I think Book 2 was the best season. Book 1 was more introductions to the series and the characters. The gAang wasn't even planning ways to defeat the Fire Lord, they just wanted to get to the North Pole and learn Waterbending. In Book 2, they finally try to work towards the goal of defeating the Fire Lord, which is the whole conflict in the series. There's much more scheming and action in this Book. Book 3 started out too slow for my taste. Sokka's Master was the turning point, but it was followed by a little step back with The Beach. But if this really is the final season, I'm sure Book 3 will be the best by the end, seeing as its only halfway over. EDIT: Whoops, I just realized that I called the Fire Lord the Dark Lord. I think I was watching Harry Potter when I wrote this.

^^I edited it and changed my mistake. And yeah, cactus juice is awesome. But for some reason, I can never remember The Spirit Word. I have to think about it and then I realize that I don't like it very much.

I like Book two the best. It seems to have the most plot twists and plot-driven episodes, IMO. Most of the episodes of Season 3 haven't had enough depth for my tastes.

Actually, I like season two the most, it had Ozai's Angels with kick*** girl power without overdoing it to the point Azula was a misandristic,
Sokka was only somewhat of a dork and still retained his sarcastic smarts.
Then of course came along Toph who- as much as I am loathe to admit- really threw off the dynamics of familiarity, I know that's her job, to shake things up but her outgoing attitude is a little too much sometimes.
Zuko was somewhat angsty but this time he has every right to be and even then he's still that angry individual back in season one with some calmer tones added in.
Season two had some kickback and relax episodes with plenty enough serious ones added to even it all out. It was very dynamic until they reached Ba Sing Se where the entire brainwashing, "there is no war" policy thing ruined it all with it's gigantic plot holes.
I like season two the most.

Book 2 is the best, overall. Where Book 3 has episodes and themes that just drag it to last place. Here's hoping the unaired episodes will redeem it.

All my favorite episodes are in Book 1 so I chose that. Although it's probably tied with Book 2.
I love so many of the epis in Book 1 though, it's got to come out on top for me.
The Southern Air Temple -- for instance -- was such a good way to give back story and generate sympathy for Zuko. This is what's missing from season 3 IMO. There was an elegance to the writing where you never felt like you were being told what to think. The story just unfolded in such a brilliant way that we got all the info we needed without feeling like a lecture had occurred. But there are so many other great episodes in that season, this is just one example.
That's my problem with Avatar + Fire Lord. It was like a lecture. The same amount of information came out of an episode like The Storm but the exposition was more deftly handled.
IMO.

I voted season 3 because Season 1: When I look back at the season it was just a bunch of blah except for a few key eppies. Season 2: Confused the living daylights out of me. Season 3: More anticipated and I love the animation and expressions shown in the season. How was Book 2 confusing? Because I was a new veiwer and I didn;t get it especailly when I get to DH and and I see stuff like, Jet is dead, when I thought he was alive, didn't get anything in the season finale ntill I watched it a few times, and since everything is new you din't get it for awhile. Well I wish I could re-vote since I'm at home fumeing about the stupid delays of S3 and how mad that's making me. but season 2 was so confusing untill I watched it over and over ets.. and S1 was just blah, no real action unlike S2 and S3 just going to the north pole a few episodes that you have to watch to get a good grasp on the series and an angry freak with a ponytail chaisng 3 kids up to the north pole.

Too early to call.
Season 1 had very nice highs (Siege of the North was amazing) but overall it wasnt that impressive compared to what Avatar has become now. At the time we were like "omg a good show on Nickelodian" and were more easily impressed. But Season 1 didn't have much of a plot, and the bad episodes were... bad episodes. The newer "bad" episodes are much more tolerable in my opinion.
Season 2 was a strong season in general.
Season 3 we have yet to reach the ending arc of the season. And that part is what is usually most impressive. One of my only real problems with S3 is that Zukos character development dissapointed me. It's pretty much a rehash of his development in S2. But I think if the ending of S3 is excellent, then this will shape up to be the best season yet.

Season one had hit or miss episodes--mostly hits, but there were some that were completely misses. ("Imprisoned")
Up until season three, there was some fantastic character development and really amazing action scenes...season three's a little lacking in both of those departments (save for Ozai's Angel's characters).
Season two was the best. Strong themes, deep character development, intense action sequences, and a poignant ending. But, like Kaneda said, season three isn't over yet though I've seen most of the episodes after DoBS so it's hard to make a clear ruling yet.
