I have looked through about 7 name meanings books from several cultures and I even asked a friend about Sokka's name. So far it appears that they just made it up, there is no meaning nor is the name even mentioned. I'm still looking though, I haven't given up yet.

how did u guys get these name meanings? If you look in the 'Trivia' section of the main character's articles on Wikipedia that where it's from, as well as the articles for certain episodes. Some of the minor characters have name sources mentioned in their short bios. Otherwise, lots of searching through online dictionaries an etymology websites.

Here's an interesting tidbit about the word 'tom-tom' in real life...
Tom-tom: name popularly applied to high-pitched hand drums, usually barrel-shaped and having either one or two drumheads of skin. They are tunable to specific pitches. Supposedly of Native American or Asian origin, they are sometimes used in modern dance orchestras for special effects. The terms tom-tom and tam-tam are sometimes confused; the latter is another name for the gong. (Info from Encyclopedia.com).
Also found on-line:
tom-tom (tŏm'tŏm') also tam-tam (tŭm'tŭm', tăm'tăm') [Ryth: Actually, 'tam-tam' is said to be another name for the gong, in several sites, which doesn't meet the description of a tom-tom; but it could be referring to the second part] n. Any of various small-headed drums, usually long and narrow, that are beaten with the hands. A monotonous rhythmical drumbeat or similar sound. [Hindi ṭamṭam, probably of imitative origin.]

awesome! I was curious to see what some of the names in the show meant and if they had any relation/indication to the character themself.

I have something else: In the Shinto religion, each child's name is added to a local shrine at their birth. Children whose names are not added before they die are the Shinto version of "restless spirits". They are called "Maizuko". It kind of fits...

So we went like, wow, sokka sure loves the moon (Yue and Suki) She's talkinga about the word that's romanized as "Tsuki" it sounds the same as far as I know, but it's spelt differently. I suspect a connection, but that's not really good for their relationship...

I have cleaned up the names and added more. Most meanings have been deleted since they had nothing to do with the character they are named. This does not mean the character's name has no meaning.

I have FINALLY added the names users have mentioned from here. Sorry for taking so long. I'll check if they're correct later but for now they're up.
