Name meanings? Not sure. I found some name origins, though. Apparently, in Hinduism (the idea of the Avatar comes from that religion, so it's a good place to look) "Bhumi" is the name of the primary Earth deity. (She's the mother of Sita, who is accepted as a goddess of spring and earth herself. Sita is also the wife of Avatar Rama...Taang hint...?)
And Agni is the god of fire...although in Tibet Agni Tara is a goddess. (You know, Agni Kai....meh.)
Huh. I wonder if any of the other character's names come from Hinduism. (Goes to look around.)

Toph means drums in Hebrew. Appa means cone in Tagalog (lol).

'Zhao' looks like it's pronounced similar to 'Jiao' which means arrogant or proud.
And I doubt these are significant, but 'ten' (Lu Ten) is Japanese for 'Heaven,' and a 'Kata' (Katara) is a martial arts routine.

another translation for Teo comes from Spanish . . . an abbreviation of the names Matteo and Teodor, Teo on it's own means God. Not sure how to incorporate that into his personality or doings, but it's one that I found fun.

Heh. Teo is a chinese-originated last name in my country.. (eg. Darren Teo) I don't think it means anything though.. But if its chinese-originated, One of the provinces in ancient China must have been "Teo" or something like that.

I finally updated with season three names.
I've run out of room on the first post so I'll have to make a new list somewhere else in the thread.

lol wow.... must have takes forever to find all of that..... Pretty much; the real annoyance was just finding the meanings or toiling away at finding one name's meaning only to discover it has no relation to the character and so won't be used. Wikipedia really helped. Sadly they have shortened the Avatar entry so that each episode has a few sentences description and minor characters are only mentioned by name- they actually featured the name meanings.

"chou" (pronounced "shoo") is also french for cabbage. very clever, really.
it's a Vietnamese name meaning "virtuous," and i think in Vietnamese it's pronounced "Dway" but i could be wrong.
i'm fairly certain it's spelled "Huu," in which case it would also be a Vietnamese name (the Foggy Swamp Tribe seems based on the Vietnamese, even their portrayal as "hicks" which i have been told is how the rest of Asia sees them). "Huu" in Vietnamese means "very much so." it's a common second/middle name, which accentuates the meaning of the first name. for example, Phuoc Huu means "one who deserves to be lucky." ((incidentally, "Hue" is also a Vietnamese name, but it's a girl's name, meaning "lily." it's pronounced "Hway."))
also a Vietnamese name, it means "longevity."
