Just some friendly advice as you're starting out here on the forums: You probably should've placed this post in the other thread you started, "making avatar custom figures need reference pics" since this question still falls under that category- Rather than start a whole new thread. Don't worry, forum etiquette is a learning process. With that out of way- My past experience tells me that you're going to have a hard time finding female figures in the right scale to the other Mattel toys. The best I could offer you for advice is to look at the ToyBiz Marvel line. They're one of the only toy lines that routinely feature female characters, but I think those heads would be too small for the Avatar line. You might actually just want to cannibalize an Aang figure! He's got the right features. With some added putty-sculpted hair and a re-painted face, I bet he could pass for Toph. Plus the Aang figure would be the same height of Toph in theory.

oh sorry ill be sure to put things in the threads that they belong in.
actually, i collect the toybiz marvel legends line and have almost every one but their heads are all too realistic looking. i want toph to have a more animated feel. i have an extra aang, i might just use him.
thanks for the advice.

ok, so i took alternatecoppa's advice and used aangs head but now i dont know if i should add lines on her hair or keep it one piece(when sculpting). i dont know what would look best because all the figures that have been made so far heve been bald! and is toph wearing a dress or is t really baggy pants? a few customs (katara, iroh, toph) are almost done and i should have pics up by the first week in feb. im sure that they wont turn out as great as alternatecoppa's though.

It seems to me that Toph is wearing pants. Such a lil' tomboy... Determining if the hair should be smooth or have sculpted lines to suggest texture, is really up to your interpretation. They're 2D illustrations and that always creates a lot of unanswered questions when it comes to translating them into 3D space. Here's the rules I've adopted for myself: I look at how they've drawn the outside edge of the hair. If it's jaggy, then I feel it suggests that the hair has a lot of 'messy-hairy' texture. If the edge is smooth, then I'd sculpt it smooth and flat to mimic the drawing's look. However I've seen figures like 'McFarlane's 3D Animation from Japan' line go ahead and sculpt textured hair on characters regardless of the fact that their profile looks smooth on screen. So it's up to you. Textured hair makes the sculpt look more realistic, smooth hair makes it look more like the animated source... Which is the way they sculpted my favorite figure line of all time, The Beatles Yellow Submarine: ;D

ok all i need to do is put tophs head on the body and im done. katara has to get a final coat of paint and i started over from scratch with iroh. the body i was using was too tall. he just needs to get a sculpted belly and i need to figure out how to make his dress thing. im waiting for parts to arrive for azula(she will be simply a head swap) that will be here in a week. so, ill be ready to post pics(final and WIP) very soon and dont know how to do so. would anyone care to explain?

Nice job on the hair! Where are the arma from? How did you do the skirt? Is it taken from another figure? What paints did you use- Acrylic, Enamel, Latex?
Very good job. If there was a way to reduce the neck length, I'd say it's spot-on!

thanks everyone! esp. alternate for giving help along the way. this was actually a very easy custom. the body is a naruto orochimaru. (got it @target for $2 on clearance) and the haed is aangs with sculpted hair. the neck looks long because i had to put a ton of sculpey to hold up her head. i used the cheap acrylic paints from craft stores with a sealer on top. sry for the crappy pics.

You may want to consider another attachment method besides just using Sculpey. Here's a ghetto diagran I whipped up real quick: See? That proves that not everything I do looks cool ;D But as you can see, the center pin will provide a stronger attachment point for your head. You can glue it if you want to really secure it or leave it be if you want it to still pivot.
