The thing is, the exact same thing applies to Azula. We saw that she trained relentlessly to get to where she is today. She had one hair out of place during lightning training, and she kept working at it until she got it down perfectly. Raw talent alone is not enough, even for prodigies. Azula got to where she is today by training to the point of exhaustion, not just by being a prodigy. And yes, Katara had practiced for years by herself, but she knew almost nothing. She had no teacher and could do little more than move water around. She didn't even know the water whip, which was an extremely basic move for waterbenders. Once she got a teacher, however, she learned in no time. You can practice martial arts by youself for years, but even if you are a prodigy, you're not going to get very far if no one teaches you any moves. Katara had no training manuals or do-it-yourself tapes. She was completely on her own, far different from Zuko, who was already being taught by professionals(including Iroh). What Azula was practicing were hugely advanced techniques that only a few can even master. The show put enphasis on her being a prodigy, in form of Zukos speach SotN and Katara being a hard working bender, in form of Pakku.

But even before she found Master Pakku she was doing some amazing things. She was self teaching herself along the way, which I'm sure is not an easy thing to do. Azula is a prodigy, cause things came easier for her, and she learned quickly, but so did Katara. She learned quickly and things started coming easier for her. I have to wonder how easily things came for Toph. She's amazing and pretty much taught herself. Zuko has kept up with Katara on his skill level, CoD he was awesome! So if Azula, Toph, and Katara are considered masters, Zuko should be one too. And if he's not, like I said before, he's so close it hurts. Although I would consider Zuko a master of sorts, he's deffinatley a broadsword master, and I think that might be his thing. His skills with broadswords may put him a prodigy standing at the particular skill. I would love to know how he learned that, my thinking is still mostly self taught!

Well...according to the official site he learned while at sea...so it took him around two years to master them...his uncle didn't show any sign of knowing he had so he must have taught himself...that's got to be a natural affinity...

Iroh could have taught him. He taught that mugger in Tales of BSS the proper mugging stance But I agree, Zuko seems to be a natural with blades. I bet on the day of Black Sun he's going be underestimated and will whoop someone's butt.

Azula is a prodigy, cause things came easier for her, and she learned quickly, but so did Katara. Katara learned three techniques in her villiage by her own during all her life there and it was basic stuff like moving the water. And she was still practicing the basics along the way in the plot. That doesn't proof she is a prodigy. She was pitted against a prodigy, namely Aang and lost the comparison and Pakku himself stated that she is a prime example that hard work beats talent. I think Pakku knows best, who is a prodigy in waterbending and who not. Katara is like Lee in Naruto, talented in working hard. Toph only knew the basics herself, making her compareable to Katara after she learned from the scroll, yet she already was able to ellaborate all needed techniques to be able to be fully Aangs master and defeat several Earth bending masters, which Katara could not. She was even able to create an unique style of Earthbending, whereas Katara was bound to learn classic Northern Watertribe. Being strict to herself and working hard for her bending is part of Katara strong willed character and charme. I don't think we should take that away from her.

I don't think anyone is trying to take anything away from Katara, she's amazing.
As for Toph, I believe it was said that she was only taught basic forms and breathing techniques. Which means she did do the rest by herself, which is probably what Azula was taught in the beginning, and then everything else came with ease. So by that standard, Katara also did the same. She was learnig knew things right up until she met Pakku, and then it all came pretty easy. So in that sense, it is easy to say they are all prodigies of sorts. Zuko had trouble with even the basics of firebending, but that could be because he is very impatient. Even with a parient and determined teacher it just didn't come to him like it did the others. Some people have and some don't. Zuko's skills with broadswords are amazing, and he will be a force on the Darkest Day, no doubt.
Basically, in some ways they are all prodigies to an extent. Azula by far being the most in your face prodigy, but the rest all have qualities that rank them with her, just not to her level.

I still find it doubtfull, that there are scenes underlining the fact that she instead of being talented works hard, but still is a prodigy. Sorry, if come up as stubborn or something.

Just to move back here, why do people believe that Zuko defeated Aang in the finale (and yet don't consider Zuko's KO by Aang one). Are the personal definitions differing or something. Because I consider a victory a knock out or being unable to continue (with the same person). Same reasoning as to why people hold it that Katara defeated Azula.

Defeated no, but Zuko was fighting better than Aang. More aggresively, more precisely, more impressively. He had Aang on the defensive the majority of the fight. The biggest blow Aang delt Zuko seemed to hurt himself more.

I am a zutarian, but I have to be far. Both Aang and Zuko are powerful benders (of course I want Zuko to be that powerful bender), but ya never know.

I always believe that his feeling got in the way of being a great powerfull bender...you need to be clear in any sistuation...also meaning you need to be simple...in a sence like Azula...she know what she all about and what make her complicated is how she will use and attack you.

I believe Zuko will wow us more than any other character this season. I mean it is Book 3:FIRE. I think Zuko will demonstrate awesomeness to make up for every negative things he has shown so far.
