Man, am I the only one who got chills when the Fire Sages came and said "We are honored to serve you, Avatar Roku . . ." because man, that scene was powerful.
I also loved the entire volcano scene, the first bit waking up in the middle of the night was awesome, as well as Sozin betraying Roku for World Domination.
But I think that it was actually Sozin who set up Ursa and Ozai, as I think he would have had enough respect for his old friend to allow his grandson to marry his granddaughter . . .

The dream sequence... the red dragon good; Roku's dragon red... Ursa and the royal family other than Zuko and Iroh keeping secrets... Azulan ordering Ozai to kill his firstborn son (apparently because of Iroh and Lu Ten, but still suspicious)... Roku not killing Zuko in the Fire Temple... those closest to the Fire Lord distrusting Zuko unreasonably for the reasons we were given before... the Air Nomad Zuko dream... Iroh's constant Avatar and balance speeches to Zuko, seemingly out of nowhere after helping his nephew hunt the Avatar... And Iroh's concentration on Zuko's redemption and seemingly unreasonable fear during season 2 over him... It all makes sense now! Actually this all makes me feel better. I personally don't believe in good and evil in this way, so this episode was hard for me...but I am looking forward to seeing what happens.

Wait. Hold up. new thought. Iroh is trying to force a destiny on Zuko. After begging him not to let Ozai force a destiny on him. Hypocritical much? Not really... Iroh was forced to tell Zuko his true identity. He only told Zuko why he was in turmoil and what he was capable of. He thought Zuko would choose the destiny as the Fire Nation's savior on his own, but CoD happened... That's probably another reason why he wouldn't look at Zuko in the Headband. And that tear. It must've hurt him to know that there was a good chance Zuko would refuse his own legacy (and that the truth would be hard for Zuko), but telling Zuko the truth was his last hope. Zuko did beg Iroh for guidence in the Headband, you know. Iroh was only doing the last thing he knew to do. Iroh was also pretty much doing the same thing the monks were doing to Aang, only the opposite way around. He avoided telling Zuko as long as he could about his connection with Roku until absolutely necessary, rather than rushing Zuko before he was ready.

Yea but when push came to shove Roku did his duty rather than go with his wife even at the cost of his life.

Holy cow! Talk about a head rush. Zuko is the great grandson of Fire Lord Sozin and Avatar Roku. Talk about conflicted, that's like being born during WWII and finding out your mother was a Nazi and your father was a Jew. Powerful episode. Very powerful, indeed. The whole 'We are proud to serve you, Avatar Roku' scene, that was well done. Telling him on his friend's and his own birthday and having everyone in the room bow to him, now that's drama.

I doubt it. Otherwise it would not have been a secret to Zuko. Also, the Avatar's family would've had the same like mind as the Avatar. They would have automatically been the enemies of the Fire Nation.
Besides, would Sozin really care for Roku's family after betraying him and leaving him to die? His best friend?

The dream sequence... the red dragon good; Roku's dragon red And I think Sozin's Dragon Blue (or is it black?) This episode was one of the greatest so far. I'll admit that the beginning was a bit rocky. Roku was all "hey Aang, come to teh island ok?" in his dream and Aang's like "sure whatevr Roku". They got to the point pretty dang fast. If you where to watch The Beach and tAatFL back to back it would seem pretty strange. But a few points I found interesting was the fact that Sozin was so close to Aang but couldn't find him. I liked that scene when the ship when he passed over Aang in the iceberg. I also thought it was great to learn about the role of the Avatar. Like the fact that even the fire lord has to bow to him, does this mean that the Avatar has more power than the fire lord or any of the other ruling classes? Also that he can't have any "earthly" attachments while he's training but afterward he's allowed to get married. ;D There where very few moments I found funny in the episode there was the part where Azula tells Zuko to make sure the painter gets his good side, the part where Aang looks like he's gonna fart (or poop) and of course the part at the end when Katara tells Sokka to just take her hand. Ha, and the part where Sozin starts pulling grass and putting it on Roku's face. For some reason that made me laugh really hard. When Sokka says that there are no bathrooms in the spirit world does that mean he can remember his time there? Because I could have sworn it was said he couldn't remember anything that happened to him in the spirit world... The WTH moment of the day for me was the part when Iroh told Zuko he was related to the Avatar. I literally leaped off the couch and yelled "HOLY CRAP!" didn't see that one coming. Oh and Sozin is an @$$hole for leaving Roku to die. I mean he was your best friend for god sake. That son of a biscuit eating bull dog...

I don't think aang "farted" I just think it was the background sound effect...take the sound away and what do you think aang was doing.

The dream sequence... the red dragon good; Roku's dragon red And I think Sozin's Dragon Blue (or is it black?) Exactly! The evil blue dragon and good red dragon: Sozin and Roku. Azula, who has sided wholeheartedly with Sozin, and Iroh, who has sided wholeheartedly with the Avatar.

Yea but when push came to shove Roku did his duty rather than go with his wife even at the cost of his life. Right. The guru was never saying the avatars can't love and be loved, they just can't place possessions or attachments such as family ahead of their responsibilities. I think I got that right. This episode was real! I spewed ginger ale all over my dad's new TV and my dad said what?! when Iroh said Zuko's grandfather was Roku. It makes sense now, cause I did always wonder why Roku burned up Zuko's chains along with Katara's Sokka's and Shyu's chains. Now I know why. Roku was so cute younger; he was a goofy sweet guy. Sound like anyone we know? You know at first I didn't see Sozin's intentions as all bad. I thought he wanted to share his prosperity with the world, not just dominate as it is interpreted by a the other fire lords. But when you leave someone, much less your best friend, to die with indifference, you're just a cold bastard.

sweetest part of the show! one thousand posts!!!! Congrats! And yeah, that part at the end was just as sad & beautiful as the rest of the show. I'll never be able to say enough how much I love Avatar. But, given that bittersweet ending. . . I'm even more worried for the immediate fate of Toph than ever.
