For a 12 year old aang is really mature. But when it came to his relationship with katara, he should've been older. I can't really see a 14 year old dating a 12 year old.

Aang was a simple monk after all, but I think he's better off as a 12 year old.

I don't see a problem with a 12 year old going out with a 14 year old, but I can see why people would but our society is totally different from that within the realm of Avatar's. Anyway, I like that Aang's 12. It gives him this innocence and playfulness that I really admire and love, not to mention that he's pretty mature for a kid and I love how they show that.

...Okay, if I'm understanding you correctly, you think Aang should be sixteen in order to be paired with Katara?
Is that the only reason you think he should be sixteen?
The dynamics of the show would change drastically. The point of Aang being the age he is, is to bring to attention the multitude of responsibilities this kid has. It wouldn't be nearly as impressive if he was in his mid-teens. There's a "been there, done that" element to that. Instead, this twelve-year-old is forced to find a balance among his personal relationships ( Katara, mainly ), his duty to the world, and his own life as the last survivor of the Air Nomads. How unique! He's forced to mature so quickly, yet he retains his youthfulness and even manages to separate duty from fun... imagine if the twelve-year-olds of our world were capable of such! ( And a few are; it's very rare. )
Pairing him with a fourteen-year-old brings to the equation even more noteworthy points. Aang is mature; I'm glad we're all acknowledging that. Is he mature enough for Katara? While I suppose it's really a matter of opinion and how you yourself feel about this relationship, I'll answer with a firm "yes". Katara viewed Aang as "a sweet little guy, like Momo" up until The Fortuneteller, when she seriously re-evaluated her opinion of him. From that point on, upon closer examination, you'll notice that she comes to view him as more of an equal in standing than a little kid. I'm not sure she's even conscious of his age these days! His maturity definitely has its rewards!

I agree with your whole post, GOZ. *Karma* As for his romance with Katara, I love how Aang's the younger one in the relationship. It gives the whole Hero/Heroine romance a whole new twist, IMO.

Avatar is a kid's show, so M&B proably wanted the main character to be the age of the viewers, so they can relate.
Also, Aang has many mature past lives in him, so it wouldn't be suprising for him to be more mature than the average 12 year old. Not to mention he has been through alot, which would make anyone mature.

I would have preferred an older Aang, but that's just because I don't really care for shows based off of young characters(Avatar, of course, being the exception). If Zuko and Iroh weren't part of the show, I wouldn't like it nearly as much.

Many thanks, Melis. You couldn't be more right about that. Usually, the female lead is the younger of the two. The reversal of ages is something that makes Avatar even more unique. Kana, you have a point about the target demographic. A show about a sixteen-year-old is harder for Nickelodeon's supposed "core audience" to relate to.

I think he's better off being 12, because most people underestimate kids and he proves that kids can do a lot. Or maybe that's because he's the avatar......... oh well.......If he was older, I don't think i would relate that much because I'm a crazy person who likes craziness. Having characters my around my age is cool.

I once made up an idea for a fanfic in which Aang was sixteen. And he was only in the iceberg for 96 years. So he's 16, and Katara and Sokka are still the same ages. It's not a well-developed idea though. I also made up an idea in which Aang was only 8, and had 2 years to master the elements instead of one.
But back on topic... Yes, I love the fact that Aang is so young. I mean, the whole "kids-save-the-world" idea is kinda overused. But Avatar does it in a unique way.
And I agree that the age dynamic between Aang and Katara makes the romance unique and interesting too.
I remember that when I first started watching Avatar, I was Aang;s age. Now I'm Katara's age! XD So it's cool that I can sorta relate.

aang is only as mature as he is because he was bought up from a very young age under strict discipline and training regimes...this is all done in the isolation from the rest of the world in the air bender temples. if aang was sixteen wouldnt we be seeing a lot more umm....shipping between katara and aang, because of all the hormones and urr....stuff. and ATLA would be a pg 14 (probably)
