In any case, people's perceptions about her relationship with Zuko will be ruined. The notion of a younger sibling bullying and surpassing the older is striking and gives the show a different dimension. I fully believe it to be the creators' intent. Also, the dubbers'll need to go back and address Zuko's reason for being heir apparent instead of his "older" sister. Actually, probably not. Doesn't the Lost Fire Scroll say that the Fire Lord Lineage is generally passed down through the first born son? Even if Azula was first born, her gender would make her second best automatically because of tradition. Azula surpassing her brother would then be a gender role issue which is another can o' worms.

^Ozai is already in violation of that. From what we know of the Fire Nation, no one seems too upset about this ( although I suppose we could learn something contradictory in Season Three ). Even at the funeral, it went unquestioned as everyone bowed before the second-born heir. We don't know what events transpired in order to make Ozai the reigning Firelord without protest. I can't help but wonder why they were so placid about it.
Mm, I'm not seeing such a gender bias in the Fire Nation. Again, the happenings of Season Three may very well contradict what I've said, but surely everyone knows that Azula became the Firelord's heir -- by default, if nothing else -- after Zuko's banishment. Should it be relevant, I'd think Zuko would've mentioned it in some context. But perhaps we'll hear the citizens gossiping about it in the Fire Nation?...

^While Ozai went against doesn't mean it would stir up some questioning if Azula was made heir instead of Zuko given the preceding tradition. Ozai is more likely to break it obviously, but Azula would have to preform better then a male heir would (and she does, no denying that.)
And there is no evidence of gender bias in the FN (as a speech Zhao made in S1 implicates that both men and women join the army) but I'm not going against the idea of a bias against Azula taking rule. It makes more sense all things considered.

Although the true meaning of this quote is up for grabs, Zuko expressed national (?) favortism of Azula, gender nonwithstanding:
"She's a Firebending prodigy, and everyone adores her."
If "everyone" = the nation at large, I'm not seeing why they would take issue with her ascending the throne. We don't know, at this point, the context in which Zuko was speaking. "Everyone" could amount to the nobility, military, or take on a very literal meaning.
Also, with Azula's standing as the current heir, the citizens certainly have to realize that she'll likely rise to power one day.
To me, they desire a ruler that will bring pride and power to their nation; to elevate their standing in the world as "the superior element". Azula would do that... and perhaps it's why Ozai is held in such high regard, though he himself broke the firstborn son tradition. With such little insight into the role gender plays in their society -- little, if any, if we're to examine Zhao's quote, at least from a military standpoint -- it really is hard to say. I somehow think they'd overlook her gender in light of what she has to offer.

Moving on from Zoisaito's post, I still find it interesting that the Fire Nation allowed Ozai to rule when (as far as we know) he has no notable accomplishments. Azulon, as was stated in his funeral, served as a courageous general before his ascension to the throne, however Ozai was at home watching the kids when he was given the crown. I'm rather fond of the theory that the Fire Nation populace will overthrow Ozai in favor of Azula, it would be fun to watch. Sorry for slight off topicness

Even if the populous didn't like Ozai as Fire Lord what could have they done about it? It's a monarchy where even the nobility has to bow to the will of the ruler.

I think that her being only fourteen just makes her talent and skills more amazing and also makes her scarier. If she's like this when she is so young think about what she'll be like a few years from now.

^^Add 14 yr old bannished from home, and a 3 yr anniversery. Unless I can't add that makes Zuko 17 going on 18, which means that the other characters may have an extra yr on them. Like I said, they need to be careful, it could have been a slip or an oversight on their part, but it was a big slip and it was caught, by more than just myself!

I don't think we're given any DOBs for any of the characters so Zuko is still 16 unless other wise noted in some official source.

(Eh, srry if this was already said) Nick.com says fourteen, but you have to think about how much time has elapsed in the 'Avatar timeline.'
