^^ I think even from the Avatar Returns there were hints that he wasnt really a bad guy. Like when he grabbed Gran Gran to use as an example of the Avatar's presumed age rather than to use her as a hostage.

^ I agree that looking back there were always a few hints that Zuko had some good inside him. However, I really thought he was a total bad guy until "The Storm". I see the hints more in hindsight after I learned his backstory. Its amazing to rewatch the episodes where is relentlessly hunting Aang knowing that they actually become friends.

I just thought of something: since the lightning Azula shot at Zuko went through Zuko's heart (well, some of it, anyway), would that mean he'd have heart problems when he;s older? I read a fanfic about that and a forum discussion. DID it go through his heart? The scar's actually on his abdomen, which would suggest it went through his stomach, as it should have. Perhaps, due to its Sozin Comet enhancement, it was just too much for him to redirect properly? The fact that his stance was off probably wasn't a good thing either...

I believe that his stance being off was the main reason for him not being able to redirect it properly. He was ready to redirect what was shot at him but trying to jump in front of it at the right time threw him off.

He was prepared for Azula to shoot lightning at him. He didn't expect her to attack Katara. I agree that he couldn't redirect it because his stance was off.
