Yes, there was something going on pre-banishment, since they are supposed to be "re-igniting" an old flame, so they could have been really good friends, or an item back in the FN.

Actually, Aaron Ehasz referred to it being "rekindled" at Comicon 06. The "reigniting an old flame" is from the summary info for the between-seasons Zuko-centric comic in the new Avatar magazine. (WHICH COMES OUT IN FIVE DAYS.)

After seeing the season 3 trailer something came to mind. We've seen Mai crush on Zuko when they were younger but we don't know their connection before his banishment. For all we know, they could have been together when Zuko got banished. It would also clarrify why Mai simply smiled instead of blushing at the thought of meeting Zuko agian in "Return to Omahu". The again that explains why Mai might be trying keep Zuko away from the stress of The Avatar, but also possibly from Zuko going back for Katara, which I'm sure you Zutura fans want that.
