The whole stroyline would have been comprimised and it would not be the same Avatar that we love. I think Aang's age is perfect for the story, a kid who has the destiny of saving the world, just seems better to me than a 16yr. Aang would already be more mature then and not the playful, fun loving, yet very serious boy we've grown to love. Nope I think it's perfect the way it is.

I think Aang is adorable as a 12 year old. He is mature and if Katara wanted to she could be with him. One of my friends is 14 and she is literally in love with a 12 year old at school.

You couldn't be more right about that. Usually, the female lead is the younger of the two. The reversal of ages is something that makes Avatar even more unique. It does make Avatar unique to some but doesn't Nick usually expose the older girl, younger relationship in the majority of their shows? After watching many titles-especially Anime- I have to say its nothing new for me In order to be able to symapthize with the characters we have to relate to the character in some way. Not many of the general public which watched Avatar has experienced a complete genocide of thier people-although it does happen in real life, but there are many 12 year olds watching Nick, that's for sure. they can relate to Aang's personality and watching Aang mature and face his inner struggles make them want to do the same. Not to mention 12-year olds are currently experiencing the 7th grade course You know the time where girls are actually seen as girls instead of buddys or cooties, lol.

Of course he should, when I see the show I alway feel everyone is at least 2 years older, if not 3 or 4.

The only reason i think he should be 16 so maybe people would quiet hating on him maybe he would be less annoying to the emo lovers.

^^Perhaps it's not the age, but the totally happy all the time, attitude he has. I admit it gets annoying, no one and I mean no one is that happy all the time. But I do love Aang, his character as a whole is adorable and it would just not be the same. I don't think that there are really that many Aang haters out there, really who could hate the kid? He's pretty much what a real 12 yr old is.

Well the thing is Aang is NOT happy all the time. The thing about Aang is that in spite of all the BS coming at him, in between the volleys of BS he's able to smile, laugh, and have fun. Zuko on the other hand lets the BS flying at him stick to him, weigh him down in an unhealthy way, and just complains.
What Aang does is healthy, and shows a special strength. Speaking as someone who's actually lived through seriously rough times and seen some pretty bad aspects of human nature and still manage to be optimistic and idealistic, I can say that people who've become jaded an cynical just don't understand how I can be so happy and optimistic, it gets on their nerves.

Welcome to DH, btw! (I'm new, too, but i figured i'd welcome you anyway. ) I like Aang at 12, too. I have to say that i can see myself in his happy-go-lucky nature--that's how i naturally tend to be (at least sometimes), and despite the fact that i've been going through some rough times lately, which can certainly depress one, i haven't given up on the more carefree side of myself. And yes, i like the idea of the heroine being older than the hero--it adds a new dynamic.

Make me wonder if you don't believe a kid could save the world...even in the avatar world.

I would answer this question with this:
NO
I like Aang being 12, it makes the atmosphere both darker and lighter at the same time. Aang is the character that is going to have to grow up much sooner then he wants too, he is going to have to learn everything in the hardest way possible. If Aang were an arrogant 16 year old (most 16 year olds these days are) I would hate him. Its like why I hate Sonic the Hedgehogs character, hes lazes around, hes completely uncaring, if the world starts to blow up big deal he can save it later. But for Aang its much different, the Firenation has practically won this war, and Aangs skills are still growing. He is not "the picture of perfection" he is not "the ultimate lifeform" no, he is a kid a kid with the whole world on his shoulders a kid who must face outer demons as well as the demons in himself this is where Avatars appeal is at Its not the target audience that matters, heck Aang could have been 30 by the time we met him. No its the struggle that matters, Aang is a reflection of those kids who do feel they are responsible for their parents breaking up, or those kids who live in fear of another terror attack But Aang gives a good message, no matter how young you are you can make a difference, and that is the most appealing thing of all.

what so an older girl can't have a relationship with a younger guy? when did this happen? anyways i like him at twelve, it shows a little kid trying to save the world. if he was sixteen i don't think the show would be as funny.

For a 12 year old aang is really mature. But when it came to his relationship with katara, he should've been older. I can't really see a 14 year old dating a 12 year old. I've heard of a 12 year old dating a 14 year old...or a 16 year old dating a 12 year old
