Since many of the names in the Avatar-verse are of Chinese origin, I was wondering if there is a place out there in the intertubes that has a Chinese name/word generator.
I have been to various places that have pre-made names, but if I or someone else wants to make there own its kind of hard

Yes, Avatar has so many influences, you never have to stick just with Chinese names. Japanese and Chinese seem prevalent to me however Hindu and Korean are great too.

Thanks! You know I have been to that site www.mandarintools.com/chinesename.html, but I was not sure if putting in words instead of names would work. True true. I have used many different name sources, but I wanted to throw some Chinese name types for good measure.

Since many of the names in the Avatar-verse are of Chinese origin I want to take this quote to name some of the Japanese names in ATLA: "Momo" means peach in japanese, and I think "Yue" means moon. Also, I was looking at a site with Japanese names for girls and their meanings, and I think it said "Mai" means dance. Most of the names in the Avatar-verse are Chinese, but Japan did their contribution too! I suggest you go to an American-to-Chinese-Dictionary site for names, because then you can maybe get the words you want translated.

^ Thats true Yue is Chinese BTW the only only Japanese names I can think of is Haru, Suki and Kenji(the zoo keeper)
I don't like using Japanese names for my characters because it's over done. and it's becoming a sue-trait..

Yue means moon. I think Kenji means either nature, wild, or animal.

I looked up Kenji and it apparently means strong or vigorous. Don't forget Kyoshi It is? I did not know that. I think that might be due to people watching anime all the time and not knowing where else to get other names.

I don't really see the problem with using Japanese names once in a while. If you're using names like "Naruto" and "Sasuke" on all your OCs, though, that's a problem. I use Japanese names all the time, and there really isn't anything wrong with that. And yeah, its because I like anime.

First off if you steal names off of anime it means you're lazy. Japanese names in general are ok in small amounts. But not a lot of the avatar characters are named in Japanese. I don't mind a character named Hoshi or Itsuki but when you have characters named Kurama, Yusake Ichigo or Kagome then you lazy and uncreative. And need to lay off the anime crack and read a book or watch a documentry. I like anime too, but I'm creative enough not to steal names from anime. (LOL COPYRITE?)
FTR Kurama is from both Elfen Lied and Yu Yu Hakasho. (Both are main characters)
I'm sorry but in IMO I think people who don't use other naming schemes besides Japanese are lazy and uncreative. (hello Asia is MASSIVE contient, you can use other contries, I like Bengali and Sanskrit names LOL)
I use guide for naming characters
-Polar water tribes, Chinese, Native American or Inuit names (EG: Kavik, Arrluk, Chulyin are all Inuit names and are my waterbender characters) I will also use Hawaiian names once in a while too =D (I know someone who has character named Kaiapo)
-For Earth Kingdom I use mainly Chinese, occasionally Japanese, but also Hindi, Khmer, Cambodian, Thai, Korean, and almost anything since the characters their are very diverse (I have chartacters named Midori, Suraj, Jiang, and Arjuna)
-Fire Nation have strong sounding names I use mainly Hindi Sanskrit and Chinese names (Sekar and Ravi are my main Fire Nation characters, But I know someone who has character named Azar and thats Persian)
-Sand nomads, are desert folk so I choose, Kurdish, Turkish, Mongolian and Persian names. (EG: Nasrin is Persian for "rose" and is my friend's drunken sandbender)
-I use Indosian, Thai and Vietnese names for my Swamp Water benders (Kulap is Thai and I have character named Indah thats Javanese)
-Finally, Bhutanese, Nepaliese, and Tibetian names for my Airbenders, (EG: Zigsa, Pema, Akar, Garkan are all Tibetian names)

I suggest you go to an American-to-Chinese-Dictionary site for names, because then you can maybe get the words you want translated. haha, you mean english to chinese? but i wouldn't trust that. not all those words are typically found in names. imagine doing it from chinese to english and naming a character "clever" because you thought of Min or something. I use www.behindthename.com but most names, but i've never done chinese because most of the ones offered are general, slightly generic and one character-ed, something only common in mainland china (ex. yao ming) Most chinese names I DO know (like my own..heh) don't even look right romanized (de ru?) so yeah.

I love all the names in Avatar....but lots of them are japanese or chinese sounding. And many of the locations in avatar were probably based off of real places in China or Japan. A big example of that is the royal palace of Ba Sing Se having a near complete resemblence to the Forbidden City in China!
