Yeah, it's an entire season worth of character development for the group in a single episode, and that character development is otherwise rather tangential to the rest of the episode. And I had a serious "Oh no you didn't!" towards the writers when I saw how that messenger hawk got sent off and what led up to it. It's really bad when I let myself cross the line between "I think you could have done that better" and "I could have done that better" but I did for that scene, big time. Actually, my family and I rather approved of the party being trashed. My only complaint about that was that Zuko didn't beat anybody up.

OK...we get it...Azula need to be show one emoton that 24/7 and that your not welling to give up on a character. plus plot is imporant 24/7 because that how our lives run on...plots and not filliers. There's a huge difference between showing one emotion and being OOC. I watched the episode again recently (I figured there HAD To be a reason so many people were defending it! ), and I was actually disappointed because I caught a MISSED opportunity for showing more of Azula without making her seem out of character. When she came to retrieve Zuko from the old family vacation home, she commented about how the place was depressing, but we never got anything more than that. In the next scene she was back to being the same old Azula. We can only guess as to why it was so depressing for her. Did she miss Ursa? Was it a reminder of how much more her mother had favored Zuko? Does she miss having her whole family together? Did something happen there that we don't know about? Was she simply depressed at seeing her brother so angsty? (Although, you'd think she'd be used tgo THAT by now. ) We never find out. It felt like a bit of a wasted opportunity to me. Maybe we'll see at a later date.

I really disliked it. They were all Out of Character. The Gaang Parts were okay, but overall it wasn't a very good episode to me.

I voted other.
The episode was decent in its execution, a bit too melodramatic at times, but still good.
That being said, I think that this is the perfect example of core dilution. There are only about 500 minutes in a season for story development. The creators decision to spend nearly ten of it developing what are in reality supporting characters instead of major characters is one of the reasons that I think many are finding season 3 of lesser quality then previous seasons. All of the time spent on the fire nation gang working out their feelings led to really only one element that is important to later stories, Zuko stating that even having his father's love does not make him happy. I just do not feel that it was time well spent.
So, the episode itself was average and I didn't hate it, but it was not a good usage of the little time available in the season.

I'm afraid I don't understand. Do you mean that people concluded that "The Great Divide" was silly because they simply assumed at the time of its airing that it didn't have anything to do with the story, or because they looked back after the season was over and saw that it had nothing to do with the story? Either way, I need some clarification on how this fits into your logic. Because in all honesty, "The Great Divide" was really pretty silly anyway you look at it (but silly in a good way, imo). I can accept that we shouldn't jump to conclusions about the relevency of "The Beach," but how does "The Great Divide" example illustrate this?

how could you be confuse if you understand what I'm saying. Just saying passing judgement right is may be alright but dosen't tell us much if what we see her will be usefull...chance are it might in episodes to come.

I dunno. It was a ok I guess. It was funny. But it reminded me too much of all of those The N shows I detest so much. All of these "normal" teen issues. There's nothing wrong with that. It's just- ....Other. I'll leave it at that.

Fuego, I understand your overall logic, but that is NOT what my post was about. I was asking how "The Great Divide" episode in particular fit into that logic. As far as I can see, "The Great Divide" has nothing to do with the question at hand; you're telling us not to assume that "The Beach" is silly, but you pulled out one of the show's silliest episodes as an example. Please explain your reasoning for doing that.

What...when the episode first aired...did people gave it the title that it has reseved as useless epiosde....Just state that don't be quick to judge for there still plenty of season to go and who know if this episode will be usefull...I know I do believe it served and will serve it purpose.

Wow contrary to what I had initially thought, it would seem people who liked/loved this episode are the majority. Though only by a little bit.
Thank you all for your opinions, I had a blast reading them all.
