea room? Iroh would be proud. It's prefect (it's not a typo). I think it should be Mako (FF7 s2!/sharks s2!), and we should be Namakoians (DBZ s2!). I think Mako tribe has a ring to it too, Sokka could be our spokesperson! "Mako tribe!" Excuse the screwy colours, but you get the idea. ;D

Three years, at least. And three very formidable ones for a young girl. The Maiko Tribe, huh? Does everyone get titles/positions? And on the subject of fanfiction...I trowl around everywhere I can think of but I pretty much never see any that wasn't written by me! I know the first one linked in my sig was literally the first piece of Mai/Zuko fanfiction to appear on FF.net and I think I only ever saw one other. Here's hoping there'll be an upswing now due to the cuteness in Zuko Alone. And towards that end I'll go ahead and link the first part of my new Mai/Zuko fic (mostly Mai/Zuko anyway!) "Got You in My Sights" aka Five Ways Mai and Zuko Don't Meet Again.

I can't think of a title I particularly want. Ah well.
IN OTHER NEWS, after a rewatch of Zuko Alone two more things came to my notice.
In the scene when Zuko is playing with his knife (and adorably falling down as though stabbed!), Azula says that he spends all his time playing with knives and he's not even good. He blushes and says that she should put an apple on her head and then they'll see how good he is.
WHICH, on reflection, struck me as something that could easily be fankwanked into a little bit of Zuko/Mai since the way that he tells Azula to put an apple on her head indicates that he might still be a little upset that she would set a flaming apple on Mai's head and thus turnabout, etc.
And the second thing which was so obvious I sort of wondered why I hadn't thought of it before...Zuko enjoyed playing with knives in his childhood. Now can we possibly guess who else might have been fond of playing with knives?
I feel there's a plotbunny in there somewhere.
