A couple years back I started writing a C++/OpenGL RPG engine, but I got tired of that quickly.
More recently I discovered that an older piece of software was being revived that would do basically everything I wanted my engine to do, so I started playing with it. After doing that for a couple days I was helping so many people that I was asked to become a moderator on the engine's forum. Now I needed to use the software a bit more, so I got started with a fun project just to learn the ins and outs of it all.
This is what I was able to do by myself with a crappy basic set of tiles and a sprite from RPG Maker XP.
This is a Mountain Pass to Omashu that I threw together in a few minutes. (looking at it now, I can see a few small things to change.)
I figured Omashu was a very steep and hilly place, being on a mountain and all.
The little wooden information post you see there is basically a sign telling you that Omashu is just ahead.
I can make wall posters saying to watch out for the Blue Spirit or what have you.
This one is a simple valley/field I put together to show smaller changes in land height and a bit more green. Aang is standing behind a plant thanks to layers.
You can't see the flowers moving in the air, but that's fine.
The final image is of the entrance to an abandoned Earth Avatar's temple.
As of right now the engine is under development, I'm just playing with the newest Beta avaiable.
I'm doing all of the mapping, writing, making NPC's, Items, Spells (think bending), and hosting the server by myself.
I'm not great at drawing, so for now this is probably not going to be released. I just don't have the time to do everything myself.
Ohh, yeah, I did say server. It's online, but I won't call it an MMORPG, maybe just an MORPG or ORPG.
Besides, the new engine is in development and there's no guarantee that the work I do on the beta will carry over to the new version.
