Hey, things would be great if I turned into my favorite animal but dragons don't exactly exist in this world, so...no. I like sticking to canon, although I tend to bend, no pun intended, a LOT of rules regarding characters, character development, and character relationships. Although I wouldn't mind turning into an air bison...those guys ROCK! ![8-)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/cool.png) ~Shirozora

There's difference between bending rules and breaking them.

I prefer pushing things to the limit than breaking them. Back to the topic.... I think something should be said about where the fanfiction focuses. I'm quite tired of reading stories in which two characters get all the spotlight, attention, and character development...and everybody else sorta rots on the sidelines. I mean, I don't mind reading about this character, or those two characters, or three characters, etc, but I'd like some attention paid to making sure other characters don't...act mentally challenged, I suppose. This stuck in my head after reading a Zutara fic because while the Zuko x Katara relationship seems rather feasible, the Sokka x Ty Lee (Ty Lee actually got dumped and replaced by Jun? WTF?) and Aang x Toph relationships seemed a bit....fake. Okay, REALLY fake. I got mad. ![8-)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/cool.png) ~Shirozora

I know you probably answered me already, but what about the question about my character Washi?

Funk, YOU ARE THE COOLEST. You took SO MUCH TIME! And honestly, I've seen fics with each and every one of these characteristics and I am so glad that someone's acknowledging that it CAN BE SOLVED! Personally, I prefer to stick to canon, mostly- maybe out of laziness, maybe out of intimidation that it won't be up to standard. But that way none of these traits show up- which is what I prefer. ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/grin.png) You deserve SO much karma for this- I can only give you one per hour, though... sob. And I also prefer having only a few characters- in isolated situations. Because if you have like 20 characters, you have to keep switching POV and time and place and setting, and unless you have REALLY madd skilz, this will be quite difficult. Also- description is big for me. I could read just constant description for five pages straight and not get bored- I NEED a mental image. I don't know if that applies to other people. Just does for me. That's how I got through Tolkien, heh heh... He's all like, "And the hills and the sky and the trees and..." just really beautiful description all around. That's what makes it real. And keep it simple- because although large words are nice and impressive and all, real beauty can also be found in simplicity. *desperate attempt at deepness* Just my little advice tidbit, heh heh. I'll shut up now. KARMA! Seriously, Funk, you really rock.

I know you probably answered me already, but what about the question about my character Washi? Um... if you think your question might've already been answered, why don't you go to your question and read the posts following it? There's only three pages, for crying out loud o_0

*Cheers funk on* I'm a noob to writing avatar fanfics so this was a big help. Karmas for funk!
anyway that being said I disagree, but only slightly, on two minor points. One being swearing. if it kept to a minimum and nothing to bad is used i think it makes things more interesting. for example, i hope you dont mind me borrowing your good bad approach.
Bad: "YOU $%&^$# LEAVE APPA ALONE YOU ^&%&^%&^%&^*%&%$%$" screamed Aang.
Yeah, not only would he never say that but it's not interesting it's annoying.
Good: "Your a lying bastard Jet" grumbled Sokka.
This i could easily see that happening. it's not a seriously bad word and if you don't go curse word happy it can be interesting and make sense.
second being what i cal the ZOMG MARY SUE HAIR! factor (I call it that because it's the easiest example to use). yeah i can see how to many overly unique traits can be annoying, and if all your OC's are like that it turns into a stampede of sue's. but if its just one or two minor traits like hair/ eye color or a unique scar, you know something that sets the character apart but does not make him/her overwhelming i honestly don't see the problem. Now i mentioned hair because it's easy and here is what i mean.
Bad: "Tee Hee i love my hair!" squealed the girl proudly displaying her electric pink locks.
yeah. even dyed that makes no sense, especially in the avatar universe.
Good: "So what's with the blond hair?" asked the shopkeeper, "not many people have hair like that". Kuroda shrugged. "Family trait" he said, "My mom had blonde hair".
first off the hair is unusual but still of a natural color leading an air of uniqueness to the character while not making it overwhelming or having the character become world changing. I guess my point is you could have something that's widely considered a 'sue' trait but as long as they are few and far between so as not to make the character dominate the world/ stick out like a sore thumb then it can add a bit of flair to the character.
Anywho good job on the Guide. i think i'll give it another read.

One problem:
Toph was kept completely isolated, making this improbable. that is all.

Wow! These are actualy some of the best fanfiction tips I've ever read. Trust me, I should know. I have acounts on forums for practicaly any anime I've ever watched. As you can see, I'm in a Shugo Chara fase, bust avatar is still at the top of my list, for sure!
What I really loved was how you talked so much about different bending. I see alot of writers having trouble with OB's (Original Bending, as I've come to call it.) Though, their plot lines tend to be pretty good. It's sad how the wrong writing style, bad spelling, bad grammer (Can't stand reading stories with poor grammer!) and too much dialoge can ruin an amazing plot line. I've re written too many of my own fan fictions to know -_-
I hope everyone who's going to write an avatar fanfiction checks this place out and follows it's advice.
Again, Great Job!
