The parents television counsul is made up of stupid @-holes. www.parentstv.org/They are stupid i hate them. You know you can turn the TV off. You dont have to go around shouting about how terrible shows are for children. Morons. Check out the "Best and Worst TV shows of the week" here they decide what shows are c**p and say their good. And then they take the good shows and call them c**p. They are so stupid! They said chronicles of narnia should not be viewed by children under 12! They think that any profanity makes a show terrible! Stupid morons i hate them. Television Nazis

Obviously this website is directed at parents with an agenda to "clean up telovision", and while the group itself seems overprotective and somewhat overbearing they don't seem that shocking to me.
In fact the best and worst section actually seemed rather honest. Granted i haven't read all the descriptions, but the second time (of four) that law and order was mentioned they ended their summary by saying "Although this episode tackled a serious subject matter, it was also exceptionally violent." While i found the plotline of that particular episode to be hilarious, they did depict multiple people (small children included) getting shot so it is hard to disagree with thier point. They are even pretty tame when describing family guy. While they do refer to it as degrading once, they simply warn parents to keep their kids away from it.
What is more surprising to me is the shows that they miss. They seem to be focusing more on the primetime shows, and only the well known ones at that. They are missing several later shows that are much worse for kids than anything you are likely to find on my wife and kids. The daily show regularly uses profanity and lewd conduct to poke fun at groups very similar to PTC.
I think the purpose of that list is more to let parents know what is and is not a good idea for very young children. That's not a bad thing considering the uninformed parents who took their small children to see princess mononoke (i appologise if i misspelled that) because it was a cartoon. A friend of mine sat next to a kid who asked their parents why that man's head fell off.

Ha! Idiots, taking kids to mononoke. I love my avatar. Ahistakas about to shoot off some guys arms if any one remembers that scene.
But what i dont like about the best and worst list is they dont just say a show is innaporpriate due to innapropriatness they say the show is bad in general due to being innapropriate. They said this about the show Arrested Devlopment: "(Arrested Development) will most likely continue to exhaust the same tired themes and resort to using profanity to float its plots from one joke to the other. Because of these things it is our Worst of the Week."
Yes, Arrested Development may not be appropritae for children, but anyone who has seen a single episode will know that the above statement is completely idiotic.
They say this about American Dad: "(American Dad) attempted to satirize church politics and conservative views on abortion but failed by indulging in ethnic stereotyping, scurrilousness and graphic content. It is because of this that it is our Worst of the Week." These complaints are based on political view. Saying that children should not watch a show because of that would be opressing viewponts onto others. Yes young children should not watch American Dad, but not for these reasons.
Those are just 2 of the ridiculas claims made by the PTC

Good point, those i had skipped. Going back though, i notice that the post wich went easy on Family Guy was written by someone different than the one who seems to do most of the posts (including Arrested Development, American Dad and Law and Order). Also, interestingly, the same woman reviews family guy for a second time and is much less forgiving, using more forceful language.
It is interesting to look at the "good" shows as well. For whatever reason Reba and Extreme Makeover Home Edition seem particularly popular. I personally have seen one or two episodes of Reba and i recall it being no better or worse than most sitcoms as far as "dirty" material. Then there was the glowing review of "everybody hates chris". They have this to say: "Chris' father works several jobs to make ends meet, and in one scene he is napping during the afternoon in order to be ready for his night shift. A funny scene depicts older brother Chris insisting his siblings remain very quiet, all of them watch cartoons on the television with the sound turned off and when his little sister gets the giggles, Chris quickly puts a pillow on her face so as not to wake his dad. This is played for laughs, but the underlying respect the children show for their father's need for rest so he can work to provide for them is very meaningful." That sounds like smothering to me.
Then of course they talk about Pocohontas and Alladin as upstanding children's telovision. Pocohontas, butcherey of history aside, has scenes of war and Alladin has a fairly racist line in it's opening sequence.
The bottom line is these people are playing to an audience. They are telling "concerned" parents the easy way out of raising their kids. Now they have a convenient checklist of what kids should watch and they don't have to think about it any more.

I'm confused. Why list a show more than once? It's the same freaking show. I don't care if it's another season or episode, it won't be shown again for a while. We get that it's a bad or good show, pick another one.
I understand why some of the shows are on the "Bad" list but it's common sense people. If your kids don't watch "The Simpsons," then they certainly can't watch "Family Guy" or "American Dad." Look at TV ratings, it's the only reason why they're there.
I'm really surprised "Ghost Whisperer" made it on. You'd think kids would be scared of the fact that ghosts are walking around and it might scare them to death to fall asleep. I mean, a lot of kids are scared of Santa Claus, a ghost's a bit worse. They can't see it.
I want to see "Supernatural" now after they talked about it. Hah, their site isn't doing much good. Besides, that's not even how you play "Ghost in the Mirror." You have to say the name at least forty times (I actually did it once with another name and something was in the mirror, I'm not sure what it was.).
The problem is, they don't give the rating of the show to begin with so people think these are all PG, Y7, or some crap like that. They need to do that before they start trashing or applauding it.

Well now that children are aware of the fact that life isnt perfect so they will be scarred for life and live a life of crime, drugs, violence and sex. In order to stop this we must make sure children never leave there house until the age of 40.
Then you tell them where babies come from.

i was surprised by the amount of blood in the finale (zuko cut his lip)
But what these people dont realize is that you are not supposed to shelter children from reality. Doesnt anyone know the story of buddha?

If you are an overprotective parent then they will learn about sex from peers, strangers, etc. It is best to tell the child about "stuff" and then let them watch family guy then let them pick it up off the street.

Well, there's a fine line of overprotectiveness and letting your kids see too much. However, I don't need a stupid list to tell me how to raise my kids.
Seriously, there's a fine balance one needs to achieve, and it needs to be tailored individually. I had serious nightmare problems when I was little, so no, my parents didn't let me watch scary movies (and I didn't want to >.>). My mom's a bit weird about it, but generally, at this point in my life, they let me watch what I like as long as I legally can =3.
But I wouldn't let my ten year old watch Family Guy, no. I do not think it's appropriate. Nor would I let them watch some anime. It's not the blood or the nudity that bothers me, but the sex jokes. Sure, they don't get most of them at first, but I want my kids to have a healthier look on sex, you know, for them to talk to me about it. I won't lie to them and say that the storke brought them, but there's a certain age limit on the amount of sex they should be exposed to, IMHO. Now, this varies with kids, and if they ask me openly and honestly, I won't lie, but a line should be drawn. When their older, though, I won't care as much. About the time they get into high school, I think that they can watch what they please with minimal to no monitoring.
Yes, I know this may seem to a bit too protective to most of you, but it's not horrible, I promise. GAWD, I wouldn't deprive my kids of Family Guy, I love that show! I just think that they should be at a certain age before they should really get into it, and NO ONE is going to tell me otherwise: not you, not PTC. I raise my kids how I see fit, thank you.

Well, it depends on the eleven year old. Most eleven year olds I know, however, should be able to watch it, so boo on them. Huh.
