I think we'll dive more into Aang's past eventually, especially as we get closer to him completing his bending training. I think, though, that his mother/father won't really factor into his past... Remember that Aang was brought up in a monkhood and it seems that it was an order where the children were brought up by the monks from infancy. I think of it as similar to the Jedi order (for any Star Wars geeks in the audience...) My guess is that as we learn more about Aang's past, it will be Gyatso (and to a lesser extent the other airbenders) that is his real family before he gets trapped in the iceberg. After that, Katara and Sokka become his family. That is why he was so devastated by the way Gyatso died. If we do get more flashbacks surrounding Aang, it will most likely be of his time in the Air temple and how he learned airbending from Gyatso, played with his friends, grew up surrounded by lots of people who cared about him. I think there's a lot of dramatic potential in the contrast between that life and the one he has now where he has a host of enemies and an awesome responsibility. The weight of the Avatar legacy seems (to me) contrary to Aang's nature; his most basic personality traits. Hear me out on this... The Avatar is a huge job that takes a long time to grasp and train for. Of all the Avatars we've heard of, Aang is the youngest by far. It's not a job that is meant for a child ("We were going to tell you when you were sixteen"). Aang is a free spirit at his core and the burden of Avatar is one he is struggling against. We've begun to see it already. "I don't understand" -Katara "No, you don’t. Every day more and more people die. I’m already a hundred years late. Defeating the Fire Lord is the only way to stop this war. I have to try it." -Aang Even his natural element seems to be contrary to the Avatar burden. Air, as Iroh said, is the element of freedom and peace but these are the very traits an Avatar can never fully enjoy. As long as the world needs him/her, how can the Avatar ever really be at peace or be free? These are the things that a look at Aang's past will focus on, IMO... I have a feeling we'll have an Aang "breakdown" before too long......if you ask me, it's overdue... *whew!*

(for any Star Wars geeks in the audience...) Present! and I agree on you on those terms, his break down is overdue. But I keep hoping that his parents should be shone!! I mean, obviously he was given to the monks and raised by them, right? But my question--as been since the first eppisode and still is this--:why?

Hmmmmmmmmmmm, good points, lieselle... (and may the Force be with you! Well, remember what we learned from the monks way back in "The Storm"... They knew he was the Avatar since he was very young (maybe about 3 or 4, if he remembers choosing the toys). My guess is that in the Avatar world, if your child is the Avatar, it's understood that he/she will be raised by the masters of whatever dominant element he/she is. Once the Avatar masters that element (in Aang's case, air) the Avatar then travels to each of the other nations to learn from the masters of that nation's element. In times of peace, of course, there is no problem for the Avatar to travel from nation to nation. Not so in times of war. Back to the point, though....must...resist....tangents.... Aang's parents, IMO, probably wanted to keep him as much as any parents would. They knew the role of the Avatar, however, and knew that their child's destiny was bigger than they could handle. They gave him up to the only people they knew that could guide him. I wonder, though, if Aang remembers his parents and remembers having to leave them. Could you imagine that flashback? Gyatso explaining to a tearful Aang that his parents didn't want to leave him, but that they had to? It would be better if Aang doesn't remember them... It would be interesting to find out if Aang's parents were benders, though, and if so, which elements?

Air obviously (and the force be with you also--it shall!!) haha, but I mean what about the other kids. We're they given to the monks cause the parents couldnt keep them--were they abandoned--where they orphans--what? And where there other villages for the air nation?
IMO yes, but they wer nomads so i guess they never really stayed to long in one place. Maybe thats why theres only temples.

I think they have to expand on that in the future.... Your comments beg the question, though....is bending entirely familial? Is it something passed down from generation to generation or something that you're born with randomly (or that you somehow obtain supernaturally?) I wonder because of the example we have in Katara and Sokka. Not only is Katara a waterbender and Sokka isn't, but Katara was the only waterbender in her entire tribe! On the other hand, Zuko and Azula's father is a firebender, but is his mother? We don't know. Maybe someday we'll find out. Then there's Toph. I don't think either of her parents are benders (but I don't think we found out either way). I think it would be really cool to learn exactly how bending is "obtained" and when/how someone learns they can bend. ("It's not magic, it's waterbending!")

Interesting thoughts on our favorite ADD Demi-god XD
Aang is an interesting character in my eyes, simply because he's twelve and he has the obility to take lives in a instant and destroy villages too. But he can saves lives at same power and walk through the walls of the living and in the realm of spirits. (The kid can astral project!)
Aang will go through some more tough changes, and will battle with himself and start pushing people away. Expecially Katara. IMO He'll get frustrated and angry alot too. Astroanna, You're right Aang is way past due for a break down.

Aang will have a breakdown I'm sure of it. Not just because of his Avatar duties but because of the contrast between the world he was raised in and the one he's in now. Aang was raised in a sheltered protected environment in what was probable a time of great peace and good relations between the nations. His life and world have changed so much it's only natural for Aang to withdraw and breakdown.

In your question about whether or not Aang's parents were airbenders, I believe that I heard about that somewhere... one thing that made the Air Nomads different from the other nations, was that all Air Nomads were benders. So they must have been if the info is correct. I'm pretty sure the source was true, because he/she added that he/she got the information from an Avatar book that was released a while ago.

I think that he will have a breakdown. It'll probaly be from a mixture of things: duties, doubt and low self-confidence, and other factors. It is only a matter of time. We know how Aang lets things build up before he acknowledes it, and this time it can't get away from it.
I've always wanted his parents to make an appearance. He has a good memory, and it would be awesome to have them known. Like when Aang first arrived at the temple, whether he was given up or taken away, I want to see him realize it at this young age that sometimes the ones he loves isn't always around, and see how this toddler deals with it. Interesting.
