I've seen some people's photobucket account go bye-bye because people are DIRECT LINKING! It's evil. What is direct linking? Direct linking is one one person uses another's image without saving it to their own account. At DH, this is what is going on... people ask for a request and the request-filler uploades it to their photobucket. Then, the request maker takes the image and uses it in their sig or avatar spot without saving it to their own account. Below are tips for request fillers so their bandwidth will not get stolen... - Put in your first post that direct linking is forbidden. (unless you don't care -.-)
- Upload all your images to a site that does not use registered accounts, like www.tinypic.com.
- Delete the image after a week (or when the person gets it).
- If you are hosting these on your website, then disable direct linking for your website (I think this works if you have a domain or subdomain, not freewebs).
- Keep checking your bandwidth! It will be difficult to fix things when your bandwidth exceeds.
And to the request makers... Direct linking is STEALING. You are taking one's bandwidth which might contribute to why their photobucket is not working. Don't be lazy! Save images to your own account.

Awww, thanks Akash for putting this up. ^^
It's so funny cause I decided to tell everyone to do this weeks ago because like you said; my photobucket was getting filled up; so I started deleting things and hosting request's to imageshack so 1) they don't fill up my photobucket bandwidth and 2) if a person decides not to use it; it's not taking up space.
Glad to see this is a sticky now; hope everyone reads it. ^^

I'm too lazy to do this. *slap'd*
The whole temporary hosting thing doesn't appeal to me. Personally, I actually enjoy the requests I make, especially if they pwn =D

^Yea, I have like 3 Photobucket accounts so that doesn't happen. xD
Though with my first one with only 13 pages of stuff; some of the links don't work; though it could be just my computer. >< So I got a new photobucket that works fine right now (6 pages of stuff right now) and another new one as well for icon claims and other stuff that's in a group so it's easy to find. ^^
But after seeing what happened to Psera; I definitely am going to watch Photobucket so I make sure it doesn't happen to me as well. <_>

hey, what happens if the image is already hosted or whatever and you use the url... thats not direct linking is it? like if you use screenshots from firbender.com or avatarspirit, or whatever? and also i use imageshack.us when i upload.

...
That's not what he's saying.
Screenshots do not count as direct linking.
Direct linking is when I post an image or graphic from my photobucket, i.e., and they link directly to it.

I have all of my graphics others made for me saved on my hard drive. I do not use PhotoBucket anymore, but I do use servimg. It is still a decent host.

I'm still confused. So I just made a request. I went on to animegalleries, saved some pictures, and then uploaded them to my photobuckets. I used the direct link url to post on here to tell the person what pictures I used. Is that direct linking?

Keep this in mind, though: even if you do have the graphic Tinypic'd, it still doesn't mean that you can keep it forever.
For a while, I had all of the icons and sigs that I liked, (Tinypic links, mind) and kept them in my User Notes. One day, I click on them so I can check them and add them to my profile, but guess what. The image was deleted/removed. It happened to me, it can happen to you.
Now you ask, "Hok, how can I avoid this problem and be spared of frustration?"
Here's an idea that I have: when you get your request, save it onto your own Photobucket, (if you don't have one, then create an account first, then save it) then Tinypic it. When it gets deleted as a Tinypic link, go to your Photobucket, have it saved, (unless you own a computer and/or the file's still there) and upload it again. Keep in mind that I haven't tried this yet, but if it works, hurray for the both of us. =D
