I pronounce it My-ko because Mai really should be pronounced May. I mean they should have spelled her name Mei to make it May but whatever. So yeah My-ko for me because May-ko doesn't right to me.

^I know what you mean about that being the way it should technically be pronounced, but they pronounce it "May" in the show, so i pronounce the ship "May-ko." But anyway, just thought i'd bump this thread up by posting a Maiko drawing i did a while back. I called it "Moonlit Maiko Angst." lol (It's set kind of during The Beach--which i personally loved--tho not really at a particular moment during that episode.) So here's the link.

I know we're not allowed to post spoilers and such, but if any of you Maiko fans are pondering whether or not to watch TBR.
Do. You will love it so much. It made me love this ship so much more, gah.

Congratulations Maiko shippers, on having an episode where the writing for your ship is actually good. I was pleasantly surprised.
If only the Maiko in the previous episodes was as good.

I always though Maiko was great but it definitely reached a whole new standard after TBR.

Guys, keep the spoilers to a minimum. We do have a board for spoiler discussion and I would like to see a bulk if not all spoilers kept there. k. Thanks.

^Thanks--I'm one of those trying not to be spoiled for TBR, so i'm glad the mods are staying on top of it. @femble91: Thank you! Glad you like it. It's shiny b/c i colored it using gel pens, which i'd gotten for Christmas. lol @ghiaccio: Wow, i love that Maiko sig! I wish i could draw Mai like that... Still working on it.

Chinese characters (along with Japanese Kanji) often times have different pronunciations and different meanings for any given character - sometimes several.
Not only that but i think M&B mentioned that Mai's name comes from Cantonese which is a dialect of Chinese (and much harder to learn) that is a little different.
So not only is Mai's name coming from a different dialect it's in a language that uses characters to express different meanings and sometimes that character has multiple pronunciations.
I was in the same boat for a long time, but i was reading it with Japanese in my head instead of Cantonese.

It's a hard habit to break, I would know xD I speak Mandarin and so whenever I see Mai it automatically is pronounced "My" in my head. Oftentimes I have to force myself to pronounce it as "May". It's easier for me to say her name but when I read it I pronounce it in my head incorrectly xD

I dunno how I started thinking 'May,' it just sort of happened I guess. Nowadays whenever I see it, the reverse effect is happening. I'm thinking 'may' when I should be thinking 'my' lol.
It kinda sucks. This is also happening with reading Middle English (Medieval English) with regular English. if you're not sure what I'm talking about, sometimes I see the word knight and pronounce it in Middle English - 'kaneekt'

It's hard for me to pronounce Mai as 'May'. I grew up in Japan and although English is my first language the Japanese pronounciation of names such as hers stuck.

I'll think of it this way: characters in the Avatar world don't speak English. The dialogue is just translated for our benefit. If Mai's name is pronounced "My" in their native language(s), it's pronounced "May" when translated into English. I speak English, so I can pronounce it "May."

But i think its still for the convenience of the English speaking viewers.. Which is i guess more than 95% lol.
