Name: Lin
Age: 16
Gender: female
Nationality: Earth Kingdom
Skills: Earthbender. Lin is currently studying earthbending on an intermidiate level. She has mastered basic forms, and is now moving onto more complex moves. She is progressing at an average speed.
Appearance: Lin is of average height, slightly flat-chested, with a muscular build from regular earthbending practice. She has bright forest green eyes (hence her name, meaning "forest" or "jade"). Her skin is an olive color, although her shoulders and legs (which are not exposed to as much sun) are paler. Her hair is wavy and a dull burnt sienna color). She wears worn brown clothes; a shirt reaching below her hips, pants, and hard-soled shoes. Usually, she'll have a straw hat (the same color as her clothes) hung by earthy colored ribbons over her shoulder, good for working on her family's farm.
Personality: Growing up in a farming family, Lin is hard-working and tough. She has a good sense of humor, which can sometimes turn to sarcasm. She's very protective of her family and younger brother, and can't stand it when visiting nobles call them and her fellow townspeople "uncultured idiots" and other, ruder names. Lin also has a lot of ambition; she wants to work hard at her earthbending, and despite loving her hometown, wants to travel the world to participate in earthbending competitions.
However, for now she is happy working on her family's farm. Once you get to know her she is a pleasant person, though quite strong-willed and outspoken (often making her look foolish). She has several good friends (being few people her age in town) and knows she still has a lot to learn; about earthbending and life.
History: Lin was born in the trading town of Chang, in the eastern Earth Kingdom to Ming and Huang, farmers. Huang, her father, is a strong, dark man. Lin gets her humorous nature from him. Ming, her mother is a petite and rather guant women, of a kind, caring nature. Neither are benders. She has a younger brother, Mu, who also is not a bender. He is a skinny boy of eight, with unruly hair. In their family, physical strength and experience is much more important than academics (Lin doesn't go to school).
Since a young age, Lin has worked on her parents farm on the outskirts of the trading town of Chang. They breed ostrich horses, which are sold to merchants, then exported around the world. They also grow tomatoes, carrots, potatoes, and other vegetables that they sell in the market in town. Their farm is several miles downriver the Zhi River which passes by Chang. A winding dirt road connects them and a moor seperates them. A wood is behind their farm, followed by mountains and then the ocean.
They live in a small wooden house, low-tech (for the Avaverse), and a marginal average living conditions and her family has an average income for a farmer. They have a den, kitchen, dining area downstairs and three bedrooms upstairs. Huang and Ming's bedroom faces the river, Mu's the forest, and Lin faces Chang. They have an attic too, and their house is narrow and seemingly unstable. Despite its rickety appearance though, it has housed the family for many generations.
They have a six stall barn for the ostrich horses, with a hayloft. They have pens for the ostrich horses and several acres of pasture. They have two fields for vegetable growing.
Since Lin was young, the family pet, and old, grumpy rooster (a rare animal) named Tai, who lives on the farm, has been her companion.
Their town is considerably large, though still a tightly knit community. It is a trading center between several larger cities, so nobles and great merchants often visit. Some have a superior attitiude toward the townspeople.
At age 7, Lin's parents discovered she had the gift of earthbending. They immediatley signed her up for lessons (despite the high price) with the local teacher, Master Xun. Lin has been studying hard ever since.
When she was 8 years old, Lin's mother, Ming gave birth to Mu. Lin was glad to have a brother, hoping that when she got older there would be less work for her on the farm (though she enjoys it) so she could practice hard at her earthbending.
One of Lin's best friends is Ai Hong, who greatly contrasts in both appearance and personality from Lin. Ai's family is wealthier, and use to live in Omashu, until they moved to Chang to manage their buisness easier (they are jewel dealers and Chang is a "gateway" to several Earth Kingdom mining towns). Ai is elegant with creamy skin, black hair, usually wearing finely tailored robes. She is docile and dainty, but loves joking around with her friends.
When Lin and Ai first met (both were 11), Lin ignored her (thinking she was just another arrogant rich brat). But when Ai's poodlemonkey, Qing, escaped, Lin, unbeknownst that the creature was Ai's, rescued him with earthbending before he was almost trampled by an ostrich horse Huang was bringing into town to sell (which was why Lin was in town). They soon became friends, but even after years Ai's parents do not approve of their friendship.
Lin's other friends are Niu (17) and Wei (14) are her fellow earthbending students studying under Master Xun. Niu is the most mature member of the group, with average features. She lives in town with her mother, who is a painter, often visiting Lin's families farm on her way to the mountains and ocean for painting expeditions. Niu's father is serving active duty in the Earth Kingdom army. Because both her parents are gone a lot, Niu has had to grow up fast and is very independent.
Wei is rather serious, the oldest son of the teachers at the town's local private school. He is an exceptionally gifted earthbender. He often visits his friends to escape the madness of his house. His parents make him go to the school (free tuition since they are the teachers) as well as develop his earthbending skills with twice weekly lessons with Master Xun. He is quite smart, and usually beats his friends at strategic games.
Lin's other good friend is Bo, whose parents are farmers and good family friends, owning a farm on the opposite side of town. He is rather pessimistic and quiet. When Lin was young (9) she had a small crush on Bo, who was also fond of her, but they were both too young for a real relationship and are just friends now.
Besides earthbending, Lin extends the amount of work on the farm by exercising the ostrich horses that are already trained (she's learning training methods from her father). She sometimes rides through the woods and across the moor.
She is also learning to play Pai Sho from Wei, which she enjoys, but is dreadful at. In addition, she is a collector of various trinkets that Nui's father brings back from his military expedtions. He knows by now that Lin is an avid collector and that Nui simply is not interested, so he brings his souvenirs directly to Lin. Lin currently has items from as far south as Kyoshi and Omashu and as far north as Ba Sing Se.
She hates laziness and when Ai acts a bit stuck up (one incident when they first became friends involving charity ><). (They share a mighty strong bond, mind you.) She also dislikes spicy foods and rainy weather. She likes warm weather and the smell of fresh hay.
