Wouldn't every successive Avatar be just a little stronger than the last? If all of the Avatars' history contribute to the present one, then you would think that every time, they get a little better. For example, the creators have said Aang was the youngest Airbender to ever be marked as a master. So he must have been more gifted in his youth than say Yangchen or previous Air Avatars.

Maybe, also he may be getting an extra spiritual boost from his past lives on account of his task of having to master all the elements in less than a year.
But my theory is that maybe the weather had something to do with it? When Aang was fighting off the lava, he leaped high into the air and gathered the cold winds, with which he used to instantly cool the lava. But on Roku's island, which is located below the equator, the air is probably too warm for that kind of insta-cool airbending action.
Or maybe Roku died then just because he was supposed to, according to the great plan of the spirits or something. Or maybe it was all plotbending..

well first off, Aang had warning, allowing him and various villagers to build an enourmous trench, stopping alot of the lava. Also, Roku was fighting it the second it erupted, no preparing nothing. Aang never had toxic gas to deal with. And finally, there were two volcanoes.
